Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new, validated survey instrument, SPEAR (Superintendents' Professional Expectations and Advancement Review), asked top executives about their opinions, skills, perceptions on a range of career concerns, and future interests. Of the nation's 13,500 school superintendents, a random sample of 2,979 was selected, segmented by district size. The overall finding is that superintendents are proud and satisfied with their own accomplishments, but greatly concerned about the prospect of finding talented leaders to take their places. Some of the questions explored in the survey include the following: Is there a crisis in attracting educators into the profession? How satisfied are superintendents with their careers? How mobile are superintendents? What are their professional concerns? What personal concerns and motives do they express? and What skills do they bring to the job? The report provides a brief description of its findings and recommendations as well. The appendix contains the SPEAR questionnaire. (Contains 21 references.) (DFR)

To identify all the sources of information, and to list documents that discuss research on teachers’ attitudes. It does not include an assessment of the quality of the research reported in the listed documents, however, the value is in its comprehensiveness. Users of the bibliography can locate the listed studies and then evaluate the studies using criteria relevant to their individual purposes.

Book excerpt: This qualitative study explored the perceived rewards and barriers and the balance of these perceptions that contribute to job satisfaction among public elementary school principals and assistant principals. The study took place in 17 school districts in the South-Central region of Pennsylvania. The participants were elementary school principals and assistant principals currently serving in schools with students in grades kindergarten through sixth. The instruments used in this study were the Minnesota Satisfaction Questionnaire consisting of 20 Likert-type statement responses, three open-response questions, and individual interviews. Thirty-two administrators participated in the questionnaire and six administrators participated in the interviews. The results of this study suggest that the elementary school administrators in this region are generally satisfied with their jobs. The administrators reported the rewarding aspect of their job that was most important was the opportunity to help children learn and find success. The administrators also reported that a lack of support from supervisors and frustration due to staff issues were the two most important barriers to their job satisfaction. Participants reported that they achieved balance with the rewards and barriers by focusing on the rewards, such as working with children, rather than focusing on the barriers. Some administrators expressed that finding a balance was challenging.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When we think about school principals, most of us imagine a figure of vague, yet intimidating authority—for an elementary school student, being sent to the principal’s office is roughly on par with a trip to Orwell’s Room 101. But with School Principal, Dan C. Lortie aims to change that. Much as he did for teachers with his groundbreaking book Schoolteacher, Lortie offers here an intensive and detailed look at principals, painting a compelling portrait of what they do, how they do it, and why. Lortie begins with a brief history of the job before turning to the daily work of a principal. These men and women, he finds, stand at the center of a constellation of competing interests around and within the school. School district officials, teachers, parents, and students all have needs and demands that frequently clash, and it is the principal’s job to manage these conflicting expectations to best serve the public. Unsurprisingly then, Lortie records his subjects’ professional dissatisfactions, but he also vividly depicts the pleasures of their work and the pride they take in their accomplishments. Finally, School Principal offers a glimpse of the future with an analysis of current issues and trends in education, including the increasing presence of women in the role and the effects of widespread testing mandated by the government. Lortie’s scope is both broad and deep, offering an eminently useful range of perspectives on his subject. From the day-to-day toil to the long-term course of an entire career, from finding out just what goes on inside that office to mapping out the larger social and organizational context of the job, School Principal is a truly comprehensive account of a little-understood profession.
