Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few nations rely upon the ocean as much as Japan for livelihood, culture and transport. The seas have long played a vital role for the Japanese, helping to support the economic and social life of a nation that possesses few resources and little arable land, and sustain a population that has nearly tripled in the last century. Fish are a distinctive feature of the Japanese diet, constituting nearly half of all animal protein consumed – the highest rate in the world. The industry itself has provided an impetus for coastal community growth and national economic development over the past century, while fisheries have worked their way into Japanese culture and customs, serving as a dominant symbol in traditional arts and folklore. This book explores the overarching rationale that motivated Japanese international fisheries policy throughout the post-war period until today, highlighting the importance of international fisheries to Japan and the stature this resource has occupied as a national interest. It provides a comparative view of Japanese foreign policy at various ocean conferences, treaty negotiations, bilateral diplomatic initiatives and other maritime relations that constitute ocean policy over half a century, and investigates the domestic constituents of national policy. Roger Smith argues that the rationale for international fisheries policy may be best viewed as deriving from Japan’s unique defence strategy for its national interests: comprehensive security. Encompassing non-military elements and most importantly defence of economic interests, Japan’s international fisheries policy provides an interesting case study of how comprehensive security is conceptualised and carried out. Taking a broad view of Japan’s international fisheries policies from 1945 to the present, this book highlights the key trends in policy motives and means throughout the post-war period. As such, it will be of great interest to students and scholars of Japanese studies, international and environmental law, resource management and international relations, as well as to policy makers working in the field.

Book Synopsis Japan's Food Demand and 1985 Grain Import Prospects (Classic Reprint) by : Joseph R. Barse
Download or read book Japan's Food Demand and 1985 Grain Import Prospects (Classic Reprint) written by Joseph R. Barse and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-09-19 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Japan's Food Demand and 1985 Grain Import Prospects The demand for imports in individual countries is greatly influenced by national policies adopted to deal with domestic problems of production and consumption. This is particularly evident in Japan, a major developed market and a growing outlet for agricultural exports of less developed countries. This report is an in-depth study of the role of national development policies in Japan and specifically analyzes the impact of these policies on grain imports both historically and into the future. The effect of alternative policies (food strategies) relating to production, consumption, and imports of grain to meet the growing meat and grain requirements in a rapidly growing economy is analyzed in detail. The need to satisfy a growing consumer demand for meats and meat products forced Japan to emphasize domestic livestock production, and thus imports of feed grains. This demand is in addition to the food grain requirements which must be met concurrently in a rapidly growing society. Book excerpt: The net social cost of Japan's 1985/86 production goals for eight major food items is calculated under the assumption that these goals existed in 1975/76. based on the Corden model and actual 1975/76 production and consumption levels, it is estimated that the actual social cost of producing the eight commodities in 1975/76 was $387 million. had the 1985/86 production goals been in effect, the net social cost in 1975/76 would have been nearly $8 billion.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1982, the editors and authors of this book examine the United States’ 1973 embargo on the export of soybeans and its effects on U.S.-Japanese relations. Although eventually shipment of soybeans to Japan resumed, the embargo temporarily soured the friendly relations of the two democracies. This book, prepared by a group of Japanese and U.S. scholars, demonstrates how trade relations between the two countries are affected by their internal political situations and by the nature of their respective agricultural industries. U.S.-Japanese Agricultural Trade Relations will be valuable to scholars, policy makers, and others interested in agricultural trade. It should be particularly useful in courses on international trade and on agricultural policy.

Book excerpt: The services economy is on the rise all around the world, and services now comprise the largest share of economic activity and employment in almost every country. This book presents the latest evidence demonstrating how technologies and globalization have transformed the services industry. Services are becoming increasingly tradable under World Trade Organization rules and regional trade agreements, and some services subsectors are also seeing rates of productivity growth comparable to that in manufacturing. At the same time, services are increasingly contributing to manufacturing success, and countries’ overall economic competitiveness now hinges crucially on the availability of high-quality and affordable services inputs. Furthermore, a well-functioning services sector can accelerate human development through better access to basic needs, such as education, energy, finance, health, water, and sanitation. Services can also be a source of good jobs with fewer negative environmental and social externalities. Overall, the ongoing structural transformation toward a services economy is a unique opportunity to achieve long-term income growth, which in turn promotes sustainable development. This book offers suggestions on how to achieve this, and is thus an indispensable read for researchers and policy makers alike.
Download or read book Japan's Economic Aid written by Alan Rix and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-11-01 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Japan’s arrival since World War Two as a major industrial nation has meant that she has had to bear a greater share of the developed world’s contribution to the developing nations and foreign aid has become an integral part of foreign policy. This book describes the roots of Japan’s aid policy and shows that this side of her international economic policy is based largely on domestic conditions, structures and forces. To understand the pattern of Japanese aid as it stands today, it is important to appreciate the complexities of the Japanese decision-making process. This book clearly explains the patterns of Japanese aid policy-making.

Book Synopsis Food Security In The United States by : William B. Lacey
Download or read book Food Security In The United States written by William B. Lacey and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2021-01-07 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the fact that every year it produces a larger surplus of agricultural products than any other country in the world, the U.S. still must contend with a number of important but often unaddressed issues related to food security, including problems of soil erosion, water supply, energy availability, nutrition; farm worker health and safety, and product distribution. This book; containing contributions from authorities in both the natural and social sciences, expands the range of issues pertinent to the security of the U.S. food system, taking into account the adequacy and sustainability of the food supply, equity in access to food by the entire population, the nutritional quality of food, and the costs and benefits (social, economic, and health) of the food system as it is presently organized. Each of the authors considers an aspect of U.S. food security from the point of view of a specific discipline, as well as in terms of broader policy implications.
