Book excerpt: What if Jesus didn't die to save us from God? The doctrine of Penal Substitutionary Atonement is not the Gospel. It's a theory that originated in the 1500s under John Calvin. The damage done by this teaching is still being felt today. It's time to abandon this toxic theology in favor of a Christ-centered view of the cross that sets us free from sin and unveils a God of love who would rather die than live without us.

Download or read book Forsaken written by Thomas H. McCall and published by InterVarsity Press. This book was released on 2012-04-08 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "My God, My God, why have you forsaken me?" How should a Christian interpret this passage? What implications does the cross have for the trinitarian theology? Did the Father kill the Son? Theologian Thomas McCall presents a trinitarian reading of Christ's darkest moment--the moment of his prayer to his heavenly Father from the cross. McCall revisits the biblical texts and surveys the various interpretations of Jesus cry, ranging from early church theologians to the Reformation to contemporary theologians. Along the way, he explains the terms of the scholarly debate and clearly marks out what he believes to be the historically orthodox point of view. By approaching the Son's cry to the Father as an event in the life of the Triune God, Forsaken seeks to recover the true poignancy of the orthodox perspective on the cross.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Gospel-Rich, Reproducible Model for Making Disciples as Jesus Intended Biblical discipleship emphasizes encouragement, repentance, and spiritual growth—essential parts of the Christian life. However, well-meaning believers often struggle to follow Jesus, unaware their views are too legalistic, licentious, or individualistic. How can churches and Christians develop a healthy, successful path to disciple-making? In this second edition of Gospel-Centered Discipleship, Jonathan Dodson presents an effective, Spirit-led model for sanctification. Reminding readers that real discipleship is imperfect yet transformational, Dodson encourages Christians to engage more authentically with others as they grow in faith. Drawing from his own failures and successes while following Jesus, Dodson defines discipleship, describes the heart of a disciple, and gives practical guidance for mentor and peer-based discipleship as Jesus intended. Revised and Expanded: Includes three new chapters and new illustrations Applicable: Shows how discipleship can be practical and gospel-centered Theological: Addresses the Holy Spirit's involvement in discipleship Foreword by Matt Chandler: Author of The Explicit Gospel
Book Synopsis Constructing Eschatology by : Nixon de Vera
Download or read book Constructing Eschatology written by Nixon de Vera and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2022-01-03 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work seeks to provide a critical analysis of the prophecies in the book of Isaiah that parallels the prophetic insights in the book of Revelation. The underlying question is, “To what extent has God foreordained things, especially before and during the final judgment?” The author thinks all that concerns God’s majestic plan, i.e., to accomplish God’s purpose for humanity, is covered in its entirety. God is highly active in foreordaining things, and whatever God foreordains shall be fulfilled in the end. Isaiah’s conception of the interplay between the themes of punishment and healing is central to his eschatological trajectory. In this respect, theologically speaking, the total restoration of Israel signifies the restoration of all humankind. Such an eschatology might accommodate the notion of Christian Universalism.

Book Synopsis God's Son "Forsaken," His Sacrifice "Finished!" by : Ken Lenz
Download or read book God's Son "Forsaken," His Sacrifice "Finished!" written by Ken Lenz and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2017-01-30 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of the seven statements Christ uttered from the cross, two stand out as being extremely significant in confirming what was being accomplished through the atoning sacrifice of Christ. The question, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?” gives us a sense of what was in “the cup” of God’s wrathful judgment, which Jesus drank to its bitterest dregs on our behalf. The exclamation, “It is finished!” unquestionably assures us that the Savior’s atoning sacrifice accomplished what was necessary in satisfactorily paying the debt owed for our sin. Your gratitude and faith will be strengthened as you read this book. This book is unique in the following ways: 1. This book focuses on only two of the seven statements Christ made while on the cross, and they are brought together in testimony to the most profound truths concerning God’s plan of salvation. 2. This book includes alternative viewpoints (including historical perspectives) and challenges unbiblical perspectives in regard to these statements of Christ and their significance, including some church dogmas. 3. This book demonstrates that salvation is graciously offered by God based on an individual’s repentant faith. Jesus Christ purchased our redemption. All that is left is for us to repent of sin and receive the Savior. Would you like a “faith lift” today? Would you like your heart to grow in love and gratitude toward the Savior? If so, this book is for you.

