Between 1786 and 1789 his two-vessel expedition traversed the Northwest Coast from Prince William Sound to Vancouver Island and wintered on the Hawaiian Islands. Along the way, he and his crew had some remarkable encounters with Native peoples of the Northwest Coast and the Hawaiian Islands: they were the first Europeans to encounter the Tsimshian and the southern Heiltsuk peoples as well as the first to land on the southern Queen Charlotte Islands. Colnett's journal of this expedition is published here for the first time. Editor Robert Galois provides extensive annotations, along with an introductory essay addressing the geopolitical context of the voyage and the intellectual background that shaped the writing of the journal. Galois supplements Colnett's writings with extracts from a second journal -- also previously unpublished -- by Andrew Bracey Taylor, third mate on one of the ships under Colnett's command. Also included are illustrations from Colnett's journals and a variety of maps, both contemporary and historical. This fascinating and informative account offers a new understanding of the early European presence in the Northwest and of Native responses to these developments. Broughton had first visited the North Pacific in 1792 in command of the brig Chatham during Vancouver's voyage. When negotiations between Vancouver and Juan Francisco Bodega y Quadra reached an impasse, Broughton was sent back to London to seek fresh instructions, travelling across Mexico and returning to Europe in Spanish ships. Back in London in July 1793 he was appointed in command of the sloop Providence with orders to rejoin Vancouver in the Pacific, taking with him the astronomer John Crosley.

He shows that Northwest Coast servitude, relatively neglected by researchers in the past, fits an appropriate cross-cultural definition of slavery. Arguing that slaves and slavery were central to these hunting-fishing-gathering societies, he points out how important slaves were to the Northwest Coast economies for their labor and for their value as major items of exchange. Slavery also played a major role in more famous and frequently analyzed Northwest Coast cultural forms such as the potlatch and the spectacular art style and ritual systems of elite groups. The book includes detailed chapters on who owned slaves and the relations between masters and slaves; how slaves were procured; transactions in slaves; the nature, use, and value of slave labor; and the role of slaves in rituals.
