Book excerpt: Dr.Seshagiri Rao's work "Jayantha Bhatta on Sabda Pramana" is an important work in the field of Indian Philosophy. Sabda as pramana is unique as the understanding of linguistic utterances gives us more knowledge about the world than pratyaksa (perception) and anumana (inference). Sabda, in its varying forms is one of the fundamental sources for the sorts of experience and understanding that fall specifically with in the domain of religious discourse. The ramifications are enormous when we consider that sabda constituted by sruti such as the upanisads and certain other text of vedas, forms the basis for the authentication and acceptance of some very fundamental beliefs and ideas that are considered to be central to Hindu tradition. However, given the preoccupatiopn of Indian philosophy towards metaphysics, epistemology and even ethics, the philosophy of language is not sufficiently explicated in the early stages of Nyaya philosophy. This gap is filled by Jayanta Bhatta. The intervention of Jayanta Bhatta offered the architecture of language in a systematic manner in Nyaya philosophy. ---------Prof. K.S Prasad Department of Philosophy University of Hyderabad

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Indian orthodox philosophical traditions, also known as the Astika schools, are deeply rooted in the Vedic scriptures and form the foundational pillars of classical Indian philosophy. These schools include Nyaya, Vaisheshika, Samkhya, Yoga, Purba Mimamsa, and Uttar Mimamsa or Vedanta, each offering a distinctive perspective on the fundamental questions of existence, knowledge, ethics, and the nature of reality. Grounded in the authority of the Vedas, these traditions have shaped the intellectual and cultural fabric of India for millennia, influencing not only philosophy but also other aspects of society, religion, and art. At the heart of Indian intellectual beliefs is a strong desire to understand the final nature of reality and how to reach spiritual awareness or freedom. They talk about questions about life, knowledge, ethics, and the nature of the self. They give us structures and points of view to help us make sense of the complicated things that happen to us.

This book is an attempt to give a complete account of the Nyëya theory of knowledge in comparison with the rival theories of other systems, Indian and Western, and critical estimation of its worth. Though theories of knowledge of the Vedënta and other schools have been partially studied in this way by some, there has as yet been no such systematic, critical and comparative treatment of the Nyëya epistemology, The importance of such a study of Indian realistic theories of knowledge can scarcely be overrated in this modern age of Realism.

Ganeri explores the philosophical projects of a number of major Indian philosophers and looks into the methods of rational inquiry deployed within these projects. In so doing, he illuminates a network of mutual reference, criticism, influence and response, in which reason is used to call itself into question. This fresh perspective on classical Indian thought unravels new philosophical paradigms, and points towards new applications for the concept of reason.

The conceptions of these different kinds of knowledge, with all the arguments given by the Vedantins to prove their independence and ultimacy, are critically discussed here in the light of modern Western concepts, and the attempt has been made to present the conclusions to students of Western Philosophy in a clear and lucid form. As the purpose of this work is to bring the problems, concepts and theories of the Vedantins within the focus of modern Western thought, the method adopted is one of critical analysis, comparison issues from extraneous aspects with which they are often associated.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, of numerous references, is an encyclopedia of logic, metaphysics, ethics and theology and represents the history of Indian Philosophy of a particular period. A popular saying credits the author, Jayanta, with the reputation of being a master-scholar of Indian logic. No study of Indian logic can be considered to be complete without having recourse to this work. The main task of the author in this book is to defend the views of Vatsyayana as expressed in his Nyaya-bhasya on the sutras of Gautama against the criticisms offered by the adversaries. He has criticised the views not only of the Buddhists but also of the Grammarian bhartrhari and the Mimamsakas-Kumarila and Prabhakara. his condemnation of the Prabhakaras as the plagiarists who borrowed from the Buddhist show his intimate knowledge both of the Buddhists and the mimamsa ka schools. In his lengthy discussion on the pramanas in this volume, he has refuted the hypothesis of the Bhattas and the prabhakaras. Thus the book provides knowledge not only of the details of the Nyaya School but also of the systems of logic followed by the rival schools.

Book excerpt: When we understand that something is a pot, is it because of one property that all pots share? This seems unlikely, but without this common essence, it is difficult to see how we could teach someone to use the word "pot" or to see something as a pot. The Buddhist apoha theory tries to resolve this dilemma, first, by rejecting properties such as "potness" and, then, by claiming that the element uniting all pots is their very difference from all non-pots. In other words, when we seek out a pot, we select an object that is not a non-pot, and we repeat this practice with all other items and expressions. Writing from the vantage points of history, philosophy, and cognitive science, the contributors to this volume clarify the nominalist apoha theory and explore the relationship between apoha and the scientific study of human cognition. They engage throughout in a lively debate over the theory's legitimacy. Classical Indian philosophers challenged the apoha theory's legitimacy, believing instead in the existence of enduring essences. Seeking to settle this controversy, essays explore whether apoha offers new and workable solutions to problems in the scientific study of human cognition. They show that the work of generations of Indian philosophers can add much toward the resolution of persistent conundrums in analytic philosophy and cognitive science.
