It turns out the two young men have given up boxing in order to travel down the Trail of Death, the notorious cocaine trail that leads from northern Mexico into Texas. Alfredo decides to disguise himself as a poor migrant worker and travel down the Trail himself. But Alfredo gets more than he bargained for. At the end of the Trail, he meets a graying middle-aged alcoholic United States senator, Senator John Henry Longfellow from Texas--the last living witness to the conspirators as they planned the assassination of President John Fitzgerald Kennedy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Big, blond and a goal-scoring machine, Kerry Dixon delighted Chelsea and England fans during the 1980s. Yet his fall from grace, from the pinnacle of a playing career that had few equals, has been, by his own admission, spectacular. Kerry's life in recent years has been bedevilled with problems with gambling, drugs and, worst of all, a prison sentence in 2015 after he was convicted of grievous bodily harm following a fight in a pub. At that point, one of football's golden boys finally hit rock bottom. This book is the honest, unflinching account of his rise and fall, and of the new life he is now slowly and patiently building. His memories of playing in a more robust era of the game, before the days of multi-million-pound salaries and all the rest of the modern football circus, will appeal to plenty of nostalgic football fans, as well as to all those who remember him as one of the game's all-time greats. Equally, his unflinching recollections of his darkest days, culminating in his time in prison, are about as far from the Beautiful Game as anyone can imagine, and as fascinating as they are sometimes uncomfortable. In the end, however, his stunningly successful career at Chelsea has ensured that he remains loved by fans, despite his troubles. The world is all too familiar with tales of once-famous sportsmen and women falling from grace. Kerry Dixon's story, however, is unique at once for its flashes of humour in adversity, its clear-eyed reflections on a different age of football, when leading players could all too easily be treated as disposable, and for its humility. For Kerry Dixon, as this often moving autobiography shows, the only way is up. with a foreword by Frank Lamparrd and contributions from Harry Redknapp and Pat Nevin

This book was released on 2006-06-04 with total page 1057 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authoritative compendium of facts, statistics, photographs, and analysis that defines baseball in its formative first decades This comprehensive reference work covers the early years of major league baseball from the first game—May 4, 1871, a 2-0 victory for the Fort Wayne Kekiongas over the visiting Cleveland Forest City team—through the 1900 season. Baseball historian David Nemec presents complete team rosters and detailed player, manager, and umpire information, with a wealth of statistics to warm a fan’s heart. Sidebars cover a variety of topics, from oddities—the team that had the best record but finished second—to analyses of why Cleveland didn’t win any pennants in the 1890s. Additional benefits include dozens of rare illustrations and narrative accounts of each year’s pennant race. Nemec also carefully charts the rule changes from year to year as the game developed by fits and starts to formulate the modern rules. The result is an essential work of reference and at the same time a treasury of baseball history. This new edition adds much material unearthed since the first edition, fills gaps, and corrects errors, while presenting a number of new stories and fascinating details. David Nemec began the lifetime labor that helped produced this work in 1954 and admits it may never end, as there always will be some obscure player whose birth date has not yet been found. Until perfection is achieved, this work offers state-of-the-art accuracy and detail beyond that supplied by even modern baseball encyclopedias. As Casey Stengel, who was born during this era, was wont to say, “you could look it up.” Now you can.

Book excerpt: This book embraces some scientific methods, innovations, and advanced technologies, which were widely examined, on machine-buildings and ship-repair plants. The main objective of this book is to provide engineers, technical personnel, and managers with some problems, which have place in the process of the production of machines and mechanisms, and to find the ways of solving them. In basis of this task were put such questions as increasing quality production and decreasing its cost. In this book these topics have been organized into three chapters: CHAPTER I presents the most important problems of any engineering industry-this is the decreasing of waste products (such as cast iron bronze, graphite chip or dust, etc) to the environment; and also increasing the reliability of any mechanism and machine for the people in condition of their operation. The author recommends for this goal widely to use the pneumatic transportation and some new innovations. CHAPTER II discovers some advanced technologies in Manufacturing Engineering and shows the effectiveness of some machines and mechanisms. Here also is given big attention to the question of increasing quality production and productivity labor. CHAPTER III relates advantageously to Maritime Engineering and discovery of some progressive methods for the ship-repair plants and also for the ships which sail in condition of waves in the tropical seawaters. This book can be used also for the students or other practicing professional in business, industry, or government. This book includes about 86 illustrations, many innovations, and different advanced technologies. Anatoly I. Rozenblat Member of ASME, SNAME and SME Chicago, USA June, 2001

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On September 1, 1894 two forest fires converged on the town of Hinckley, Minnesota, trapping over 2,000 people. Daniel J. Brown recounts the events surrounding the fire in the first and only book on to chronicle the dramatic story that unfolded. Whereas Oregon's famous "Biscuit" fire in 2002 burned 350,000 acres in one week, the Hinckley fire did the same damage in five hours. The fire created its own weather, including hurricane-strength winds, bubbles of plasma-like glowing gas, and 200-foot-tall flames. In some instances, "fire whirls," or tornadoes of fire, danced out from the main body of the fire to knock down buildings and carry flaming debris into the sky. Temperatures reached 1,600 degrees Fahrenheit--the melting point of steel. As the fire surrounded the town, two railroads became the only means of escape. Two trains ran the gauntlet of fire. One train caught on fire from one end to the other. The heroic young African-American porter ran up and down the length of the train, reassuring the passengers even as the flames tore at their clothes. On the other train, the engineer refused to back his locomotive out of town until the last possible minute of escape. In all, more than 400 people died, leading to a revolution in forestry management practices and federal agencies that monitor and fight wildfires today. Author Daniel Brown has woven together numerous survivors' stories, historical sources, and interviews with forest fire experts in a gripping narrative that tells the fascinating story of one of North America's most devastating fires and how it changed the nation.
