Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Japan’s Future in East Asia and the Pacific takes a ’big-picture‘ approach to Japan’s economic place in East Asia alongside that of China. It analyses Japan’s successes and experiments in trade policy as well as its failures in macro-economic policy. Japan’s diplomatic and economic integration strategies are also examined for their impact on East Asia and on Australia. The collection assesses China’s growth and dynamism and questions the nature of the competition for economic influence between Japan and China. Contributors to Japan’s Future in East Asia and the Pacific are all graduates of The Australian National University who are making their mark in the region as scholars and economists on East Asian and Pacific affairs.

This book was released on 2000-05-04 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Facing Asia examines the political and economic processes of regionalism and regionalization in Asia with a focus on Japan and Japanese actors. The articles by eminent scholars address the forces that tie the region together. They treat topics ranging from Japanese bilateral and multilateral ODA and the activities of state and non-state actors on the regional level to issues such as Japanese multinational corporations, foreign direct investment in Asia, and regional financial institutions. Methodologically, the authors draw on disciplinary strengths in either the social sciences or economics while organizing their treatment around a shared political-economic perspective. By looking at Asia through an interdisciplinary lens, the volume offers something to anyone interested in Japanese involvement in the politics and economics of the region. In the final chapter, the editors weave together the different approaches to Japan's place in Asian regional cooperation in the 1990s and beyond.

Download or read book Asia Pacific Fusion written by Yōichi Funabashi and published by Peterson Institute for International Economics. This book was released on 1995 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Japanese journalist Yoichi Funabashi has written the first in-depth study of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum based on extensive interviews with heads of state and government officials in the region. A key force behind APEC, he argues, is a potential "fusion" of Asia-Pacific civilizations propelled by the region s dynamic economic integration. He recounts APEC s six-year history, assesses its potential, and examines the power politics of the region. Released just before the Osaka summit hosted by Japan in November 1995, this book looks closely at Japan's interests in APEC and its relations with countries in the region. It provides an intellectual framework for the future evolution of APEC itself and for Japan's role in that institution.
Book Synopsis The Article II Mandate by : Matthew P. Goodman
Download or read book The Article II Mandate written by Matthew P. Goodman and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2019-01-04 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To explore opportunities for greater economic cooperation between the United States and Japan in third countries, the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) in Washington and the Asia Pacific Initiative (API) in Tokyo embarked on a joint research project using a case-study approach to examine four countries (Myanmar, Vietnam, India, and South Korea) and two institutional arrangements (regional trade architecture and the G7) where the United States and Japan have aligned interests. We found that shared interests and goals of the United States and Japan transcend today’s bilateral trade tensions, and despite China’s growing influence and assertive behavior there nevertheless remains a strong demand in the region for U.S. and Japanese leadership. Washington and Tokyo should therefore work to better coordinate their economic engagement in the region.

Book excerpt: Redefining the Partnership examines the roles of the United States and Japan in East Asia's constantly changing political and economic environment. As the Cold War recedes further into the past, the United States and Japan have shifted interest to the other economically growing countries in East Asia. Scholars from both America and Japan propose solutions to the conflicts between the two countries in approach and explain the importance of a partnership to both countries. These proposals attempt to sort out the challenges of dealing with the military threats and political uncertainties of nations such as China and North Korea, while taking advantage of the economic development of the area. They express the importance of a stable relationship between the two countries for either to be successful, as well as the importance of dealing with problems like the United States trade deficit.

Download or read book Japan's New Regional Reality written by Saori N. Katada and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2020-07-07 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the mid-1990s, Japan’s regional economic strategy has transformed. Once characterized by bilateralism, informality, and neomercantilism, Japanese policy has shifted to a new liberal strategy emphasizing regional institution building and rule setting. As two major global powers, China and the United States, wrestle over economic advantages, Japan currently occupies a pivotal position capable of tipping the geoeconomic balance in the region. Japan’s New Regional Reality offers a comprehensive analysis of Japan’s geoeconomic strategy that reveals the country’s role in shaping regional economic order in the Asia-Pacific. Saori N. Katada explains Japanese foreign economic policy in light of both international and domestic dynamics. She points out the hurdles to implementing a state-led liberal strategy, detailing how domestic political and institutional changes have been much slower and stickier than the changing regional economics. Katada highlights state-market relations and shows how big businesses have responded to the country’s interventionist policies. The book covers a wide range of economic issues including trade, investment, finance, currency, and foreign aid. Japan’s New Regional Reality is a meticulously researched study of the dynamics that have contributed to economic and political realities in the Asia-Pacific today, with significant implications for future regional trends.
