Download or read book The Flight of A Stone Bird written by A D MOODLEY and published by Notion Press. This book was released on 2020-02-21 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Flight of A Stone Bird is about the triumph of the human spirit over the adversities that defined ‘indenture’ and its legacy. In the struggle to unshackle their bondage, men and women scratched out niches with bloodied hands to write a chapter of their existence, a shared destiny and a common destination. From the fragments of a common past and a mutual predicament, another bond emerged – the ‘brotherhood’. Emotional, enduring and powerful, devoid of the vestiges of caste or religion, this bond, which became as intimate as real blood kinship, was cherished by men well into their twilight years as a memory of a shared ordeal and of solidarity against the antagonism and adversities of a hostile new world. We shall forever remember those who built the steps we take.
Book Synopsis Last Outpost on the Zulu Frontiers by : Graham Dominy
Download or read book Last Outpost on the Zulu Frontiers written by Graham Dominy and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2016-04-15 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Small and isolated in the Colony of Natal, Fort Napier was long treated like a temporary outpost of the expanding British Empire. Yet British troops manned this South African garrison for over seventy years. Tasked with protecting colonists, the fort became even more significant as an influence on, and reference point for, settler society. Graham Dominy's Last Outpost on the Zulu Frontier reveals the unexamined but pivotal role of Fort Napier in the peacetime public dramas of the colony. Its triumphalist colonial-themed pageantry belied colonists's worries about their own vulnerability. As Dominy shows, the cultural, political, and economic methods used by the garrison compensated for this perceived weakness. Settler elites married their daughters to soldiers to create and preserve an English-speaking oligarchy. At the same time, garrison troops formed the backbone of a consumer market that allowed colonists to form banking and property interests that consolidated their control.

Book Synopsis Welcome to Greater Edendale by : Marc Epprecht
Download or read book Welcome to Greater Edendale written by Marc Epprecht and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2016-11-01 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the coming decades, the bulk of Africa's anticipated urban population growth will take place in smaller cities. Failure to manage environmental and public health problems in one such aspiring city, Edendale, has fostered severe pollution, seemingly intractable poverty, and gender inequalities that directly fuel one of the worst HIV/AIDS pandemics in the world. A nuanced and timely presentation of South African responses to changing times, conditions, opportunities, and state interventions, Welcome to Greater Edendale reconstructs nearly two centuries of contestation over land, governance, human rights, identity, housing, sanitation, public health, and the meaning of development. Bringing gender and health issues to the foreground, Marc Epprecht reveals many unexpected or forgotten triumphs against environmental injustice, but also unsettling continuities between colonial, apartheid, and post-apartheid policies to spur economic growth. Sheltered from the glare of national media and often overlooked by scholars, smaller cities like Edendale attract political patronage, corruption, and violent protests, while rapid climate change promises to further strain their infrastructure, social services, and public health. A challenging, innovative, and thoughtful examination of the history and politics of South Africa, Welcome to Greater Edendale questions the common assumptions embedded in environmental policy, gender relations, democracy, and the neoliberal model of development in which so many African cities are ensnared.

Book excerpt: This is a book about a Swedish baron who lived in Africa between 1912 and 1938 and who, after his coffee farm and marriage to the author Karen Blixen failed, became a white hunter, leading safaris for the international social elite in East Africa. He organized every detail of opulent safaris for the Prince of Wales, the Vanderbilts, and the wealthiest Americans and titled British between the wars. This contributed to the decimation of wildlife in East Africa in the face of the growing conservation movement. He was also a market hunter of ivory in Kenya, Tanganyika, and the Congo.

Book Synopsis From Boys to Gentlemen by : Robert Morrell
Download or read book From Boys to Gentlemen written by Robert Morrell and published by Unisa Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Awarded the Hiddingh-Currie Award for academic excellence. The book is the first on South African history to focus on the concept of masculinity; it examines how the forces of race and class were expressed in gendered ways from a century ago in South Africa. Its central concern is how white men established their dominance and constructed their masculinity, cataloguing and exploring the significance of the political and public dominance of white men. It argues that a particular type of settler masculinity was constructed and became dominant as a prescription for proper male behaviour; and shows how it excluded and silenced rival interpretations, and promoted the development of a closed and racially exclusive colonial society. The study concentrates on the white settler population around Pietermaritzburg, the capital of the then colony of Natal.
