Download or read book Jerusalem written by Merav Mack and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2019-05-14 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A captivating journey through the hidden libraries of Jerusalem, where some of the world’s most enduring ideas were put into words In this enthralling book, Merav Mack and Benjamin Balint explore Jerusalem’s libraries to tell the story of this city as a place where some of the world’s most enduring ideas were put into words. The writers of Jerusalem, although renowned the world over, are not usually thought of as a distinct school; their stories as Jerusalemites have never before been woven into a single narrative. Nor have the stories of the custodians, past and present, who safeguard Jerusalem’s literary legacies. By showing how Jerusalem has been imagined by its writers and shelved by its librarians, Mack and Balint tell the untold history of how the peoples of the book have populated the city with texts. In their hands, Jerusalem itself—perched between East and West, antiquity and modernity, violence and piety—comes alive as a kind of labyrinthine library.

Download or read book Jerusalem written by Simon Goldhill and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2010-03-30 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jerusalem is the site of some of the most famous religious monuments in the world, from the Dome of the Rock to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre to the Western Wall of the Temple. Since the nineteenth century, the city has been a premier tourist destination, not least because of the countless religious pilgrims from the three Abrahamic faiths. But Jerusalem is more than a tourist site—it is a city where every square mile is layered with historical significance, religious intensity, and extraordinary stories. It is a city rebuilt by each ruling Empire in its own way: the Jews, the Romans, the Christians, the Muslims, and for the past sixty years, the modern Israelis. What makes Jerusalem so unique is the heady mix, in one place, of centuries of passion and scandal, kingdom-threatening wars and petty squabbles, architectural magnificence and bizarre relics, spiritual longing and political cruelty. It is a history marked by three great forces: religion, war, and monumentality. In this book, Simon Goldhill takes on this peculiar archaeology of human imagination, hope, and disaster to provide a tour through the history of this most image-filled and ideology-laden city—from the bedrock of the Old City to the towering roofs of the Holy Sepulchre. Along the way, we discover through layers of buried and exposed memories—the long history, the forgotten stories, and the lesser-known aspects of contemporary politics that continue to make Jerusalem one of the most embattled cities in the world.

Book excerpt: This work provides a comprehensive bibliography on modern research (19th century to the present) on the city of Jerusalem, with primary emphasis on Jerusalem as a holy city. Over 5,800 entries are arranged in 40 units under eight major headings: general studies on Jerusalem, Jerusalem during the Biblical period to 587 BC, Jerusalem during the Second Temple period, Roman Jerusalem, Jerusalem in Judaism, Christian Jerusalem, Jerusalem as a Muslim city, and Jerusalem in modern times. The individual chapter units within these major headings are concerned not only with the physical aspects of the city (geography/topography, archaeological excavations, walls, gates, tombs, churches, and other monuments) and its social/political history, but also_and especially_with its sacred traditions, Jewish, Christian, and Muslim. The organization of the material reflects the editor's experience in the teaching of this subject in a university setting. It has been compiled for the use of students from generally accessible titles. With author and subject indexes.

Book Synopsis New Forms of Consumption by : Mark Gottdiener
Download or read book New Forms of Consumption written by Mark Gottdiener and published by Rowman & Littlefield Publishers. This book was released on 2000-11-01 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Consumption as a field of cultural studies overlaps with theories of postmodernism, the social construction of self, commodification in late capitalism, and the role of mass media in daily life. New forms of consumption such as those facilitated by cyberspace, themed environments, the commodification of sex, and the increasing role of leisure in society all play new and interesting roles in daily life that combine consumerism with the most contemporary social forms. This collection of essays examines the recent ways in which consumerism has been approached by cultural studies with special emphasis given to these and other newly emerging topics. The book is divided into three parts. The first part provides a theoretical overview of consumption studies dealing with classical and more contemporary approaches in light of the debate between advocates and critics of postmodernism. In this section there are papers on McDonaldization, tourism and cultural studies, and the Theory of Shopping. The second part emphasizes empirical studies of the commodification process. Papers address the transformation of women’s bodies and the mass commodification of milk, the creation of the toddler as a subject and the commodification of childhood, the commodification of sports, and the commodification of rock music. The third section of the book explores new forms of consumption on a more detailed and concentrated level. Papers in this section include the rise of sex tourism as a global industry, the commodification of the sacred, and the emergence of new consumer spaces in the city. An introduction by the editor delineates the advantages of his approach to new forms of consumption based squarely in the emerging issues of cultural studies, debates transcending postmodernism, and the society of the spectacle.
