Download or read book Second Sight written by and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The human eye is only capable of detecting a miniscule percentage of the electromagnetic spectrum; we call this visible light. It is this limited perception that has defined our very reality as a species. Second Sight is the story of a brilliant young scientist who develops the nano-technology to cure blindness. He could never have prepared for the betrayal and intrigue that befell him, nor could he have foreseen the hidden agendas that lay waiting in the shadows. Michael Rose's synchronistic journey into the realms of possibility would not only leave him questioning his own sanity, but the very nature of existence itself. Neither he nor his nefarious benefactors stopped to ask: if this nano-technology could enhance the function of the human eye, what else would it see?

Download or read book Moral Dilemmas written by Daniel Statman and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 1995 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Moral dilemmas set a challenge for ethical theory. They are situations where agents seem to be under an obligation both to do, and to refrain from doing, a specific act. Are such situations possible? What is their exact nature? These are the questions that Moral Dilemmas tries to answer. The book argues that moral theories should not allow for the possibility of irresolvable dilemmas, for situations in which no right answer exists. To this end, arguments seeking to prove the existence of irresolvable dilemmas, especially the argument from the incommensurability of values, are discussed at length and refuted. The book shows that though on the normative level dilemmas are resolved, they typically involve a high moral cost for which there is no adequate compensation. This moral cost is the source of the regret and pain suffered by agents in moral dilemmas. Thus, moral dilemmas do not point to any inconsistency in our moral reasoning or theory, but to a problematic aspect of the human condition; at times (probably less often than is usually believed), human beings are justified, and even required, to dirty their hands by behaving in ways that in ordinary situations would be strictly forbidden and condemned.

Download or read book Complete Nonsense written by Mervyn Peake and published by Carcanet. This book was released on 2012-07-27 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Nonsense', wrote Mervyn Peake, 'can take you by the hand and lead you nowhere. It's magic.' Peake (1911-68) is one of the great English nonsense poets, in the tradition of Lewis Carroll and Edward Lear. His verses lead the reader into places where cause is cut free of effect and language takes on a giddy life of its own. Malicious bowler hats threaten their owners, a cake is chased across an ocean by a rakish knife, aunts become flatfish or live on sphagnum moss. Fully annotated, with a detailed introduction, Complete Nonsense contains all the poems and illustrations from Peake's Book of Nonsense (1972), with forty unpublished poems discovered in manuscripts and thirty from uncollected sources, including all the nonsense verses from his novels. It reprints complete - for the first time and in colour - the words and images from Rhymes without Reason (1944), and Peake's comic masterpiece Figures of Speech (1954). All the poems have been newly edited, often from Peake's manuscripts, by Robert Maslen, editor of Peake's Collected Poems (Carcanet), and Peter Winnington, the leading Peake scholar and biographer. Peake wrote of the rare art that glitters with the divine lunacy we call nonsense': Complete Nonsense glitters with Peake's benign and wayward imagination.
