Book excerpt: Tom Burrows, and the exhibition that preceded the book, presents work by the artist from his early career to the present. The book is a timely refocusing of attention on an artist who has made an immense contribution to the development of art in Vancouver, not only as an artist but as an educator and activist as well. Burrows first rose to prominence in the late-1960s and was included in several exhibitions at the UBC Fine Arts Library, an institution that was seminal in encouraging Vancouver's growing and now vibrant art community. In 1975 he received a United Nations commission to document squatters communities in Europe, Africa and Asia, a work that is now in the Belkin's collection. Burrows' work, which demonstrates an interest in process and new materials, has encompassed a number of disciplines including sculpture, early performance art, video, painting and iconic hand-built houses on the Maplewood Mudflats and Hornby Island. Currently most well known for his innovative monochromatic cast polymer resin "paintings/sculptures" produced during the last forty-five years, the book examines the full breadth of his career with works from the Belkin's permanent collection as the basis with other works from the artist, collectors and public institutions. Burrows has had solo exhibitions in London, Rome, Tokyo, Berlin, New York, Edinburgh and across Canada. His work is included in private, corporate and public collections in Europe, Asia and the Americas.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first extensive survey catalogue of the work of Vancouver-based artist Ian Wallace—a key figure of the extraordinary artistic ferment in the Canadian city of Vancouver, a pioneer and theorist of its internationally regarded tradition of photo-conceptualism, and a teacher and colleague of such luminaries as Jeff Wall, Rodney Graham, and Stan Douglas. Energized by the dialectic tensions between monochrome painting and documentary or staged photography, between the emblematic sites of street, studio and nature, Wallace's practice fosters engagement with the persistent impulses of vanguard modernism. A distinguished company of European thinkers, curators and critics have been invited to consider Wallace's art, inspirations, and influence: Vanessa Joan Müller considers the persistence of the monochrome in the artist's oeuvre; Dieter Roelstraete addresses the dialectics of street and studio; and the eminent French philosopher Jacques Rancière pursues his on-going meditation on the politics of aesthetics, which has had a strong influence on Wallace's thinking about art. The indispensable reference includes extensive color reproductions, catalogue of exhibited works, a chronology, and thorough bibliographic information. Co-published by the Kunstverein für die Rheinlande und Westfalen (Düsseldorf), Witte de With center for contemporary art (Rotterdam), and the Kunsthalle Zürich Edited by Vanessa Joan Müller, Kunstverein für die Rheinlande und Westfalen, Beatrix Ruf, Kunsthalle Zürich, Nicolaus Schafhausen, Witte de With center for contemporary art Texts by Vanessa Joan Müller, Jacques Rancière, Dieter Roelstraete, Ian Wallace Interview by Renske Janssen

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today more than ever, series finales have become cultural touchstones that feed watercooler fodder and Twitter storms among a committed community of viewers. While the final episodes of The Fugitive and M*A*S*H continue to rank among the highest rated broadcasts, more recent shows draw legions of binge-watching fans. Given the importance of finales to viewers and critics alike, Howard and Bianculli along with the other contributors explore these endings and what they mean to the audience, both in terms of their sense of narrative and as episodes that epitomize an entire show. Bringing together a veritable “who’s who” of television scholars, journalists, and media experts, including Robert Thompson, Martha Nochimson, Gary Edgerton, David Hinckley, Kim Akass, and Joanne Morreale, the book offers commentary on some of the most compelling and often controversial final episodes in television history. Each chapter is devoted to a separate finale, providing readers with a comprehensive survey of these watershed moments. Gathering a unique international lineup of journalists and media scholars, the book also offers readers an intriguing variety of critical voices and perspectives.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fiftieth anniversary reissue of the founding media studies book that helped establish media art as a cultural category. First published in 1970, Gene Youngblood’s influential Expanded Cinema was the first serious treatment of video, computers, and holography as cinematic technologies. Long considered the bible for media artists, Youngblood’s insider account of 1960s counterculture and the birth of cybernetics remains a mainstay reference in today’s hypermediated digital world. This fiftieth anniversary edition includes a new Introduction by the author that offers conceptual tools for understanding the sociocultural and sociopolitical realities of our present world. A unique eyewitness account of burgeoning experimental film and the birth of video art in the late 1960s, this far- ranging study traces the evolution of cinematic language to the end of fiction, drama, and realism. Vast in scope, its prescient formulations include “the paleocybernetic age,” “intermedia,” the “artist as design scientist,” the “artist as ecologist,” “synaesthetics and kinesthetics,” and “the technosphere: man/machine symbiosis.” Outstanding works are analyzed in detail. Methods of production are meticulously described, including interviews with artists and technologists of the period, such as Nam June Paik, Jordan Belson, Andy Warhol, Stan Brakhage, Carolee Schneemann, Stan VanDerBeek, Les Levine, and Frank Gillette. An inspiring Introduction by the celebrated polymath and designer R. Buckminster Fuller—a perfectly cut gem of countercultural thinking in itself—places Youngblood’s radical observations in comprehensive perspective. Providing an unparalleled historical documentation, Expanded Cinema clarifies a chapter of countercultural history that is still not fully represented in the arthistorical record half a century later. The book will also inspire the current generation of artists working in ever-newer expansions of the cinematic environment and will prove invaluable to all who are concerned with the technologies that are reshaping the nature of human communication.
