Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A highly important figure in the late eighteenth-century British art world, John Raphael Smith was the most robust and prolific printmaker of his time. Smith not only produced nearly 400 prints - about 130 of his own design and the others by such noted British artists as Joshua Reynolds, George Romney, and Joseph Wright of Derby - he was also appointed 'Mezzotinto Engraver' to the Prince of Wales and became an impresario of the print-publishing trade. This book is the first full-length study for nearly a hundred years of Smith’s remarkable career in printmaking. Ellen D’Oench investigates how Smith conducted his engraving and publishing business and what his prints, drawings, and paintings reveal about the culture and morality of the society that viewed them. She includes a chronological catalogue raisonné with newly discovered works, an inventory of his firm’s publications, and a catalogue of prints reproduced from his own original work. Along with full biographical information on Smith and his activities as an artist and publisher, D’Oench pays close attention to the contemporary art market, its operation, and the placement of Smith’s products within it. She details Smith’s fascination with female genre subjects and his use of printed images to both exploit and critique his culture’s manners and morals. Historians of paintings and prints, social and cultural historians, and scholars of women’s history will all find in this book an array of delightful illustrations and interesting material.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from John Raphael Smith: His Life and Works Mr. Theobald, to whom I was a complete stranger, has, in the same generous manner, opened his portfolios to my mezzotint artists, lending his priceless proofs without any other security for their safeguarding than his know ledge of our mutual interest in their preservation. Sir Charles Tennant has positively dismantled the walls of his staircase at 40 Grosvenor Square, in order that the readers of the Life of yalm Raphael Smith should be able to gaze at the rarest works of the artist, so far, at least, as I could have them reproduced. This book was released on 2019-12-04 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book considers the relationships between British Romantic-era novelist, poet and writer of educational works for children, Charlotte Smith (1749-1806), and a number of visual artists of the eighteenth century with whom she had connections. By exploring these associations with artists such as George Smith of Chichester, George Romney, James Northcote, John Raphael Smith and Emma Smith, the book demonstrates how the artwork of these individual artists influenced Charlotte Smith’s literary corpus. It also shows a mutual influence: how the literary works of Charlotte Smith impacted the corpora of these artists. This study uncovers information which was not heretofore known regarding these artists: it reveals a mistaken attribution of a sketch which accompanied the second volume of Smith’s Elegiac Sonnets (1797) and sheds light on a print, held by the British Museum, which was previously shrouded in mystery. The artworks also enhance the existing scholarly knowledge about Smith’s biography. This book analyses the tropes and motifs employed by Smith’s artist-associates in the context of the popular aesthetics of the period and undertakes parallel readings between such visual artistry and Smith’s literary works. The book deliberates on how Smith utilises these aesthetics as narrative devices, making use of the tropes of the picturesque, the sublime and the beautiful, as well as that of a national British heraldic artwork, in order to produce and enhance meaning in her literary oeuvre. Thus, Smith uses aesthetic structures as vehicles for social critique, commentating on political, gender, moral and class concerns in addition to enhancing the perceived authenticity of her own artistry. The scholarship aims to correct the common misperception that Smith was a lonely marginal figure of Romanticism and instead asserts her central position in an enormous network of key artistic figures of British Romanticism.

Book excerpt: Raphael Hefti (b. 1978, lives and works in London and Zurich) has a singular approach to experimentation with materials: fascinated with processes and often inventing his own, he blurs boundaries between natural and industrial, abstract, and representational. He frequently collaborates with technicians and scientists to reveal unexpected beauty in ordinary materials, referring to processes that otherwise remain invisible but which form the crucial substructure of contemporary culture.Recent solo exhibitions by Hefti include CAPC Bordeaux (2013), White Cube Gallery, London (2013) and Camden Arts Centre, London (2012). He was also included in the group exhibitions "Flex-Sil Reloaded" at the Kunsthalle St. Gallen (2013), "How to Work (More For) Less" at the Kunsthalle Basel (2011), "Minimal Myth" Museum Boijmans in Rotterdam (2012), and in 2012 he won the Swiss Art Award national prize. The book includes an essay by Alex Farquharson, a conversation with Adam Szymczyk, and an essay by Harry Burke.Published in the HAPAX series with Nottingham Contemporary.
