Book excerpt: At first glance, Johannes Kahrs' dramatic paintings and drawings seem to carry forward the clear, everyday truths of snapshots; on closer inspection they become intricate, mysterious, fictional worlds. Kahrs manipulates found imagery from film stills, newspapers and personal photographs and liberates figures from their original contexts into dark, uncanny atmospheres. Through an intense pursuit of detail, he works to transplant into the viewer his own initial fascination with the image for its own sake. On top of all this methodology and maneuvering, he distances the viewer from the works by presenting them behind glass, so that their glazed surfaces throw back light and reflection. Kahrs, born in Bremen in 1961 and currently based in Berlin, has shown widely in Europe, at the Drawing Center and P.S.1 in New York, the Phoenix Art Museum and Miami's Bass Museum of Art.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Austerity became the predominant fiscal policy response to the Great Recession in Europe. After a brief period of 'emergency Keynesianism' from 2008 to 2010, even the centre-left abandoned plans for deficit spending and accepted austerity as the dogma of the day. In this book, Björn Bremer explains how this came about and explores its political consequences, combining qualitative and quantitative methods and drawing on a wide range of empirical evidence to study both the demand- and supply-side of politics. Based on this evidence, the book argues that a complex interaction of electoral and ideational pressures pushed social democratic parties towards orthodox fiscal policies. As government debt became a taboo following the Greek sovereign debt crisis, social democratic parties endorsed austerity to increase their perceived economic competence and fiscal credibility. This decision was legitimized by economic ideas inspired by supply-side economics, which had become popular among social democrats at the end of the twentieth century. Although the book shows that social democratic austerity was not inevitable, powerful feedback effects of the Third Way thus trapped and divided the centre-left during the crisis. This undermined the ability of social democratic parties to oppose austerity and eventually contributed to their electoral crisis in the shadow of the Great Recession.

Evans examines postwar and contemporary German history to broadly argue for a practice of queer history that moves beyond bounded concepts and narratives of identity. Drawing on Black feminism, queer of color critique, and trans studies, Evans points out that although many rights for LGBTQI people have been gained in Germany, those rights have not been enjoyed equally. There remain fundamental struggles around whose bodies, behaviors, and communities belong. Evans uses kinship as an analytic category to identify the fraught and productive ways that Germans have confronted race, gender nonconformity, and sexuality in social movements, art, and everyday life. Evans shows how kinship illuminates the work of solidarity and intersectional organizing across difference and offers an openness to forms of contemporary and historical queerness that may escape the archive’s confines. Through forms of kinship, queer and trans people test out new possibilities for citizenship, love, and public and family life in postwar Germany in ways that question claims about liberal democracy, the social contract, and the place of identity in rights-based discourses.

Where can we find the fixed points, the safe spaces of our lives? This book deals with these and other questions. The authors found inspiration for the book in Umberto Eco. And so it is also a homage to Eco.
