Download or read book The Imaginary: Word and Image written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-05-19 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The imaginary as a critical concept originated in the twentieth century and has been theorized in diverse ways. It can be understood as a register of thought; the way we interpret the world; the universe of images, signs, texts, and objects of thought. In this volume, it is explored as it manifests itself in encounters between the verbal and the visual. A number of the essays brought together here explore the transposition of the imaginary in illustrations of texts and verbal renditions of images, as well as in comic books based on paintings or on verbal narratives. Others analyze ways in which books deal with film or television and investigate the imaginary in digital media. Special attention is paid to the imaginary of places and the relationship of the imaginary with memory. Written in English and French, these contributions by European and American scholars demonstrate the various concerns and approaches characteristic of contemporary scholarship in word and image studies.

Book Synopsis Reflexive Translation Studies by : Silvia Kadiu
Download or read book Reflexive Translation Studies written by Silvia Kadiu and published by UCL Press. This book was released on 2019-04-08 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past decades, translation studies have increasingly focused on the ethical dimension of translational activity, with an emphasis on reflexivity to assert the role of the researcher in highlighting issues of visibility, creativity and ethics. In Reflexive Translation Studies, Silvia Kadiu investigates the viability of theories that seek to empower translation by making visible its transformative dimension; for example, by championing the visibility of the translating subject, the translator’s right to creativity, the supremacy of human translation or an autonomous study of translation. Inspired by Derrida’s deconstructive thinking, Kadiu presents practical ways of challenging theories that argue reflexivity is the only way of developing an ethical translation. She questions the capacity of reflexivity to counteract the power relations at play in translation (between minor and dominant languages, for example) and problematises affirmative claims about (self-)knowledge by using translation itself as a process of critical reflection. In exploring the interaction between form and content, Reflexive Translation Studies promotes the need for an experimental, multi-sensory and intuitive practice, which invites students, scholars and practitioners alike to engage with theory productively and creatively through translation.

Download or read book Gender and Displacement written by Natalie Edwards and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2009-10-02 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Home" is a contested notion in contemporary literary and cultural studies, as critics assess the impact of empire, independence, migration and globalization upon colonial and postcolonial subjects. This volume assembles articles on the representation of home specifically in women's autobiography, which is now one of the most exciting and productive fields of literary studies. The chapters analyze writing from diverse areas of the Francophone world, including North Africa, Sub-Saharan Africa, the Caribbean and Indo-China, in addition to focussing on works by immigrant writers in France. The volume investigates the importance and the nuances of the construction of "home" in narratives of female identity in different contexts. This timely book includes original analyses by a range of scholars and studies both established writers, such as Maryse Condé, Marguerite Duras and Marie Cardinal, and newer voices such as Fatou Diome, Faïza Guène and Hélène Grimaud. Gender and Displacement: The Representation of Home in Francophone Women's Autobiography thus brings new understandings to the connections between race, gender, colonization and migration in female identity in diverse spaces.

Book Synopsis Michaël Ferrier, Transnational Novelist: French Without Borders by : Akane Kawakami
Download or read book Michaël Ferrier, Transnational Novelist: French Without Borders written by Akane Kawakami and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2023-11-15 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Michaël Ferrier is a prize-winning novelist, essayist and academic whose cosmopolitan life – he grew up in Chad and France, has Mauritian roots and lives in Japan – has inspired him to write some fascinating novels that cross generic and geographical boundaries. This book is the first ever monograph dedicated to his works, which explore themes as various as an African childhood, notions of Frenchness, inter-identities, and post-Fukushima life in Japan. Hybridity is key to his themes, forms and genres, which include – as befits a twenty-first century author – a website, called ‘Tokyo-Time-Table’ and discussed in this study. Kawakami uses an eclectic range of frameworks to analyse Ferrier’s output, ranging from translingualism to Environmental Humanities and Ferrier’s own vision of his oeuvre, which he discloses for the first time in this book in the interview that he grants Kawakami. This interview, first published in this volume, is rich in insights into Ferrier’s views on dreams, Japan, the internet, and collaborating with other artists. This book is an indispensable guide to an author who is one of the rising stars of contemporary French and Francophone literature, and a unique voice that crosses all kinds of borders across the globe.
