Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: President Nixon’s new economic policy of August 1971, aggravated by the oil problem since October 1973 caused chaos and uncertainty in the international trade and currency system. There were fears of another 1930s style depression. In addition, a world food shortage and strident claims by developing countries for perpetual sovereignty over resources added another set of difficulties. This volume, written from Japan’s standpoint, suggests a new direction for the world and regional economic order. The book tackles two major issues in international economics: Firstly, traditional international trade theory aims only at static maximization in the use of world human and material resources, but, the author stresses more attention should be paid to such dynamic or developmental elements as population growth, immigration, natural resource development, improvement in transfer of technology, economies of scale, direct foreign investment and economic integration in order to create development centres or sectors in the world economy. Secondly, the author discusses how to combine a global and regional approach to economic integration.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Japan's remarkable penetration into foreign markets in industries ranging from automobiles to semiconductors has fueled great interest in Japanese foreign investment. Japan now exerts tremendous influence over the international economy. Backed by statistics and theory, this definitive work examines Japanese direct foreign investments around the world and across various industries since World War II. It explores Japan's overseas acquisitions in all corners of the globe, the internationalization of its financial services industry and the roots of its foreign investment including the rebuilding of its economy after World War II and its success in technological domination of key industries. The study begins with a general theoretical and historical overview of Japanese overseas investment. It then focuses on individual regions and countries in the world including the United States, Canada, Latin America, Europe, Africa, Asia, and the Pacific Ocean region. Particular attention is addressed to the United States and Southeast Asia, the areas where most of Japan's overseas investments are concentrated. This work will be of interest to economists, businessmen, historians, scholars, and students of international business or economics. Businessmen and economists will find this book especially valuable with its leads on Japanese economic and corporate success.

Book Synopsis A World of Regions by : Peter J. Katzenstein
Download or read book A World of Regions written by Peter J. Katzenstein and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2015-05-01 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Observing the dramatic shift in world politics since the end of the Cold War, Peter J. Katzenstein argues that regions have become critical to contemporary world politics. This view is in stark contrast to those who focus on the purportedly stubborn persistence of the nation-state or the inevitable march of globalization. In detailed studies of technology and foreign investment, domestic and international security, and cultural diplomacy and popular culture, Katzenstein examines the changing regional dynamics of Europe and Asia, which are linked to the United States through Germany and Japan. Regions, Katzenstein contends, are interacting closely with an American imperium that combines territorial and non-territorial powers. Katzenstein argues that globalization and internationalization create open or porous regions. Regions may provide solutions to the contradictions between states and markets, security and insecurity, nationalism and cosmopolitanism. Embedded in the American imperium, regions are now central to world politics.
