Book excerpt: The Barcelona artist Jaume Plensa is best-known for his spectacular Crown Fountain in Millennium Park, Chicago. Constructed between 1999 and 2004 with support from the Crown Foundation, this work features water cascading down two monumental towers, as well as video and lighting effects. Alternating images recorded on video by Plensa show the faces of 1,000 Chicagoans from all segments of society. Every 12 minutes these faces transform into gargoyles reminiscent of traditional fountains. Plensa's Crown Fountain, which swiftly became a popular public attraction, is comprehensively presented in this monograph, along with an extensive chronology of his multi-faceted oeuvre.

Book excerpt: Partenheimer?s abstract works are characterised by their variable, multidimensional language of forms, lightness of touch, striking use of colour and poetic approach. Partenheimer uses reduction, asymmetry and imperfection in his work to propose alternative modes of perception. These are partly the result of the artist?s engagement with and contribution to a broader theoretical discourse. In his paintings forms circulate around an undefined space ? a 'nothingness' ? and seem to have the potential to dissolve and reform at any moment. This open- ended quality is evident in all the works in this exhibition.00Exhibition: White Cube Gallery Bermondsey, London, UK (28 .04.? 18.06.2017).

Book excerpt: A phenomenon in contemporary art, Flemish artist Berlinde De Bruyckere creates dynamic, often unsettling works that straddle the line between real and metaphorical bodies. In dialogue here with earlier works by Cranach the Elder and controversial poet and filmmaker Pier Paolo Pasolini, De Bruyckere's sculptures in wool, wood, wax, and hair reveal a sense of loneliness and physical vulnerability and explore issues surrounding the corporeality of man--issues more relevant than ever in an age when science is increasingly capable of mimicking nature. Created in partnership with the Stiftung Moritzburg in Halle--and accompanying exhibitions at the Bern Kunstmuseum and Vienna Kunsthalle--this catalogue includes illustrations of artworks by De Bruyckere, Cranach and Pasolini, as well as an essay by the philosopher Gernot Böhme setting the works of art in the context of German philosophy and current ethical issues.

Book excerpt: A provocative, challenging masterpiece by John Ashbery that set a new standard for the modern prose poem “The pathos and liveliness of ordinary human communication is poetry to me,” John Ashbery has said of this controversial work, a collection of three long prose poems originally published in 1972, adding, “Three Poems tries to stay close to the way we talk and think without expecting what we say to be recorded or remembered.” The effect of these prose poems is at once deeply familiar and startlingly new, something like encountering a collage made of lines clipped from every page of a beloved book—or, as Ashbery has also said of this work, like flipping through television channels and hearing an unwritten, unscriptable story told through unexpected combinations of voices, settings, and scenes. In Three Poems, Ashbery reframes prose poetry as an experience that invites the reader in through an infinite multitude of doorways, and reveals a common language made uncommonly real.

Book excerpt: In 2009, William Kentridge and Gerhard Marx were commissioned to make a public sculpture for the City of Johannesburg to be installed in time for the 2010 Soccer World Cup. The sculpture is based on a drawing by Kentridge of a woman street vendor - known colloquially as a fire walker - carrying a burning brazier on her head. The eleven-metre-high striding figure would take her place at the foot of the Queen Elizabeth Bridge on a site formerly used by informal traders and taxi washers. Eschewing the bronze monumentalism of traditional public sculpture, Kentridge and Marx devised a figure made up of steel plates that resolves into a coherent image from one vantage point only. A pedestrian passing the sculpture has only a momentary view of the striding woman before the sculpture 'fragments' into its black and white parts. Fire Walker represents not a grand public office-bearer, but an ordinary citizen whose survival depends on her ability to negotiate often-contested urban terrain. This book began as a project to document the making of Fire Walker, but it evolved into a number of conversations about - and meditations on - the meaning of public art. Essays by Mark Gevisser, Mpho Matsipa, Alexandra Dodd, and Jonathan Cane and Zen Marie prise open critical questions about public space in Johannesburg; interviews with the various collaborators on the sculpture reveal the complexities and challenges of creating such a work; and the extraordinary images of the construction of the sculpture, alongside two photo essays on street vendors and old city monuments, suggest the metaphorical power of Fire Walker as well as the fragile hold of street vendors over their small share of city space."--Publisher's description.

Book excerpt: "Cleveland Center for Contemporary Art has taken this opportunity to explore the language of exhibitions by examining the historical trajectory of performance art, producing new and existing live performances, and aligning that material with the possibilities of an interactive, installation-based, and documentary-style exhibition. Outside the Frame is a highly selective exhibition, designed to touch on many different forms of performance and to raise critical questions concerning the interrelationship between performance art and all other art forms."--Foreword
