Book excerpt: Excerpt from Domestic Science: A Book for Use in Schools and for General Reading The author has endeavored to bring together, in a simple manner, such topics as have a direct bearing upon the science of domestic operations. His object has been to direct attention to daily household affairs, - affairs indeed, which to many are too common to be deemed worthy of earnest thought. The kitchen and the pantry may be made a laboratory for the elucidation of many important facts of science; and as interest is aroused in the necessary labors of the household, much of the unwelcome air of drudgery will vanish from such work. As it is plain that the duration of our mortal existence permits the exploration of but a small fraction of the domain of knowledge, careful judgment should be exercised in the selection of subjects of study; the practical and utilitarian aspect of modern systems of education testifies to the wide recognition this fact has received among the people in general. In this book, no effort has been made to secure an unduly elaborate or an exhaustive treatment; a large work would be poorly adapted for class use, and much detail might discourage the general reader in his study. Liberal reference has been made to the works of recognized authorities on the subjects treated; in such cases, acknowledgment has been made in the body of the work. A few passages are reprints of articles that have appeared over the author's signature in local periodicals. The liquid candle grease will return to solid form when cooled; dissolved salt may be recovered by evaporating the water; steam may be collected and condensed into form of water again. These are called physical changes. That part oi' the melted candle which was burnt will not return to its original form. Burnt sugar will never be sweet and white again. The ashes can not be changed into wood. These changes are changes in the composition of matter, and are called chemical changes. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Public School Domestic Science N eminent authority says: Up to the age of sixteen even a lucid statement of principles is received by all but a few pupils as dogma. They do not and cannot in any adequate sense realize the reasoning process by which scientific conclusions are reached. They are taught not only facts but classifications and laws, and causes in relation to their effect. These are not, in the majority of cases, elaborated by the pupil. The teaching of them accordingly degenerates into a statement of facts, and the learning of them into an act of memory. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A series of conversations about science in graphic form, on subjects that range from the science of cooking to the multiverse. Physicist Clifford Johnson thinks that we should have more conversations about science. Science should be on our daily conversation menu, along with topics like politics, books, sports, or the latest prestige cable drama. Conversations about science, he tells us, shouldn't be left to the experts. In The Dialogues, Johnson invites us to eavesdrop on a series of nine conversations, in graphic-novel form—written and drawn by Johnson—about “the nature of the universe.” The conversations take place all over the world, in museums, on trains, in restaurants, in what may or may not be Freud's favorite coffeehouse. The conversationalists are men, women, children, experts, and amateur science buffs. The topics of their conversations range from the science of cooking to the multiverse and string theory. The graphic form is especially suited for physics; one drawing can show what it would take many words to explain. In the first conversation, a couple meets at a costume party; they speculate about a scientist with superhero powers who doesn't use them to fight crime but to do more science, and they discuss what it means to have a “beautiful equation” in science. Their conversation spills into another chapter (“Hold on, you haven't told me about light yet”), and in a third chapter they exchange phone numbers. Another couple meets on a train and discusses immortality, time, black holes, and religion. A brother and sister experiment with a grain of rice. Two women sit in a sunny courtyard and discuss the multiverse, quantum gravity, and the anthropic principle. After reading these conversations, we are ready to start our own.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Science of Common Life The value of an introduction to the scientific method in the School training of both sexes is now fully recognised. There is still some difference of opinion, however, as to how girls can best be taught to appreciate the value of experiment and deduction in the endeavour to understand the forces of Nature. Fortunately, we believe, the idea gains ground that there are no more suitable means than the ordinary operations and practices of the household to illustrate physical and chemical laws. Adopting the general trend of the recent syllabus of the Board of Education, though in no sense slavishly following its details, we have attempted to make students familiar with those broad principles of science without which the intelligent guidance of the domestic economy is impossible. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Meaning of the Body, Mark Johnson continues his pioneering work on the exciting connections between cognitive science, language, and meaning first begun in the classic Metaphors We Live By. Johnson uses recent research into infant psychology to show how the body generates meaning even before self-consciousness has fully developed. From there he turns to cognitive neuroscience to further explore the bodily origins of meaning, thought, and language and examines the many dimensions of meaning—including images, qualities, emotions, and metaphors—that are all rooted in the body’s physical encounters with the world. Drawing on the psychology of art and pragmatist philosophy, Johnson argues that all of these aspects of meaning-making are fundamentally aesthetic. He concludes that the arts are the culmination of human attempts to find meaning and that studying the aesthetic dimensions of our experience is crucial to unlocking meaning's bodily sources. Throughout, Johnson puts forth a bold new conception of the mind rooted in the understanding that philosophy will matter to nonphilosophers only if it is built on a visceral connection to the world. “Mark Johnson demonstrates that the aesthetic and emotional aspects of meaning are fundamental—central to conceptual meaning and reason, and that the arts show meaning-making in its fullest realization. If you were raised with the idea that art and emotion were external to ideas and reason, you must read this book. It grounds philosophy in our most visceral experience.”—George Lakoff, author of Moral Politics

Fish-glue (see glue) is also much used on labels, and di u'te solutions of this material are widely sold as muci lage, and are, except for the characteristic and disagreeable odor and taste, a satisfactory substitute for the gum-arabic mucilage. Book excerpt: Are there really laws governing the universe? Or is the order we see a mere artifact of the way evolution wired the brain? And is what we call science only a set of myths in which quarks, DNA, and information fill the role once occupied by gods? These questions lie at the heart of George Johnson's audacious exploration of the border between science and religion, cosmic accident and timeless law. Northern New Mexico is home both to the most provocative new enterprises in quantum physics, information science, and the evolution of complexity and to the cosmologies of the Tewa Indians and the Catholic Penitentes. As it draws the reader into this landscape, juxtaposing the systems of belief that have taken root there, Fire in the Mind into a gripping intellectual adventure story that compels us to ask where science ends and religion begins. "A must for all those seriously interested in the key ideas at the frontier of scientific discourse."--Paul Davies
