Book excerpt: From a fifteen-year-old child who had spent four years as a slate picker in the mines of southern West Virginia, to a marine who earned a combat promotion to captain after distinguishing himself at the battle of the Chosin Reservoir during the Korean war, Rex Luther Buford leads an eventful life. Being determined to not live and die as his father had done struggling to get air into lungs ravaged by black lung caused by years of exposure to coal dust and with the reluctant blessing of his mother, Rex heads out into the world. With ten years traveling the world doing covert operations for various government agencies, he leaves the marine corps to become a troubleshooter for a New York investment firm. Rex Luther, having proven himself as the best, is able to pick his assignments; and when trouble in the coalfields catches the attention of corporate heads, Rex is asked to look into it. The "Long Journey Home" becomes a reality when he chooses to take the assignment and becomes embroiled in family and a struggle to suppress the emotional impact of being reunited with those he has loved from afar. As he slowly adjusts to becoming a member of the family he left years before, the actions of folks desperately trying to sweep the evidence of stealing coal shipments under the rug bring violence and turmoil to a once-peaceful valley. With the support of Sis, Frank, the experienced coal miner who he chose to cover his back, and Sandy, a schoolteacher transplanted from the city, he plows ahead with his investigation. As the facts emerge, some folks scramble for cover while others attempt to remove the evidence of their crimes and Rex Luther.

Book excerpt: When Bourret, a retired high school English teacher, was preparing to publish his "Jello's Nam: A Memoir" in 2018, he realized that, although he had left the Nam in 1968, the Nam had not left him, so he decided to write this sequel, which focuses on his circuitous road to healing. On his long odyssey, he would wrestle with his formidable PTSD demons. His journey began 22 years after his return from Vietnam, where he fought as a Marine during the 1968 Tet Offensive. In 1990, after having a flashback that terrified him, he realized that he needed to face his emotional pain from his war experiences. His journey would take him to war-torn Bosnia, back to Vietnam twice, and to the Vietnam Memorial. Many life lessons awaited this high school English teacher on his thirty-year search for healing. On his long journey, many people showed up in his life when he needed help with his healing process; he referred to these experiences as "corpsman, up!" moments . Likewise, he was also there to help one of his Nam friends, who had buried his Nam pain. Bourret, also chose to work with other vets, who were suffering from PTSD, as a volunteer teacher at his local VA. Fortunately, Bourret's tenacious nature and his resilient spirit served him well as he came to terms with his survivor's guilt, which had been brought on by the loss of 14 members of his battalion during a battle on May 19, 1968. With the help of Prolonged Exposure Therapy, he processed his grief, which led him to discover that life is a gift and that he had truly been blessed. With his new perspective, Bourret began to focus on finding ways to honor his fallen fellow Marines.

Book excerpt: Bestselling author “May Sarton has never been better than she is in this beautiful, harrowing novel about being old, unwanted, yet refusing to give up” (The Boston Globe). After seventy-six-year-old Caro Spencer suffers a heart attack, her family sends her to a private retirement home to wait out the rest of her days. Her memory growing fuzzy, Caro decides to keep a journal to document the daily goings-on—her feelings of confinement and boredom; her distrust of the home’s owner, Harriet Hatfield, and her daughter, Rose; her pity for the more incapacitated residents; her resentment of her brother, John, for leaving her alone. The journal entries describe not only her frustrations, but also small moments of beauty—found in a welcome visit from her minister, or in watching a bird in the garden. But as she writes, Caro grows increasingly sensitive to the casual atrocities of retirement-home life. Even as she acknowledges her mind is beginning to fail, she is determined to fight back against the injustices foisted upon the home’s occupants. This ebook features an extended biography of May Sarton.

Book excerpt: From Shakespeare to cop shows, sitcoms to docudramas, for over three decades the CBC has presented viewers with every variety of television drama and has become Canada's closest equivalent to a national theatre. Turn Up the Contrast is the first book to explore the content of Canadian television drama and is both a critical analysis and a survey history of how Canadians have used the medium to tell themselves their own stories. As a part of her research, Mary Jane Miller watched thousands of hours of television, sampling series and viewing in their entirety shorter programs such as movies and mini-series. Asking a variety of questions, she selected a number of programs for detailed analysis, and devotees of The Beachcombers, King of Kensington, Seeing Things, Cariboo Country, Wojeck or A Gift to Last will be pleased to find their favourites among those discussed at length. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Covering the daily lives of American soldiers from their training through their arrival in France and participation in the final battles of the war, this book offers a breadth of perspectives on the experiences of doughboys in the First World War via primary documents of the time. Due to the mechanical typewriter and the Linotype machine, printed materials during the World War I era were produced quickly and widely distributed. In a time without media other than those on paper, printed materials like newspapers, magazines, books, letters, and army orders were critical for communication. This book examines the range of documents written during World War I or within a few years of the end of the conflict to reveal the experiences of the doughboys who participated in "the war to end all wars." Through documents such as military communications, newspaper accounts, personal letters, divisional histories written soon after the end of hostilities, and other sources, readers get detailed glimpses into the doughboy experience during World War I. The book covers subject matter throughout their time as soldiers, including training in the United States and in France, early participation in conflicts, daily life in the American Expeditionary Force, the major battles for American troops, and what returning home was like for those lucky ones. The assembled narrative of the war experience from many different voices and individuals creates a resource that enables a better understanding the attitudes and perspectives from 1918 through the very early 1920s. Readers will also gain an appreciation of the many changes in American culture that were to follow immediately after the war's conclusion and contribute to the decade of the Roaring Twenties.

Book excerpt: Most of us settle. We live average, safe, mediocre lives. But does that kind of living reflect what God has called us to? The abundant life that Jesus promised his followers is nothing less than amazing when we realize that God is working in us so that we may “be conformed to the image of his Son” (Romans 8:29). Jesus did not live an ordinary life, and nor should we! Walk on Water invites believers to rise above the norm. This daily devotional takes a fresh look at the Word of God. Be inspired by the lives of Esther, Daniel, Jonah, and others. Be challenged with Jesus’ no-nonsense conversations with the Pharisees and the disciples. Be emboldened through the honest emotions that pour from the hearts of the writers of the Psalms. In addition to daily devotionals, twelve true stories (experienced by Deb herself) are added at the end of each month to encourage and humor the soul.
