Book Synopsis The History of Jefferson County, Iowa, Containing a History of the County, Its Cities, Towns, &C by : Western Historical Company
Download or read book The History of Jefferson County, Iowa, Containing a History of the County, Its Cities, Towns, &C written by Western Historical Company and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-30 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Jefferson County, Iowa, Containing a History of the County, Its Cities, Towns, &C: A Biographical Directory of Citizens, War Records of Its Volunteers in the Late Rebellion, General and Local Statistics, Portraits of Early Settlers and Prominent Men, History of the Northwest, History of Iowa, Map of Jefferson County, &C The struggles, changes and vicissitudes that forty-three years evoke, are as trying to the minds as to the bodies of men. Physical and mental strength waste away together beneath gath ering years, and the memory of names, dates and events become lost in the confusion engendered by time and its restless, unceasing mutations. Circumstances that were fresh in memory ten and twenty years after their occurrence, are almost, if not. Entirely, forgotten when fifty years have gone. If not entirely obliterated and e 'aced from memory's tablet, they are so nearly so that, when recalled by one seeking to preserve them, the recollections come slowly back, more like the memory of a midnight dream than of an actual occurrence, in which they were partial if not actual participants and prominent characters. The footprint of time leaves its impressions and destroying agencies upon everything, and hence it would be unreasonable to suppose that the annals, incidents and happenings of nearly half a century in a community like that whose history we have attempted to write, could be preserved intact and unbroken. The passage of three years marked the pages of time after the first settlements on Round Prairie before any records of a public nature, relating to what is now Jefferson County, were made, so that the gentlemen intrusted with the duty of writing this history were forced to depend upon the memory and intelligence of the few surviving pioneer settlers for a very large share of facts and information relating to immediate local events until after the organization of the county and the first meeting of the first Board of County Commissioners, at Lockridge, on the 8th day of April, 1830. And it is a subject of regret, that, even after that date, many important records are lost from the county archives, so that, in some instances, it. Has been impossible to supply certain names, dates, etc., from written data. For these reasons, it is not to be expected that this volume will be entirely accurate as to names, dates, etc., or that it will be so perfect as to be above and beyond criticism, for the book is yet to be written and printed that can justly claim the meed of perfection; but it is the pub lishers' hope, as it is their belief, that it will be found measurably correct and generally accurate and reliable. Industrious and studied care have been exercised to make it a standard book of reference, as well as one of interest to the general reader. If, in such a multiplicity of names, dates, etc., some errors are not detected. It will be strange indeed. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On Washington's Olympic Peninsula, at the entrance to Puget Sound, the Port Townsend of the 1850s was perfectly situated for sailing vessels. By 1880, thousands of ships from all over the world were passing through. Optimistic investors sought fortunes in shipping, logging, lumber mills, and land speculation. While commerce flourished at sea level, citizens built fine homes, churches, schools, clubs, a respectable shopping district, and parks uptown on the bluff. The settlers of this lovely seaport enjoyed rich cultural and social lives. Port Townsend went bust after the anticipated railroad failed to arrive. It remained largely frozen in time without economic motivation to tear down and replace its fine Victorian architecture. It wasn't until the 1970s that the beautiful setting and buildings were discovered by artists, hippies, preservationists, and, later, tourists and retirees. The town is now a thriving arts and cultural community, still beautiful, still small and remote.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book MEMORIES OF MOUNTAIN HOME SCHOOL is a personal journey by a former student, a labor of love. Part 1 traces the evolution of the school from a one-room, one-teacher school teaching grades one through eight to become a rural consolidated school teaching a fully accredited high school curriculum, to its sad decline and closure brought about by dramatic socio-economic changes that took place following WWII. The author draws from original sources to capture the role of the school in the lives of early settlers prior to Oklahoma statehood and during the years of rapid settlement and political turmoil following Oklahoma statehood through WWI. It describes dedicated work to continue upgrading the school during the economically static years of the 1920s and the years of brutal economic decline during the Great Depression, to form a fully accredited rural high school. After becoming fully accredited in 1941 Mountain Home School enjoyed its years of greatest achievements during the 1940s. Then decline brought about by rapidly declining population set in in the early 1950s leading to closure of the school in 1958. Part 2 is the personal memories contributed by 56 former Mountain Home School students. Their span the period from the early 1930s to the closure of the school in 1958. These wonderful personal memories convey the spirit and achievements of the school and the spirit and shared values of those who learned there.

Book Synopsis Memories of Union High by : Marion Woodfork Simmons
Download or read book Memories of Union High written by Marion Woodfork Simmons and published by . This book was released on 2011-11 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2012 National Indie Excellence Award - African American Non-Fiction Finalist In 1895, members of the Caroline County Sunday School Union implemented a plan to build and operate a secondary school for Negro children in Caroline County, Virginia. The school, originally named Bowling Green Industrial Academy, then Caroline County Training School and finally Union High School, served as the only secondary school for Negro children in the county from 1903 to 1969. Union High alumni speak fondly of their school. With church and home, it was an important institution in their community. The administration and faculty nurtured, supported, and encouraged the students. They held them to high standards and expected to them to excel. Parents and members of the community strove to support the school in every way possible. And the school served all members of the community, not just students. For many, Union High was an oasis that sheltered them from the hardships of growing up in a segregated society and provided them a solid foundation to become productive members of society. The last group of students graduated from Union High School on June 5, 1969. At the start of the 1969-1970 school year, both Black and White students attended the school, renamed Bowling Green Senior High School, when the Caroline County School system became integrated. Memories of Union High contains historical information, memories from alumni, faculty, family and friends, excerpts from school newspapers and yearbooks, over 100 photographs and other memorabilia. It is a fitting tribute to the people associated with Union High and a good history lesson for those who are not familiar with the school.

Book excerpt: In 1788, Adam and Elizabeth Peck followed the Holston River from Virginia into east Tennessee and settled in what would become Mossy Creek. Utilizing the waterway, the Pecks gristmill thrived within a growing community. The outbreak of the Civil War brought the Battle of Mossy Creek on December 29, 1863. During the next century, zinc mining, the establishment of Mossy Creek Missionary Baptist Seminary (now Carson-Newman University), and the towns inclusion as a stop on the new railroad ushered a steady flow of people to this picturesque region of promise. In 1901, Mossy Creek joined the Carsonville and Frame Addition communities to be incorporated as Jefferson City. The Tennessee Valley Authority began work in 1940 on nearby Cherokee Dam, generating both jobs and tourism.
