Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With more than 23 million Americans looking for work, job generation is a priority for restoring the American economy. Yet many of the unemployed and underemployed are not looking for just any job, but the right job, one that will complement their skill sets and desires. The right choice for many is working alongside innovative entrepreneurs who are playing a major role in changing today's business climate. Steven R. Musick, owner of the decades old company Destiny Capital and a Professor at the University of Denver, believes the key to job generation is tapping into America's exceptional entrepreneurial spirit fueled by hundreds of thousands of young, creative people. But once they have found their Big Idea, many creative minds often find themselves a loss for how to make it take seed, find capital to expand, distinguish themselves in the marketplace from their competitors along with a myriad of other issues that face an entrepreneur. At the same time, with millions on the job market, how do potential employees stand out during an interview, knowing the right questions to ask to separate themselves from the sea of other candidates?Professor Musick has the answers in this informative, challenging book, a key component of his entrepreneurial class. This book is full of real life examples of model companies whose time-tested management techniques and forward thinking processes have made themselves leaders in their industries, always ahead of their competitors with new ideas that allow their companies to grow, adding jobs to the American economy. Life lessons are also here for job seekers, with stories from workers whose thought provoking interviews have allowed them to clinch the job, letting their unique skills become integral components which have helped propel their chosen companies to the top of their sectors. With this book, Professor Musick shows that job generation, the way to keep America on a steady path of growth, can be achieved by those with the right entrepreneurial spirit and the skills to keep the economy humming. How will America get back on the right track? Job generation is the answer.

Book excerpt: This book exposes how the Small Business Administration (SBA) and the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB), using erroneous data, have developed and perpetuated the belief that "small business creates all the new jobs". It shows further that, since the early 1990s, this belief has become a mantra for allowing the SBA and NBIF to lobby effectively for preferential treatment such as low-interest loans and exemption from mandated employee benefits and worker safety regulations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This clear, accessible volume provides a comprehensive overview of the ongoing debate over the determining factors of and key influences on employment growth and labor market training, education, and related policies in the United States. Drawing on the work of distinguished labor economists, the chapters tackle questions posed by job and skill demands in the "new high-tech economy" and explore sources of employment growth; productivity growth and its implications for future employment; government mandates, labor costs, and employment; and labor force demographics, income inequality, and returns to human capital. These topics are central concerns for government, which must judge every prospective policy proposal by its effects on employment growth. Washington keeps at least one eye firmly on the jobs picture, and public officials at every level are constantly aware of the issues surrounding American job security. The jobs issue reaches beyond this focus on the unemployment rate and on total employment, including the rate at which employment is seen as growing, the growth of real wages, the security of employment, returns to human capital, uncertainty about the education and training best suited for a world of rapidly changing economic conditions, and the distribution of the gains from growth across economic classes and population groups.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book argues that inequality of basic freedoms—economic, political, sociocultural—is a central cause of fragility and challenge to job creation in fragile geopolitical situations. It is based on extensive official data and stakeholder interactions in the conflict-ridden Indian border state of Jammu and Kashmir, and involves a case study research methodology. This is the first book which invokes the philosophical perspective of freedom to analyze two of the most pressing challenges of our time—fragility and job creation—and, as such, makes a fundamental contribution to both strands of academic and policy literature. From this perspective, development in the sense of freedoms—particularly the enhancement of human agency through jobs—should be a central strategy in tackling fragility. Most literature on Indian Kashmir has been emotional or political in nature, lacking the serious yet interesting multidisciplinary focus presented here—which is a historical assessment of Kashmir’s political economy, economic indices, employment patterns, challenges of infrastructure and human capital. Ending with a set of long-, medium- and immediate-term policy recommendations to address the challenge of jobs in the state, this is the only book on Indian Kashmir which is at once philosophical, social-scientific and policy-oriented in nature. Academics in development studies, regional development, political science and international relations, international organizations working in fragile regions around the world, national and international policymakers, the private sector, civil society, media as well as ordinary readers interested in the issue of Kashmir will find it engaging and useful.

Book excerpt: The question of economic transformation is an immediate and practical one for the English-speaking Caribbean. In the postindependence period, Caribbean governments seemed blissfully unaware that the inability to transform their economies was leading to serious unemployment problems. The statistics are quite stark. Unemployment rates in the Caribbean range from 6% in the more prosperous states to 23% in the less prosperous ones. This use of economic transformation and job creation continues to be a major challenge in the first decade of the twenty-first Century. This is the subject that is treated with impressive urgency in this volume entitled Economic Transformation and Job Creation: The Caribbean Experience.

Book excerpt: This paper examines the extent to which firms in selected MENA countries reported being constrained by the business environment around the time of the Arab Spring and the extent to which these constraints affected their employment performance. The results suggest that small firms in MENA faced more structural constraints than similar firms in other regions. We also find that MENA firms’ weaker job creation can be explained in great part by the macroeconomic environment and structural constraints. Low GDP growth, falling external competitiveness, corruption, lack of access to finance and poor access to electricity are found to explain a significant part of the lack of employment growth in MENA firms compared to their peers.

Book excerpt: This scholarly book focuses on the issue of high unemployment and the challenges related thereto in South Africa. It demonstrates the urgent need for research into the contribution of job creation to poverty alleviation and economic growth. This research is relevant from a legal, economic and social sciences point of view. The main thesis of the book is to explore the influence of labour legislation on job creation. It investigates sustainability regarding employment relationships through the lens of the two primary participants: business and organised labour. This book adds value to the social justice context from both a societal and business point of view. It provides business and unionised labour a voice from which the influence of labour legislation on job creation and job sustainability can be addressed.

Magolda and Jill Ellen Carnaghi place new professionals' stories “center stage.” The book focuses on narratives written by new professionals about their introduction and transitions into Student Affairs work. These stories document the joys and angst felt as new professionals prepare to transition from graduate school to work, search for their first Student Affairs position, assimilate campus norms, formulate a professional identity, satisfy supervisors' expectations, mediate cultural conflicts, and remain true to their personal and professional values. This book is a useful resource inviting new professionals, supervisors, and faculty to think differently about the on-going education and needs of new professionals, while offering a new perspective for optimizing new professionals' experiences.
