Download or read book Uncas written by Michael Leroy Oberg and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many know the name Uncas only from James Fenimore Cooper's The Last of the Mohicans, but the historical Uncas flourished as an important leader of the Mohegan people in seventeenth-century Connecticut. In Uncas: First of the Mohegans, Michael Leroy Oberg integrates the life story of an important Native American sachem into the broader story of European settlement in America. The arrival of the English in Connecticut in the 1630s upset the established balance among the region's native groups and brought rapid economic and social change. Oberg argues that Uncas's methodical and sustained strategies for adapting to these changes made him the most influential Native American leader in colonial New England. Emerging from the damage wrought by epidemic disease and English violence, Uncas transformed the Mohegans from a small community along the banks of the Thames River in Connecticut into a regional power in southern New England. Uncas learned quickly how to negotiate between cultures in the conflicts that developed as natives and newcomers, Indians and English, maneuvered for access to and control of frontier resources. With English assistance, Uncas survived numerous assaults and plots hatched by his native rivals. Unique among Indian leaders in early America, Uncas maintained his power over large numbers of tributary and other native communities in the region, lived a long life, and died a peaceful death (without converting to Christianity) in his people's traditional homeland. Oberg finds that although the colonists considered Uncas "a friend to the English," he was first and foremost an assertive guardian of Mohegan interests.

Book Synopsis An Evangelical on the Left by : Anna Waldherr
Download or read book An Evangelical on the Left written by Anna Waldherr and published by Tate Publishing. This book was released on 2007 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Evangelical on the Left examines the place of faith in the public forum, focusing on the alliance between President George W. Bush and the political movement known as the Christian Right. Author Anna Waldherr is sharply critical of Bush Administration policies and ethics, making the case that Christian religious beliefs and Neo-Conservative political policy are fundamentally at odds. While biblical in outlook, An Evangelical on the Left addresses a variety of controversial topics with a fresh eye. These include abortion, poverty, homosexuality, racism, and the war in Iraq. Waldherr draws on historical references, legal precedents, economic analysis, and social commentary to make sense of the complex times in which we live. Seeking to bridge the divide between Left and Right, An Evangelical on the Left calls for tolerance and brotherhood. The book is uncompromising in relaying the Gospel message of love and forgiveness.

Book Synopsis The Notorious Elizabeth Tuttle by : Ava Chamberlain
Download or read book The Notorious Elizabeth Tuttle written by Ava Chamberlain and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2012-10-31 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who was Elizabeth Tuttle? In most histories, she is a footnote, a blip. At best, she is a minor villain in the story of Jonathan Edwards, perhaps the greatest American theologian of the colonial era. Many historians consider Jonathan Edwards a theological genius, wildly ahead of his time, a Puritan hero. Elizabeth Tuttle was Edwards’s “crazy grandmother,” the one whose madness and adultery drove his despairing grandfather to divorce. In this compelling and meticulously researched work of micro-history, Ava Chamberlain unearths a fuller history of Elizabeth Tuttle. It is a violent and tragic story in which anxious patriarchs struggle to govern their households, unruly women disobey their husbands, mental illness tears families apart, and loved ones die sudden deaths. Through the lens of Elizabeth Tuttle, Chamberlain re-examines the common narrative of Jonathan Edwards’s ancestry, giving his long-ignored paternal grandmother a voice. Tracing this story into the 19th century, she creates a new way of looking at both ordinary families of colonial New England and how Jonathan Edwards’s family has been remembered by his descendants, contemporary historians, and, significantly, eugenicists. For as Chamberlain uncovers, it was during the eugenics movement, which employed the Edwards family as an ideal, that the crazy grandmother story took shape. The Notorious Elizabeth Tuttle not only brings to light the tragic story of an ordinary woman living in early New England, it also explores the deeper tension between the ideal of Puritan family life and its messy reality, complicating the way America has thought about its Puritan past.
