Book excerpt: The context of higher education business faculty is changing as a result of the chronic degradation in the production of traditional faculty with doctorates in business-related disciplines (Mauldin, McManis, & Breaux, 2011). As a result of the decline in traditional (first) career path business faculty, non-traditional (second) career path business faculty are transitioning into the academy with a breadth and depth of professional business experience that is now being sought by business schools (Garrison, 2005). The purpose of this study was to identify and compare the factors related to job satisfaction for full-time first and second career business faculty teaching in accredited business programs at public, master's level colleges and universities located in the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) accreditation region. Herzberg's Motivator-Hygiene Theory was used as the theoretical framework for this study. Utilizing the constructs of personal characteristics, job characteristics, job satisfaction, and perceived work environment, an online survey collected data from full-time first and second career college and university business faculty. The researcher investigated the importance of and differences in perceptions of Herzberg's motivator-hygiene factors for first and second career business faculty. Additionally, the researcher investigated the relationship between job satisfaction and the motivator-hygiene factors for each category of faculty. Finally, the researcher investigated differences in job satisfaction based on business school accreditation agency and predictors of job satisfaction for first and second career business faculty. Study results indicated higher overall mean scores and identical individual rankings of the motivator factors and lower overall mean scores and nearly identical rankings of the hygiene factors. No statistically significant differences in motivator and hygiene factor mean scores were observed between first and second career faculty. Study results revealed medium to moderately strong positive correlations between job satisfaction and the motivator and hygiene factors for first and second career faculty. No significant difference in job satisfaction was observed for first and second career faculty. Multiple regression analysis produced a predictive model of four motivator and hygiene factors for first career faculty and a second career model including personal and job characteristics and motivator and hygiene factors.

Book excerpt: Higher education systems have changed all over the world, but not all have changed in the same ways. Although system growth and so-called massification have been worldwide themes, there have been system-specific changes as well. It is these changes that have an important impact on academic work and on the opinions of the staff that work in higher education. The academic profession has a key role to play in producing the next generations of knowledge workers, and this task will be more readily achieved by a contented academic workforce working within well-resourced teaching and research institutions. This volume tells the story of academics’ opinions about the changes in their own countries. The Changing Academic Profession (CAP) survey has provided researchers and policy makers with the capacity to compare the academic profession around the world. Built around national analyses of the survey this book examines academics’ opinions on a range of issues to do with their job satisfaction. Following an introduction that considers the job satisfaction literature as it relates to higher education, country-based chapters examine aspects of job satisfaction within each country.

This book was released on 1998 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Purpose of the study. The purpose of the study was to establish a baseline of information about the job satisfaction of full-time business faculty members of higher education institutions in Kaduna State, Nigeria. Methodology. The Minnesota Satisfaction Questionnaire and a Demographic Information Form were used in collecting the data from full-time business faculty members from Kaduna State, based on a judgemental or purposive sample. A one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and descriptive statistics were used to analyze the data. Findings. Three hypotheses (gender, length of employment, and highest degree attained) were rejected. A follow-up post test for length of employment and highest degree attained did not reveal any statistical significant effect at the.05 level. The findings showed that female full-time business faculty were more satisfied than their male counterpart and the longer the length of service, the lower the job satisfaction. The study also showed that faculty members with professional certifications, bachelor's degrees, and post doctorates had greater job satisfaction. In contrast, there was no interaction with job satisfaction on salary, age, academic rank, type of institution, and teaching responsibilities. Results of two open-ended questions concerning what full-time business faculty members liked and disliked most about their jobs showed that teaching and transmitting knowledge are the most-liked aspects of their jobs. Poor salaries/wages and fringe benefits are what full-time business faculty members disliked most about their jobs.

Book excerpt: Research indicates that Millennials will represent forty-seven percent of the workforce in 2014, and evolve to dominate the global workplace as the prominent generational cohort by 2020. These demographic projections surface major considerations for recruitment and succession planning within the business realm; and especially higher education. Millennials have distinct attributes that govern their perspectives on the workplace that differ significantly from other generations. The purpose of this study was to investigate how the idiosyncrasies of this generation\U+2019\s workplace preferences (specific to the Millennial faculty population) impact job satisfaction. The research inquiry was launched utilizing institutional data from four-year public and private institutions in the Southeast in order to assess the relationship between overall job satisfaction and mentoring satisfaction; and to compare Millennial faculty job satisfaction to senior generations. The institutional data for this study was provided by the Harvard University Graduate School of Education\U+2019\s Collaborative on Academic Careers in Higher Education (COACHE)\U+2019\s survey results.

Book excerpt: Non full-time faculty—whether adjunct, part-time or contingent—has become the lifeline of a vast majority of colleges and universities. They teach many of the foundation and core courses taken by first- and second-year students, teach professional courses in which their own life experiences are invaluable, and step in at short notice to fill-in for regular faculty engaged in research or away on sabbaticals.A survey of over 4,000 institutions conducted by the US Department of Education reveals that such faculty are being hired at a much higher rate than their full-time counterparts--whether in response to increased enrollments, reduced budgets, or changing administrative strategies. The increasing presence of such faculty on campus can conflict with today’s demands for accountability and the pursuit of institutional mission. This book provides academic administrators and faculty developers with proactive, practical and results-producing approaches that can help transform fragmented faculties into integrated and cohesive teaching and scholarly communities. In an easy-to-follow format, this book constitutes a resource of thoughtful and pragmatic strategies to ensure quality and satisfaction both on the part of the institution and the adjuncts. Topics are presented in a thematic sequence that allows decision-makers to focus on their priority areas. The author offers guidance for systematic planning and implementation. The contents are focused on connecting non full-time faculty to core institutional functions and structures: Connection #1--to the institution; Connection #2--to the department; Connection #3--to teaching; Connection #4--to Students; and Connection #5--to scholarship.Originally announced as "Connecting Adjunct Faculty to the Academic Institution"
