Book excerpt: More than a century and a half prior to Luther's historic act at Wittenberg, the University of Oxford's distinguished scholar John Wycliff was engaged in his own full-scale war on the institutions and practices of medieval Christendom. This vitriolic theologian from Yorkshire blasted the Pope as anti-Christian and a devil . . . the father of lies; the cardinals were full of foul pride, the Caesarean secular clergy were traitors of God and his people, the monks were in love with their own belly, and the friars were hypocrites guilty of stinking covetousness. Although defenders of the Church struck back with devil's instrument, heretics' idol, flatteries' sink, admirers subsequently hailed him as the Morning Star of the Reformation. The result of so much passion on both sides has been that even today a balanced view of Wycliff is difficult to obtain. This book is one of the first attempts to steer between the extremes, to find the real man and the place he occupied in the movement toward Reform. Actually, a full and comprehensive account of Wyclif's character is almost impossible to achieve. His own writings reveal virtually nothing of a personal nature; his face cannot be studied because no authentic portrait survives. Weighing the evidence of all the widely varying partisan biographies, Mr. Stacey does construct a reliable, if incomplete, impression of Wyclif based on certain characteristics that no assessment can reasonably reject. Painting the great Bible translator into the total picture of Reform is the more fruitful task to which the author devotes the major part of this book. He discusses the validity of Wyclif's judgments of the Church, the increasingly nationalistic climate that encouraged him, his belief in the supreme authority of Scripture and insistence on its literal meaning, his theology, and the perpetuation of his thought in the doctrines and practices of the Lollards. Mr. Stacey appraises both the success and failure of Wyclif's activity, concluding that theologically and practically his contribution revolved around the precise issues that concerned the sixteenth-century Reformers. He was on the scent and going strong even if he was not to be in at the kill. Here, for all readers, is a significant new study developed with an objectivity rarely accorded one of the most baffling and controversial personalities in history.

Book excerpt: In a generation when Western Christendom was convulsed by crisis in its religious leadership and its kingdoms were divided in political rivalries, John Wycliffe stood out with his torrid denunciation of abuses in the Christian Church. More works have been written about him than any other medieval Englishman, and yet to explain what he sought to do or achieved paradoxically remains difficult. The greater part of his life was spent in a university career and academic disputation, and very little is known of the details of this period before he emerged into public affairs. For the last dozen years or so before his death, he became entangled in English ecclesiastical and secular politics, and in this career eventually gave his attention more exclusively to demands for the reform of doctrines and abuses. --from chapter 2

He attended Oxford University, receiving his doctorate in 1372. Most of his life was spent teaching at Oxford, and studying God’s Word in Oxford’s extensive library. He was a brilliant scholar who mastered the late medieval scholastic tradition, and was recognized by John of Guant (The Duke of Lancaster) as one who was extraordinarily gifted in theology and preaching. Not only was he an able clergyman, but he was also involved in state affairs. Wickliffe performed diplomatic duties for the crown, and wrote extensively on supporting civil government. This is one of the few biographies that exist on the life of Wickliffe.

Book excerpt: John Wycliffe, the Morning Star of the Reformation, gave us the first English translation of the Bible. A noted scholar and teacher at Oxford, his reliance on the Bible as the sole source of truth stood in stark contrast to the teachings of the Catholic church. His followers went out, teaching and preaching to the common man throughout England. Bowing himself to the authority of the Bible, his great aim was to bring men to the Word. He saw it as the one great authority, the Law that exceeded all other laws. His life’s work continued through men like John Hus and laid the groundwork for Martin Luther, John Calvin, John Knox and the other great men of the Reformation.