Book Synopsis Once Loved Always Loved by : Andrew Hronich
Download or read book Once Loved Always Loved written by Andrew Hronich and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2023-02-23 with total page 471 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Andrew Hronich endeavors to synthesize the many strands of orthodox doctrine into a single telos: ultimate reconciliation. While a great deal of ink has already been spilled on this subject, this book addresses ponderances previously overlooked due to a lack of ecumenical dialogue between the differing streams of Christian tradition. Ancient lights, such as Origen, Gregory of Nyssa, and Clement of Alexandria are given a voice to speak again to the masses, whilst contemporary thinkers, such as Thomas Talbott, David Bentley Hart, and Eric Reitan, are unleashed upon the unwitting world of Christian philosophy. Stagnant tradition has hindered the church from abiding by its historic motto semper reformanda, but with its ecumenical voice, this book calls on Protestants, Catholics, and Orthodox adherents alike to acknowledge apokatastasis panton, the salvation of all beings, as the orthodoxy it always has been.
Book Synopsis The Apostles' Creed by : William Barclay
Download or read book The Apostles' Creed written by William Barclay and published by Westminster John Knox Press. This book was released on 1998-11-01 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "If there is one statement of the Christian Church, it is contained in the Apostles' Creed," writes William Barclay. Professor Barclay reminds us, however, that the Creed should be seen not so much as a test and yardstick of orthodoxy, but rather as a symbolic, pictorial and poetic representation of a truth--a truth that Christian should constantly rethink and restate for themselves. Barclay's insights are particularly valuable at a time when many traditional beliefs are being questioned, both by theologians and lay people. He manages to bridge the gap between the academic and lay worlds while addressing the most profound issues of the Christian faith. The William Barclay Library is a collection of books addressing the great issues of the Christian faith. As one of the world's most widely read interpreters of the Bible and its meaning, William Barclay devoted his life to helping people become more faithful disciples of Jesus Christ.
Book Synopsis CONSIDER JESUS by : Octavius Winslow
Download or read book CONSIDER JESUS written by Octavius Winslow and published by Felipe chavarro. This book was released on with total page 85 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Is not this the carpenter's son?"--Matthew 13:55 What a remarkable fact in the history of Jesus does this question, asked with mingled surprise and contempt, betray! It presents Him in a point of light in which, perhaps, few have paused to study Him, and yet than which there is scarcely another more real and instructive. It invites us to consider Jesus as the Son of man, as the son of a carpenter, and in all probability, until He began to be about thirty years of age, assisting Joseph in his humble calling. Hence it was asked concerning Jesus, "Is not this the carpenter?" How truly did the Son of God identify Himself with the humanity and the curse He came to ransom and remove. And when we see those hands which built the universe building earthly dwellings for man--squaring the beam, plying the saw, thrusting the plane, driving the nail, constructing and raising the framework--we behold personally Him tasting the bitterness of that part of the curse which enjoined, "In the sweat of your face shall you eat bread."
Book Synopsis Our Father Forsaken by : HJ Sean Moon
Download or read book Our Father Forsaken written by HJ Sean Moon and published by Beaufort Books. This book was released on 2019-11-04 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bold and forceful in its condemnation of contemporary religion, Our Father Forsaken is a meticulously researched work that demands the attention of all Jews and Christians who seek the truth. In 120 A.D., Marcion of Sinope, a charismatic preacher, appeared in Rome to reveal the "hidden" teachings of Jesus. The real Jesus, according to Marcion, was a pure spirit sent from the highest God to free mankind from the clutches of the evil God of the Old Testament, a lesser deity among the thousands of celestial beings. The disparity between the God of Moses and the God of Jesus, Marcion maintained, was obvious with rational comparison of Old and New Testaments. The God of the Old Testament demanded "an eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth," while Jesus said: "Do not resist an evil person. If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also." Although Marcion was drummed out of Rome in disgrace, his movement never died and it crystallized into the religion of Freemasonry. In the 19th Century, Marcionism was embraced by the German rationalists and made its way into contemporary Christianity. Such rationalists argued that the Torah had been composed not by Moses but a host of sources and could not be accepted as authentic. The New Testament, they argued, was equally unreliable. It was composed not by eyewitnesses but editors and that the gospel accounts had been subjected to the process of myth-making. The theology of the rationalists was taught in every leading Catholic and Protestant seminary in the United States. Since the scriptures were "contradictory" and a product of primitive times, students of religion were taught that Christian doctrine should be centered, on the "social gospel"—a gospel stripped of all supernatural elements and all passages deemed offensive to modern sensibilities. The result has been the creation of a religion that is devoid of the ambiguity and precariousness of life, of the awe before the divine majesty, and the judgment before the ineffable holiness.
