Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Power and Privilege seeks to answer the central question of the field of social stratification: Who gets what and why? Using a dialectical view of the development of thought in the discipline, Gerhard Lenski describes the outlines of an emerging synthesis of theories. He shows that perspectives as diverse and contradictory as those of Marx, Spencer, Sumner, Veblen, Mosca, Pareto, Sorokin, Parsons, and Dahrendorf are parts of an evolving and systematic body of theory.

Book Synopsis Social Structure and Mobility in Economic Development by : Seymour Lipset
Download or read book Social Structure and Mobility in Economic Development written by Seymour Lipset and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-04-27 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The foundation of this volume is the notion that the several processes of change constituting economic and social development are systematically interrelated. The essence of development is the appearance of rapid rates of increases in many different indices--output per capita, political participation, literacy and the like. These quantitative changes are, however, commonly accompanied by vast changes in the social structure--markets emerge, political bureaucracies arise, and new educational systems appear. Written by the leading authorities on the subject, this group of papers tackles the causes and consequences of social mobility. Each author brings his particular skills to bear on various aspects of the problem in studies of persons moving from rural to urban settings, from one kind of industry to another and from one prestige level to another. Several of the papers review the theoretical and methodological issues involved in comparative research on social mobility while others compare and contrast traditional and modern stratification systems. Various papers explore the economic, religious and psychological basis of social mobility, concluding with enquiry into the consequences of rapid mobility, especially in terms of the political stability of developing nations. Because social mobility is a central consideration in any study of economic and social change, every student of change will use this pioneering reference source as a text for all future research. Contributors include Otis Dudley Duncan, Harold L. Wilensky, Michael G. Smith, Bert F. Hoselitz, Wilbert E. Moore, Natalie Rogoff Rams°y, Gideon Sjoberg, Reinhard Bendix, Harry Crockett, David Matza, Lester Seligman, and Gino Germani. Neil J. Smelser is emeritus professor, Department of Sociology, University of California, Berkeley. Seymour Martin Lipset was professor of sociology and director of the Institute of International Studies at the University of California, Berkeley.
Book Synopsis Scholarship and Partisanship by : Reinhard Bendix
Download or read book Scholarship and Partisanship written by Reinhard Bendix and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2023-04-28 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today, Max Weber appears to many younger academic rebels as the patron sait of "value neutral" social science, yet he too engaged in a furious generational rebellion of his own, and in the end chose science as a vocation. These essays deal with Weber's substantive and methodological contribution and the relation of his life to his place in intellectual and political history. They examine the influences on Weber, as well as his similarities to and differences from Marx, Burckhardt, Nietzsche, Durkheim, and others. The authors also give attention to the ideological background of the modern attack upon the university, and to comparative study of values, authority, and legitimation. Bendix's Presidential Address to the 1970 meeting of the American Sociological Association is included. This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press's mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact. Drawing on a backlist dating to 1893, Voices Revived makes high-quality, peer-reviewed scholarship accessible once again using print-on-demand technology. This title was originally published in 1971.
Book Synopsis Embattled Reason by : Reinhard Bendix
Download or read book Embattled Reason written by Reinhard Bendix and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-02-18 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Embattled Reason constitutes an intellectual profile of one of America's preeminent sociologists. This collection of essays, published over the course of thirty years, embodies a series of intellectual choices in response to current concerns and to debates of the past, affording a coherent and unified view of Bendix's work as a whole. The articles are grouped under three headings. In "Conditions of Knowledge" the author is concerned with the value assumptions basic to the social sciences. Under "Theoretical Perspectives" the author presents the guiding considerations of his own work in a continuing dialogue with such thinkers as Tocqueville, Marx, Durkheim, and Weber. In the last section, "Studies of Modernization," Bendix takes up problems involved in an analysis of social change though a reexamination of evolutionist assumptions.
