The promise of “many rooms” in the “Father’s house” is typically interpreted as Jesus’ assurance that he will return to usher believers into “heaven.” However, John 14 has much more to say about how we live than what happens when we die. A closer look at John 14 in the broader context of the Gospel reveals that “the Father’s house” is not a designation for heaven, but a reference to God’s household of faith. In his going away and coming again, Jesus doesn’t transport his followers to “heaven,” but rather prepares the way into the presence of God by going to the cross. As Christ walks in cruciform obedience, he models a new way of walking with God, a new halakah based on intimate, relational faith. By following the halakah of Jesus, through the power of the Spirit-Paraclete, believers are equipped to carry out God’s will upon the earth and spread his redemptive mission throughout creation.

John Moxon shows how by the incorporation of such naturalistic motifs, Luke takes "revelation" in a new and decidedly psychological direction, probably imitating similar developments in Graeco-Roman biography. If the vision reveals an illegitimate transfer of disgust within an exaggerated halakha of separation, then its target is prejudice and inconsistency, not the Jew-Gentile divide as such, as underlined by the ironic contrast with the pious Cornelius. In this reading, Luke's non-supercessionism is maintained, whilst showing him acutely aware of the kinds of nightmare holding many back from the nascent Gentile mission.

But perhaps no other portion of the Old Testament is more misunderstood by readers today. For some, prophecy conjures up knotted enigmas, opaque oracles and terrifying visions of the future. For others it raises expectations of a plotted-out future to be reconstructed from disparate texts. And yet the prophets have imprinted the language of faith and imagination with some of its most sublime visions of the future - nations streaming to Zion, a lion lying with a lamb, and endlessly fruiting trees on the banks of a flowing river. We might view the prophets as stage directors for Israel's unfolding drama of redemption.
