Book excerpt: Daniel Jarrell (1745?-1804) probably the son of James and Elizabeth Jarrell, married Mary Terry, ca. 1770. They settled in the part of Culpeper County, Virginia, that later became Madison County, Virginia. They had at least ten children, 1773-1795. Their great grandson, John Chapman Jarrell (1857-1926), was born in Boone County, West Virginia, the son of Sarah (Sally) Jarrell. He married Elmira Lake (1867-1938) in 1991. They had eleven children, 1882-1907, born in West Virginia. In 1907, John killed a son-in-law, Tom Mack, after a five year feud. John, with a daughter and son-in-law, fled to an Indian reservation in Oklahoma, where they were allowed to stay because they were part Indian. Elmira raised her her children alone for several years, and then sold the farm and moved to Hazel Valley, Arkansas. Her husband, daughter and son-in-law rejoined the family there. Descendants listed lived in Arkansas, Oregon, California, and elsewhere.

Book excerpt: Bishop's "History of Roane County" is the standard work on its subject, but its chief appeal to the genealogist can be found in the hundreds of genealogical and historical essays of pioneer families of Roane County that comprise the second half of the work. Those essays, which, in most cases, are based upon interviews conducted by the author with a surviving family member, generally go back to the early nineteenth century and pertain to migrants from Virginia and the middle states possessing British, Irish, or Scotch-Irish stock.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines ‘Southern Gothic’ - a term that describes some of the finest works of the American Imagination. But what do ‘Southern’ and ‘Gothic’ mean, and how are they related? Traditionally seen as drawing on the tragedy of slavery and loss, ‘Southern Gothic’ is now a richer, more complex subject. Thirty-five distinguished scholars explore the Southern Gothic, under the categories of Poe and his Legacy; Space and Place; Race; Gender and Sexuality; and Monsters and Voodoo. The essays examine slavery and the laws that supported it, and stories of slaves who rebelled and those who escaped. Also present are the often-neglected issues of the Native American presence in the South, socioeconomic class, the distinctions among the several regions of the South, same-sex relationships, and norms of gendered behaviour. This handbook covers not only iconic figures of Southern literature but also other less well-known writers, and examines gothic imagery in film and in contemporary television programmes such as True Blood and True Detective.

Book excerpt: Most families have much in common, but still each one is unique. Our family can't brag that our ancestors came over on the Mayflower. Instead, they came much later, via Ellis Island and Philadelphia. Three of my husband Jerry's grandparents, and one of mine, were born in Europe. Through the short stories and the photographs in this book, "Family Ties," I hope to share the families we knew and the lessons we learned from them.

Book excerpt: From his birth in Owensboro, Kentucky, in 1947, to his 2020 album featuring the music of Lee Hammons, Wayne Howard has lived an exceptionally creative life. He seemed to be eternally present at fiddle festivals, involved in the creative forces working to preserve Southern Mountain music. In 1969, he relocated to West Virginia and was introduced to the Hammons family by Dwight Diller. Howard then recorded Lee, Sherman, Burl, and Maggie Hammons playing music and telling stories. Howard then became a professional computer programmer, a vintage book collector, and a woodworker, before turning to writing about the Hammons family, and producing CDs of their stories and music. This biography follows the threads of music and folklore through Howard's life, celebrating his profound knowledge that does much to sustain the interest of those who seek out Appalachian tunes, songs, and stories.
