Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Demon warrior puppets, sword-wielding Taoist priests, spirit mediums lacerating their bodies with spikes and blades—these are among the most dramatic images in Chinese religion. Usually linked to the propitiation of plague gods and the worship of popular military deities, such ritual practices have an obvious but previously unexamined kinship with the traditional Chinese martial arts. The long and durable history of martial arts iconography and ritual in Chinese religion suggests something far deeper than mere historical coincidence. Avron Boretz argues that martial arts gestures and movements are so deeply embedded in the ritual repertoire in part because they iconify masculine qualities of violence, aggressivity, and physical prowess, the implicit core of Chinese patriliny and patriarchy. At the same time, for actors and audience alike, martial arts gestures evoke the mythos of the jianghu, a shadowy, often violent realm of vagabonds, outlaws, and masters of martial and magic arts. Through the direct bodily practice of martial arts movement and creative rendering of jianghu narratives, martial ritual practitioners are able to identify and represent themselves, however briefly and incompletely, as men of prowess, a reward otherwise denied those confined to the lower limits of this deeply patriarchal society. Based on fieldwork in China and Taiwan spanning nearly two decades, Gods, Ghosts, and Gangsters offers a thorough and original account of violent ritual and ritual violence in Chinese religion and society. Close-up, sensitive portrayals and the voices of ritual actors themselves—mostly working-class men, many of them members of sworn brotherhoods and gangs—convincingly link martial ritual practice to the lives and desires of men on the margins of Chinese society. This work is a significant contribution to the study of Chinese ritual and religion, the history and sociology of Chinese underworld, the history and anthropology of the martial arts, and the anthropology of masculinity.

Book excerpt: The fast diffusion of information and communication technologies (ICTs) in China has brought forth new forms of connection among the Chinese and has changed their social lives. Virtual networks have been developed and in turn have led to the formation of networks in the actual world. This collection explores the resultant complications in the relationship between virtual, actual, and local interactions. It discusses various aspects of the implications of the new connectivities on these three types of interactions in China. The topics examined include: the possibility of the development of civil society in China, the implications for the migrant workers in the south, the challenge posed to the traditional social order, and the relationship between the new connectivities and the Chinese social context.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eastern Approaches to Western Film: Asian Aesthetics and Reception in Cinema offers a renewed critical outlook on Western classic film directly from the pantheon of European and American masters, including Alfred Hitchcock, George Lucas, Robert Bresson, Carl Dreyer, Jean-Pierre Melville, John Ford, Leo McCarey, Sam Peckinpah, and Orson Welles. The book contributes an “Eastern Approach” into the critical studies of Western films by reappraising selected films of these masters, matching and comparing their visions, themes, and ideas with the philosophical and paradigmatic principles of the East. It traces Eastern inscriptions and signs embedded within these films as well as their social lifestyle values and other concepts that are also inherently Eastern. As such, the book represents an effort to reformulate established discourses on Western cinema that are overwhelmingly Eurocentric. Although it seeks to inject an alternative perspective, the ultimate aim is to reach a balance of East and West. By focusing on Eastern aesthetic and philosophical influences in Western films, the book suggests that there is a much more thorough integration of East and West than previously thought or imagined.

Book excerpt: This pioneering book is the first English-language collection of academic articles on Jin Yong's works. It introduces an important dissenting voice in Chinese literature to the English-speaking audience. Jin Yong is hailed as the most influential martial arts novelist in twentieth-century Chinese literary history. His novels are regarded by readers and critics as "the common language of Chinese around the world" because of their international circulation and various adaptations (film, television serials, comic books, video games). Not only has the public affirmed the popularity and literary value of his novels, but the academic world has finally begun to notice his achievement as well. The significance of this book lies in its interpretation of Jin Yong's novels through the larger lens of twentieth-century Chinese literature. It considers the important theoretical issues arising from such terms as modernity, gender, nationalism, East/West conflict, and high literature versus low culture. The contributors of the articles are all eminent scholars, including famous exiled scholar, philosopher, and writer Liu Zaifu.

Book excerpt: Buddha said: "The Eight Tribes of Heaven Dragon, Man and Man, all see the Dragon Lady become Buddha." As for the gods, the dragons, the yakshas, the kanda, the asura, the garuda, and the mandara. After the Dragon and Heaven, the most tragic one was Carrolo, because he was Yue Fei's embodiment. Carrolo was a kind of giant bird with all kinds of solemn and precious colors on its wings. Legend has it that Yue Fei was the reincarnation of the Golden Winged Roc, and Jia Luo was the reincarnation of the Golden Winged Roc. When its life ended, the dragons vomited poison and were no longer able to eat. As a result, Garuda flew up and down seven times before finally dying on top of the Vajra Mountain. The complicated plot, ups and downs, locked in a clumsy work, all of this is in the "Heavenly Dragon's Eight Postscript." [Previous Chapter] [Table of Contents] [Next Chapter] Close]

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores and brings to light untold stories from the margins of Chinese society. It investigates and reveals grassroots and popular cultural beliefs, amusing anecdotes, items of lore, and accounts of the strange and the unusual. It delves into questions of identity formation, considering gender, sexuality, class, generational divides, subcultures, national minorities and online communities. It examines heritage-making practices and the persistence of marginalized memories. Bringing together views from cultural studies, literature, gender studies, cultural heritage, sociology, history and more, the book argues that neither the margins nor the centre can be understood in isolation, and that by focusing on the margins, a fuller picture of Chinese society overall emerges, including new perspectives on spatial and social marginality, on hierarchies of marginality, and on neglected spaces, voices and identities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Huang Xiang 黄翔, the protagonist of this book, was born on 26th December 1941 in Guidong county, Hunan province of central China. After the Communists came to power in 1949, he was imprisoned six times and severely persecuted for his free-spirited writing and his campaigns for human rights. For more than thirty years, this self-educated poet and writer, wrote secretly against the bondage of totalitarian ideology to safe-guard the freedom of speech. According to the author of the book, Huang is a great dark poet who has expressed the painful memories, fears and struggles that haunted his life creating wonderful poetic beauty in the darkness. His poetic creation is a miracle in the history of Chinese contemporary literature. We may say that Huang's identity as an unknown dark poet is conditioned by his personal, emotional and tragic experiences of struggles while facing historical events such as the Cultural Revolution from 1966 to 1976, the April 5th Movement in 1976, the Democracy Wall Movement in 1978 and the Pro-Democracy Movement in 1989 in China.
