Book excerpt: "In 1930 the Toledo Museum of Art organized a landmark exhibition of "modern Japanese prints." Featuring the work of ten artists, including Hashiguchi Goyō, Kawase Hasui, and Hiroshi Yoshida, it has stood as a watershed in the success of the shin hanga ("new prints") movement that revived traditional Japanese woodblock prints for a new era. The exhibition's small, limited-edition catalogue (now long since out of print), with its invaluable descriptions and thumbnail black-and-white images, has likewise been considered a shin hanga "bible" for scholars and collectors. Fresh Impressions: Early Modern Japanese Prints, published to complement the exhibition of the same title at the Toledo Museum of Art (October 4, 2013--January 1, 2014), reproduces and re-examines all 343 prints from the original 1930 exhibition catalogue. It features retranslated and updated information about each print and essays by four distinguished authors who explore the context and importance of the 1930 Toledo exhibition, the key players who brought it about, and shin hanga's continuing legacy"--Publisher's website.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Impressions of Japan The object I have had in view in writing these pages has been not merely to give a description of my journeys through Japan, but to put on record some impressions of the development of the Japanese. The changes which that country has undergone during the last decade have been so rapid and radical, that it would have been impossible within the limits of a single volume to give any adequate idea of their number or nature, for many of the topics touched on would require a volume to themselves. The greatest change of all seemed to have taken place in the country's Art, which twenty years ago was its chief and most distinguishing glory; and I have tried to show the reasons for that deterioration. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The best book on Japanese architecture ever produced by a Westerner." --The American Architect Japanese architecture is undoubtedly less well known and less appreciated than the architecture of any other civilized nation. Not only this, but it is almost universally misjudged, and while the world has by degrees come to know and admire the pictorial and industrial arts of Japan, her architecture, which is the rot and vehicle of all other modes of art, is passed over with a casual reference to its fantastic quality or a patronizing tribute to the excellence of some of its carved decoration. Written at a time when Japanese art was only beginning to be appreciated in the West, Impressions of Japanese Architecture conveys a sense of discovery and enthusiasm that modern readers will find as interesting and infectious as the book's first readers did. Long considered a classic, this new edition contains a foreword by acclaimed contemporary architect and author, Mira Locher. Originally published about one hundred years ago, Impressions of Japanese Architecture is still of immense value to anyone wishing for a better understanding of Japanese architecture, art and culture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ukiyo-e (‘pictures of the floating world’) is a branch of Japanese art which originated during the period of prosperity in Edo (1615-1868). Characteristic of this period, the prints are the collective work of an artist, an engraver, and a printer. Created on account of their low cost thanks to the progression of the technique, they represent daily life, women, actors of kabuki theatre, or even sumo wrestlers. Landscape would also later establish itself as a favourite subject. Moronobu, the founder, Shunsho, Utamaro, Hokusai, and even Hiroshige are the most widely-celebrated artists of the movement. In 1868, Japan opened up to the West. The masterful technique, the delicacy of the works, and their graphic precision immediately seduced the West and influenced greats such as the Impressionists, Van Gogh, and Klimt. This is known as the period of ‘Japonisme’. Through a thematic analysis, Woldemar von Seidlitz and Dora Amsden implicitly underline the immense influence which this movement had on the entire artistic scene of the West. These magnificent prints represent the evolution of the feminine ideal, the place of the Gods, and the importance accorded to landscape, and are also an invaluable witness to a society now long gone.
