Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jimmie the blue crab wakes up hungry. In his search for food, he encounters a toadfish that might eat him and a crab pot that could carry him up and away. Jimmie survives these perils because the toadfish is full of oysters, and he is small enough that he falls through and escapes the crab pot. He meets a diamond back terrapin turtle named Terrie and they become fast friends while searching for food together. Jimmie and Terrie find a dead fish and eat it all up. They then hide in some seagrass and sleep for the night. During the night, Jimmy sloughs out of his old small shell and is now a little bigger. The next morning, Jimmie and Terrie again go searching for food. Jimmie the Crab: An Adventure in the Chesapeake Bay includes photographs of the underwater animals in the book and some information about each one. The events in the story are real-life scenarios that play out beneath the surface of Chesapeake Bay any time of year when the water temp is high enough for crabs and turtles to be active.

During the same period, Captain Augustus Elsworth Phillips, Jr. was the captain of the cargo schooner, McCready. In her aft-cabin a boy, Brice Phillips would be conceived. Brice Phillips and Shirley Flowers would marry and have two sons, Steve and Jeffrey. With the family’s Hoopers Island packing plant as a base, the Phillips would create a worldwide empire based upon their relationship with the crab. This is the story of that family. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This wide-ranging collection of essays addresses a diverse and expanded vision of Montana literature, offering new readings of both canonical and overlooked texts. Although a handful of Montana writers such as Richard Hugo, A. B. Guthrie Jr., D'Arcy McNickle, and James Welch have received considerable critical attention, sizable gaps remain in the analysis of the state's ever-growing and ever-evolving canon. The twelve essays in "All Our Stories Are Here" not only build on the exemplary, foundational work of other writers but also open further interpretative and critical conversations. Expanding on the critical paradigms of the past and bringing to bear some of the latest developments in literary and cultural studies, the contributors engage issues such as queer ambivalence in Montana writing, representations of the state in popular romances, and the importance of the University of Montana's creative writing program in fostering the state's literary corpus. The contributors also explore the work of writers who have not yet received their critical due, take new looks at old friends, and offer some of the first explorations of recent works by well-established artists. "All Our Stories Are Here" conveys a sense of continuity in the field of Western literary criticism, while at the same time challenging conventional approaches to regional literature.

Book excerpt: For centuries, dating back to the time of the Native Americans, the fertile soils and the bountiful bays and salt marshes of the Delmarva Peninsula have fed its people well. Over the generations, its food culture has become intertwined with the history of the people who call this land home. Food determined where people lived, how they traveled, how their economy functioned and how they celebrated and shared the products of soil and salt water. Local writer and photographer Curtis Badger narrates this history with recipes based on seasonal bounty.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now in its sixth decade, country music studies is a thriving field of inquiry involving scholars working in the fields of American history, folklore, sociology, anthropology, musicology, ethnomusicology, cultural studies, and geography, among many others. Covering issues of historiography and practice as well as the ways in which the genre interacts with media and social concerns such as class, gender, and sexuality, The Oxford Handbook of Country Music interrogates prevailing narratives, explores significant lacunae in the current literature, and provides guidance for future research. More than simply treating issues that have emerged within this subfield, The Oxford Handbook of Country Music works to connect to broader discourses within the various fields that inform country music studies in an effort to strengthen the area's interdisciplinarity. Drawing upon the expertise of leading and emerging scholars, this Handbook presents an introduction into the historiographical narratives and methodological issues that have emerged in country music studies' first half-century.
