Book excerpt: This story of Scattered, Smothered, and Yet Covered by the Grace of God tells the unknown, the unbelievable, and the hurt and heartache that scattered my life in 2010 with my son's dive into addiction. His addictions from pot to pills would scatter and smother me for the next eight-plus years. This isn't only a raw look into addiction and the destruction it causes, but more importantly, it is a look into a story of God's love, hope, mercy, and grace that covered me and my son during these years in addition to being covered by friendships and prayers when we couldn't cover ourselves. I learned in 2019–2020 while writing this story that there is an obvious thread woven within this story—that is, God was there in every detail along the way. I was scattered into pieces, broken beyond what I could have imagined, smothered to the point of true breathlessness, and yet covered by the grace of God each and every day. But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all surpassing power is from God and not from us. We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed. We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body. For we who are alive are always being given over to death for Jesus sake, so that his life may also be revealed in our mortal body. So then, death is at work in us, but life is at work in you. I am thankful, Lord, for the refining and redemption lived within this story. I have been covered by the grace of God!

Another case is diagnosed every sixty-five seconds.* If you consider those numbers to be staggering, consider these: • The population of Los Angeles is less than four million. • More than sixteen million family members and friends provide unpaid care for people with Alzheimer's disease or other dementia.** • The number of Alzheimer cases in the US is projected to grow to triple in the next thirty years.* This book may contain one caregiver's story, but it is also the story of the millions mentioned above. Teresa Trotter shares her emotional journey, along with practical advice and tips learned along the way. Helpful tools such as the "nuts and bolts" of successful retreats, a list of resources for enhancing retreats, and a retreat checklist are also provided. Dear Ellen, Thank you again for letting me use A River in the Desert as a guide for the young couples retreat that I facilitated. It saved my life! As you know, I had never conducted a retreat before and would have been totally lost without your excellent, step-by-step guide. I can't imagine tackling a retreat without it! I even followed the suggestions about using music (which was a little too touchy feely sounding but really worked.) If you are going to bake a retreat, you definitely need this recipe! ---Bob Fletcher, Roswell UMC To read the Retreat Overviews click here

Book excerpt: In Knitting, Praying, Forgiving: A Pattern of Love and Forgiveness, Cheryl shares her story of faith and her journey to forgiving the young man who murdered her mother .She provides a user-friendly pattern to experience love and forgiveness with the craft of knitting and an ancient monastic prayer practice: Lectio Divina. You may find encouragement in Cheryls story, and her pattern will help guide you to forgiveness one stitch at a time. A grace-filled book for knitters and contemplatives, Knitting, Praying, Forgiving is a practical and inspirational guide to the transforming power of knitting Gods love into shawls of forgiveness. Susan S. Izard, co-author of Knitting into the Mystery Cheryl Wunsch has an amazing story to tell, and she does so with great courage and compassion. Knitting, Praying, Forgiving lays out the path to a new life for anyone who has suffered at the hands of evil. I love this little book. Paula Huston, author of A Season of Mystery and Simplifying the Soul. Thoughtful and touching, Wunsch weaves together deep appreciation of a centuries-old prayer tradition with the needs of today. Her approach reminds me of the weaving of baskets prayerfully performed by the desert monks of long ago. Both spiritual and practical, this approach is another way to pray always. Brother Bede Healey, OSB Cam. Cheryl Wunsch weaves in her tender book Knitting, Praying, Forgiving a simple pattern of prayer, reflection, and craft (knitting) that abides as the heart of a loving and forgiving life. In the manner in which she knits her story, her prayer, and her practice together, Cheryl creates a radiant shawl of quiet that speaks powerfully as the fruit of faith and forgiveness.
