Soon after taking to the split-ring business, Mr. Mason added to it a new enterprise--that of steel pen making. At first the manufacture was conducted by him on a small scale, and was confined to the production of barrel pens; but after a little while it was extended, and by his connection with Mr. James Perry, the inventor of the Perryian pens, Mason became very largely engaged in the trade, and ultimately obtained the position of being the largest pen-maker in the world. It has been mentioned that his predecessor, Mr. Harrison, made steel pens for Dr. Priestley, as far back as the year 1780; but these were not in any sense articles of commerce. Early in the present century, however, barrel pens began to be made in Sheffield, in Staffordshire, and in Birmingham; and in 1828 Mason began to make them. Some time before this date--as early as 1825--Mr. James Perry had engaged in the pen trade in Manchester, and afterwards in London. He was thus in advance of Mitchell, or Gillott, or Mason; but his pens differed from theirs by not being entirely machine made. The blank was stamped, and was then filed into shape, and a mark for the slit was made while the STEEL PEN MAKING. 31 metal remained in a soft condition. After hardening, the pen was struck with a small hammer, and by thus cracking it at the place previously marked, the slit was formed. Pens thus made were, of course, much more costly than if they had been produced entirely by machinery. Mr. Perry not only made barrel pens, but also "slip" pens, for which goose quills were used as holders, but these were also slit in the manner above described. "Perry," Sir Josiah Mason says in a memorandum in the writer's possession, "was not the first maker of steel...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What explains the growth of a business, and more broadly the development or decline of a whole economy? What role does a particular entrepreneur or indeed a culture of entrepreneurship play? Does the evidence suggest that a particular structure or organizational form was or should be adopted to ensure best practice and commercial success? These fundamental questions have long preoccupied business and economic historians. With the current expansion of business and management education and training, the investigations and findings of the historian may have wider significance and relevance. This volume has been stimulated by the work of Peter Mathias, one of the leading figures in this field in the post-war period. Here a number of his former students--many now internationally distinguished historians--pay tribute in a book that explores the move from family firms to corporate capitalism. The contributors argue that sustained growth has never been a matter of a few spectacular technical breakthroughs, but instead rests on subtle economic and social transformations--in cultures, in economic organizations, and in the roles of science and technology.

Book excerpt: This title, first published in 1975, analyses the ways in which developments in Victorian universities have shaped both the structure and the assumptions of British higher education in the twentieth century. No period of British higher education has been more full of change nor so rooted in fundamental debate than the second half of the nineteenth century. Its lasting impact makes it crucial for an understanding both of this period of Victorian social history and of the contemporary system of higher education in Britain. This title will be of interest to students of history and education.

He was a member of parliament for almost 40 years and he was one of New Zealand political leaders known internationally. Keith Sinclair's engrossing biography traces Walter Nash's development from his youth through to his determination to build a more just society. Nash grappled with an array of practical problems such as finance, trade, war and international relations. Walter Nash is a riveting account of New Zealand politics and of a man whose enthusiasm, drive and personal quirks aroused admiration laced with exasperation in those who worked with him. This highly readable and important work was enjoyed by many as a New Zealand Listener serial.
