This book was released on 1987 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study traces Borges' career as a poet from his earliest poetic endeavors before the 1923 publication of Fervor de Buenos Aires through the middle of the 1960's. Paul Cheselka considers Borges' better-known poetry collections, such as Fervor de Buenos Aires, Luna de enfrente, and Cuaderno San Martín; and he shows the often-neglected 1930-1960 period to be an important phase in the evolution of Borges' poetry. The poems are studied chronologically with particular emphasis on the relation of their themes to the poet's life and ideas. Cheselka's contribution is that of providing a clearer delineation of borgesian poetics; the poems themselves are shown to be the evidence and very substance of the poets's definitions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A dual-language volume of poems on darkness and light—many appearing in English for the first time—by one of the greatest writers of the twentieth century Revered for his magnificent works of fiction, Jorge Luis Borges thought of himself primarily as a poet. Poems of the Night is a moving collection of the great literary visionary's poetic meditations on nighttime, darkness, and the crepuscular world of visions and dreams, themes that speak implicitly to the blindness that overtook Borges late in life—and yet the poems here are drawn from the full span of Borges's career. Featuring such poems as "History of the Night" and "In Praise of Darkness" and more than fifty others in luminous translations by an array of distinguished translators—among them W. S. Merwin, Christopher Maurer, Alan Trueblood, and Alastair Reid—this volume brings to light many poems that have never appeared in English, presenting them en face with their Spanish originals.

Book excerpt: The complete sonnets of one of the greatest writers of the twentieth century—in English and Spanish This landmark collection brings together for the first time in any language all of the sonnets of one of the greatest writers of the twentieth century. More intimate and personally revealing than his fiction, and more classical in form than the inventive metafictions that are his hallmark, the sonnets reflect Borges in full maturity, paying homage to many of his literary and philosophical paragons—Cervantes, Milton, Whitman, Emerson, Joyce, Spinoza—while at the same time engaging the mysteries immanent in the quotidian. A distinguished team of translators—Edith Grossman, Willis Barnstone, John Updike, Mark Strand, Robert Fitzgerald, Alastair Reid, Charles Tomlinson, and Stephen Kessler—lend their gifts to these sonnets, many of which appear here in English for the first time, and all of which accompany their Spanish originals on facing pages.

Book Synopsis Borges on Writing by : Jorge Luis Borges
Download or read book Borges on Writing written by Jorge Luis Borges and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1971 Borges was invited to talk about his writing to students enrolled in the graduate writing program at Columbia University. This book is based on tape-recorded transcripts of these informal discussions between Borges, translator Norman Thomas di Giovanni, Frank MacShane, head of the creative writing department at Columbia, and the students. The three seminars deal with prose, poetry, and translation. In each Borges, in discussing his methods, refers to specific examples in his writing -- the use of local color and irony in his prose, autobiographical details in his poetry, testing and experiment in translation. The result is a rare and fruitful glimpse at how today's supreme verbal craftsman solves the age-old problems of the writer. -- From publisher's description.

Book Synopsis A Personal Anthology by : Jorge Luis Borges
Download or read book A Personal Anthology written by Jorge Luis Borges and published by Grove/Atlantic, Inc.. This book was released on 2015-05-12 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Handpicked works from the greatest Argentinian writer of the twentieth century. “Without Borges the modern Latin American novel simply would not exist” (Carlos Fuentes, author and diplomat). After almost a half a century of scrupulous devotion to his art, Jorge Luis Borges personally compiled this anthology of his work—short stories, essays, poems, and brief mordant “sketches,” which, in Borges’s hands, take on the dimensions of a genre unique in modern letters. In this anthology, the author has put together those pieces on which he would like his reputation to rest; they are not arranged chronologically, but with an eye to their “sympathies and differences.” A Personal Anthology, therefore, is not merely a collection, but a new composition. “An important work, by far the best yet available to the reader . . . who seeks a representative sampling of the great Argentine writer . . . the standard introduction to Borges in England and the United States.” —Saturday Review
