When he asks for a job, Mr. Sims, the cafe owner, sends him out to catch bullfrogs for the menu. Money and frog catching - what a great solution for this active boy! But Nugget and Jem's little sister, Ellie, get in the way and ruin his plans. When he argues with Ellie, she stomps off in a huff, and Jem can get back to work. Book excerpt: Gertrude Stein, as a college student at Radcliffe and a medical student at Johns Hopkins Medical School, was a privileged woman, but she was surrounded by women who were trapped by poverty, class, and race into lives that offered little choice. Her portraits of Anna and Lena are examples of realistic depictions of immigrant women who had no occupational choice but to become domestic workers. This collection of documents from the history of women's suffrage, medical history, modernist art, and literature enables readers to see how radical Stein's subject was.

Download or read book The River, Winter written by Jem Southam and published by Mack Publishing Company. This book was released on 2012 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In November 2010, after a photographic lull of half a year, Jem Southam took a photograph which became the first in this series, 'The River - Winter' and which spurred him to make one of the most concentrated bodies of work in his career. From late autumn through to the earliest signs of spring, along the banks of the river Exe in Devon, Southam chose locations and took photographs, returning at regular intervals. This pattern continued for the next five months with Southam documenting the subtle agencies of change transforming the landscape. By the end of January 2011 he realized this had become a new work, one that caught the effects of the Earth's turn on film, one which followed the passage of a single winter". -- From publisher's website.
Book Synopsis From Cooking Vessels to Cultural Practices in the Late Bronze Age Aegean by : Julie Hruby
Download or read book From Cooking Vessels to Cultural Practices in the Late Bronze Age Aegean written by Julie Hruby and published by Oxbow Books. This book was released on 2017-08-31 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Late Bronze Age Aegean cooking vessels illuminate prehistoric cultures, foodways, social interactions, and communication systems. While many scholars have focused on the utility of painted fineware vessels for chronological purposes, the contributors to this volume maintain that cooking wares have the potential to answer not only chronological but also economic, political, and social questions when analysed and contrasted with assemblages from different sites or chronological periods. The text is dedicated entirely to prehistoric cooking vessels, compiles evidence from a wide range of Greek sites and incorporates new methodologies and evidence. The contributors utilise a wide variety of analytical approaches and demonstrate the impact that cooking vessels can have on the archaeological interpretation of sites and their inhabitants. These sites include major Late Bronze Age citadels and smaller settlements throughout the Aegean and surrounding Mediterranean area, including Greece, the islands, Crete, Italy, and Cyprus. In particular, contributors highlight socio-economic connections by examining the production methods, fabrics and forms of cooking vessels. Recent improvements in excavation techniques, advances in archaeological sciences, and increasing attention to socioeconomic questions make this is an opportune time to renew conversations about and explore new approaches to cooking vessels and what they can teach us.

This book was released on 2021-05-06 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three Lives is a 1909 work of fiction by American writer Gertrude Stein. It is split into three independent stories, all set in the fictional American town of Bridgepoint. The Good Anna is the first of those stories and concentrates on a lower middle-class servant called Anna Federner. Melanctha is the longest of the stories and centres around distinctions and blending of sex, race, gender, and female health. The final story, The Gentle Lena, focuses on the life of the eponymous Lena, a German girl brought to Bridgepoint by her cousin. Gertrude Stein (1874–1946) was an American poet, novelist, art collector, and playwright who famously hosted a Paris salon frequented by the likes of F. Scott Fitzgerald, Pablo Picasso, and Ernest Hemingway. Other notable works by this author include: White Wines (1913), Tender Buttons - Objects. Food. Rooms. (1914), and An Exercise in Analysis (1917). Read & Co. Classics is proudly republishing this classic work now in a new edition complete with an introductory essay by Sherwood Anderson.
Download or read book Inez written by Linda J. Lumsden and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2004-07-08 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inez Milholland was the most glamorous suffragist of the 1910s and a fearless crusader for women's rights. Moving in radical circles, she agitated for social change in the prewar years, and she epitomized the independent New Woman of the time. Her death at age 30 while stumping for suffrage in California in 1916 made her the sole martyr of the American suffrage movement. Her death helped inspire two years of militant protests by the National Woman's Party, including the picketing of the White House, which led in 1920 to ratification of the 19th Amendment granting women the right to vote. Lumsden's study of this colorful and influential figure restores to history an important link between the homebound women of the 19th century and the iconoclastic feminists of the 1970s.
