Excerpt: ... these birds passed over the country and alighted for the night on a hill a few miles to the north of the city. Here they were attacked by all the available guns in the place. Some hundred or more were shot and many others taken alive, and amongst the number the one above referred to. At this interview with the Sardar, I urged the necessity of his assistance in relieving the miseries of the famine-struck townspeople, who were also being decimated by small-pox. He appeared to enter into my proposals with some earnestness, and promised that he would place an empty sarai within the citadel at my disposal, and CHAP. IV. INSPECTION OF AFGHAN TROOPS. 241 give me every assistance in his power. At the same time, he said he did not see the use of my giving myself so much trouble, as he was sure that my labours would not be appreciated. I was of a different opinion, however, and therefore pressed my suit with ultimate success, for after two or three weeks an empty and dilapidated sarai was placed at my disposal, but the Sardar's promises of encouragement and assistance were mere empty words. A couple of days after this interview with the Sardar, Major Lumsden and his Assistant inspected the heir-apparent's infantry troops, who were paraded for this purpose on the plain to the north of the city. They were pretty well got up, and went through a few simple evolutions with tolerable accuracy. Their marching, however, was very bad, and it was a pity to see such a fine body of men rendered useless by an aping of discipline not at all adapted to their military ideas or mode of fighting. On the parade-ground we met a number of chiefs attached to the court of the heir-apparent, and entered into conversation with several of them. They were mostly very fine...

Book excerpt: In this book, The Boundaries of Afghans’ Political Imagination, the author seeks an answer to the question of how tradition, specifically its normative-axiological aspects, shapes the political attitudes and actions of the Afghans. The author points to two different concepts of social order which are moulded by the Pashtunwali: on the one hand, a tribal code which is part of Pashto language tradition; and on the other hand, by Sufism, the religious and philosophical current in Islam expressed mainly in the Dari (Persian) language. The two systems offer a different hierarchy of values, and organize social reality by referring to two different models of order: the circle and the pyramid. While making an in-depth analysis of the topic, the author asserts that the social organization of the Pashtuns is based on the principle of representation and consensus. Tribalism is shaped in the structure of a circle, in which a group is the fundamental category. Where tribal structure no longer performs its regulatory and organizational functions, the pattern of social order is offered by the Sufi Brotherhoods, which had long been very popular and powerful in this part of Asia. The hierarchical organization of Sufism, based on a disciple-master relationship and the principle of authoritarianism, gradually established the structure of the pyramid as a model of social order, and also of political order. Religious Sufi Brotherhoods became the most accessible leadership pattern, besides the tribal one, to be fixed in the Afghans’ social imagination. This analysis from the perspective of sociocultural and political anthropology will be indispensable for those interested in Afghan and Islamic societies.

Book excerpt: Mountstuart Elphinstone (1779-1859), Lowland Scottish traveller, East India Company civil servant and educator, was one of the principal intellectual architects of British colonial rule in South Asia. Imbued with liberal views, such that Bombay's wealthy founded Elphinstone College in his memory, he pioneered the scholarly, scientific and administrative foundations of imperialism in India. Elphinstone's career was launched when he was picked to lead the inaugural British diplomatic mission to the Afghan court. His Account of the Kingdom of Caubul (1815) became the main source of British information about Afghanistan. He is best known for his periods as Resident at Poona and Governor of Bombay in the 1810s and 1820s, when he instituted innovative and lasting policies in administration and education while also conducting research for his extremely influential History of India (1841). This volume examines Mountstuart Elphinstone's intellectual contributions and administrative career in their own right, in relation to prominent contemporaries including Charles Metcalfe and William Moorcroft, and in the context of later historical study of India, Afghanistan, British imperialism and its imperial frontiers.
