Book excerpt: Samuel was born illegitimate in Mehlis, Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, Germany in 1815 to a mother from a family of gunsmiths extending back to the 16th century. It was a time of increasing inflation, joblessnes and famine. Even after his mother married before his 10th birthday, Samuel's lot in life did not improve much. Like his family before him, he learned the gunsmithing and engraving trade before setting out on his journeyman travels that extended all the way to St. Petersburg. On returning home he married, had children and like others, struggled to get by. His town of Zella was so poor the town council made the decision to "forcibly" emigrate some of the poorer citizens to America in order to relieve the strain on the town budget. Samuel jumped at the chance to leave Germany with his family at the state's expense. The family arrived in Baltimore December 23, 1854 eventually moving to Hartford, Connecticut where Samuel worked for the Colt Armory before his untimely death at age 48.

Book Synopsis Philosophy of Biology Before Biology by : Cécilia Bognon-Küss
Download or read book Philosophy of Biology Before Biology written by Cécilia Bognon-Küss and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-02-11 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of the term "biology" to refer to a unified science of life emerged around 1800 (most prominently by scientists such as Lamarck and Treviranus, although scholarship has indicated its usage at least 30-40 years earlier). The interplay between philosophy and natural science has also accompanied the constitution of biology as a science. Philosophy of Biology Before Biology examines biological and protobiological writings from the mid-eighteenth century to the early nineteenth century (from Buffon to Cuvier; Kant to Oken; and Kielmeyer) with two major sets of questions in mind: What were the distinctive conceptual features of the move toward biology as a science? What were the relations and differences between the "philosophical" focus on the nature of living entities, and the "scientific" focus? This insightful volume produces a fresh but also systematic perspective both on the history of biology as a science and on the early versions of, in the 1960s in a post-positivist context, the philosophy of biology. It will appeal to students and researchers interested in fields such as history of science, philosophy of science and biology.

Download or read book Somersett: Or Why and How Benjamin Franklin Orchestrated the American Revolution written by Phillip Goodrich and published by Phillip Goodrich. This book was released on 2020-06-24 with total page 696 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everyone knows about the Revolutionary War, but few know the true story of Benjamin Franklin's secret plan to turn the northern and southern colonies against their oppressors, and how the freeing of one slave, Somersett, was the catalyst for the colonies to come together against the crown. In 1757, Benjamin Franklin cared most about the security and prosperity of his beloved adopted home of Philadelphia. Threatened by the French during King George's War and with little help from the proprietor of Pennsylvania, the Penn family, Franklin sought assistance in London to force Thomas Penn's hand. However, at every turn he found no encouragement, leading Franklin to develop a secret plan to free Pennsylvania and ultimately all thirteen colonies.Launching this secret plan required politically motivating all the colonies, each with vastly different individual interests. Ultimately, it was two very different historical events that provided the motivation and the eventual success of Franklin's plan.Meticulously detailed and with supporting notes, Somersett tells the real story behind the origins of the Revolutionary War and explains how several well-known but random events during the war culminated in the creation of the United States of America.
