Book excerpt: One of the most eccentric and accomplished politicians in all of American history, John Randolph (1773–1833) led a life marked by controversy. The long-serving Virginia congressman and architect of southern conservatism grabbed headlines with his prescient comments, public brawls, and clashes with every president from John Adams to Andrew Jackson. The first biography of Randolph in nearly a century, John Randolph of Roanoke provides a full account of the powerful Virginia planter's hard-charging life and his impact on the formation of conservative politics. The Randolph lineage loomed large in early America, and Randolph of Roanoke emerged as one of the most visible—and certainly the most bombastic—among his clan. A colorful orator with aristocratic manners, he entertained the House of Representatives (and newspaper readers across the country) with three-hour-long speeches on subjects of political import, drawing from classical references for his analogies, and famously pausing to gain "courage" from a tumbler at his side. Adept at satire and uncensored in his verbal attacks against colleagues, he invited challenges to duel from those he offended; in 1826, he and the then-secretary of state Henry Clay exchanged gunfire on the banks of the Potomac. A small-government Jeffersonian in political tastes, Randolph first entered Congress in 1799. As chairman of the powerful Ways and Means Committee he memorably turned on President Jefferson, once and for all, in 1805, believing his fellow Virginian to have compromised his republican values. As a result, Randolph led the "Old Republicans," a faction that sought to restrict the role of the federal government. In this rich biography, David Johnson draws upon an impressive array of primary sources—Randolph's letters, speeches, and writings—previously unavailable to scholars. John Randolph of Roanoke tells the story of a young nation and the unique philosophy of a southern lawmaker who defended America's agrarian tradition and reveled in his own controversy.

Book excerpt: In a very vivid dream during the night of January 1, 1998, John Randolph Price was emphatically denied access to the secret gate leading to Cosmic Consciousness. Both curious and concerned, he pondered what to do next. Then he was suddenly given the specific instruction: see Jesus for the Code. John began the task immediately upon awakening, first with quiet prayer to become attuned to the 'mind which was in Christ Jesus', followed by several days of meditative inner plane work. There was little progress until he took a break from the project and went for a long walk in the woods. And it was there that he heard the central message of the Code - a challenge for all of us to embrace a new Model of Reality, and change our perspective on what it means to be 'spiritual' in this world.

Concerns about memory and other thinking skills are common, particularly in middle age and beyond. Due to worries about declining brain health, some seek out dubious products or supplements purportedly designed to improve memory and other cognitive abilities. Fortunately, scientific research has uncovered a clear- cut set of evidence- based activities and lifestyle choices that are inexpensive or free and known to promote brain and cognitive functioning. Dr. John Randolph translates this science in an engaging and accessible way, including the brain- boosting effects of exercise, social activity, mental stimulation, task management strategies, nutrition, and positive self-care. Interwoven with lessons from neuroscience, positive psychology, social and clinical psychology, and habit formation research are powerful self- coaching exercises designed to help the reader incorporate lifestyle changes that promote brain health.

Book excerpt: The natural expression of the angels is Truth. If we deny the truth, we repress the energy of the angels. But when we fully accept the eternal verities of life, the angels go to work to bring everything up to the divine standard.... Within each one of us dwell the twenty-two angels, centers of Living Energy that provide us with all we need to sustain us on our journey through life. They await only our readiness. However, the angels require our assistance to manifest changes in our lives. They are able to free us from disease and death, loneliness and unfulfillment, lack and limitation only when we free them. And so the author of the bestselling The Angels Within Us has written this book to help us set free the positive vibrations of these inner archetypes and their "nothing-is-impossible" energy. Through meditations, affirmations, exercises, dialogues with the twenty-two angels, and true stories of the miracles and transformations wrought by them, he helps us liberate the power of the Divine within so that we can: * Awaken our higher consciousness * Heal the past * Communicate with angels awake and dreaming * Find our right livelihood * Enjoy prosperity * Open ourselves to physical healing * Find fulfillment in our relationships * Surrender to unconditional love * And much more Our angels are the very law of our being. This remarkable book helps us to connect and flow with their universal rhythm of wholeness, to become who and what we really are.

Book excerpt: Since its rapid imperial expansion in the seventeenth century, Russia's politics, society, and culture have exerted a profound influence on movement throughout Eurasia. The circulation of people, information, and things across Russian space transformed populations, restructured collective and individual identities, and created enduring legacies. This volume represents the latest discoveries of scholars attempting to rediscover this experience, and to understand its lasting meaning for today. These gathered essays tell a broad range of stories, involving a remarkable cross-section of historical actors: imperial visionaries, stage-coach entrepreneurs, religious pilgrims, tourists, disability activists and metropolitan police, among others. The book illuminates three major themes: the role of human mobility in Russian governance; the processes by which people decide where and how to move; and the political and cultural power of different kinds of movement. A strong contribution to our understanding of the history of Russia and the Soviet Union, this volume offers new models of research for historians, sociologists, political scientists, and others who are seeking to integrate the study of human mobility into their work. Contributors are Eugene M. Avrutin, Alexandra Bekasova, Faith Hillis, Gijs Kessler, Diane P. Koenker, Chia Yin Hsu, Eileen Kane, Anne Lounsbery, Matthew Light, Sarah D. Phillips, John Randolph, Anatolyi Remnev, Jeff Sahadeo, Frithjof Benjamin Schenk, Charles Steinwedel, Willard Sunderland, and Elena Tyuryukanova.
