Just before Mr. Bayard Taylor left New York to fill the honored position of Ameri can Minister at the Court of Berlin, the reviser of this, his work, enjoyed the pleasure of meeting him and chatting upon Japan, which country he had vis ited when a member of Commodore M. C. Perry's expedition in 1854. In re-editing Mr. Taylor's com pilation, which has so long enjoyed deserved popll larity, the object has been to maintain its character as an illustrated work of travel. Obsolete state ments have been eliminated. Fresh selected and original material has been added, with just enough of history to give the reader an intelligent idea of the causes and processes of the profound changes which have made Japan a new nation. The geo graphical and other proper names have been ex pressed according to the standard orthography and pronunciation of Tokio, the Imperial capital. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Present-Day Japan The letters which form the groundwork of what will be found in the following pages were not in the first instance intended for publication. The writer's apology for adding to the already large number of books on Japan is the frequently-made suggestion that they might prove to be not without interest to a wider circle than that for which they were originally intended, as reflecting the experience of a person arriving in Japan with no feeling but curiosity and gradually falling under the influence of its manifold charm through the sympathy brought by increasing familiarity. The contrast between first impressions and those received after some degree of such familiarity had been acquired has suggested to the writer that in the case of Japan - more, perhaps, than in that of most foreign countries - the pleasure of a visit depends greatly on a knowledge of the associations connected with what is seen; she is, moreover, convinced that the present achievements of the nation are best understood when considered in the light of its past and with reference to the ethical forces which acted upon it during the centuries of its seclusion. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Jaunt in Japan: Or Ninety Day's Leave in the Far East So many books dealing with Japan have already appeared that it is with considerable diffidence I venture to place these pages before the public. I am, however, somewhat encouraged to do so, knowing the difficulties we experienced in arriving at any definite decision on the dozen points of essential importance to travellers, which are generally unnoticed by most authors who have written about this interesting country. We had read all about Shoguns and Daimyos, Hara-Kari and Geishas; we had seen pictures of Fujiyama and Yokohama, and we had heard of the waterfalls and temples of Nikho; but we had never been informed, for instance, that the roads throughout the country are invariably execrable, or that the trains are always late and I overcrowded. Before setting out on our holiday, we had experienced a good deal of difficulty in the selection of our itinerary, and we could find nothing to help us in estimating the probable expenses of our trip. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Japan Our nearest neighbor across the Pacific has been reckoned among the foremost nations of the earth ever since, in the late war with China, she humiliated that vast but inert empire. Japan will have a voice in the future destiny of Asiatic countries, and in that of the islands of the Pacific. Our schoolbooks on geography and general history touch but lightly upon the Japanese Empire, and it is for the purpose of enabling children to obtain a correct idea of the people, and of the impulses leading to the rapid progress of the past quarter of a century, that "The Story of Japan" has been written. It was deemed essential to explain repeatedly the key to the history of Japan and to the reforms of our time, by noticing the overpowering influence of the samurai of old, who were and still are the makers of the nation. With a very few exceptions, the nobles of Japan have been wholly dependent upon their leading samurai, who, in turn, have been influenced by the ablest of their peers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Japan in Days of Yore, Vol. 1 HE breathing time afforded to the great barons of Japan by Hidetada's uneventful administration having passed, it depended entirely on the character of Iemitsu whether or not the form of central feudal government rendered possible by Hideyoshi 's conquests and actually established by Tokugawa Ieyasu should be perpetuated for any length of time. Had any deficiency of that invincibleness of spirit combined with practical sagacity, possessed in such an eminent degree by both Hideyoshi and Ieyasu, displayed itself in the character of Iemitsu, it would have borne with it a serious train of consequences. Never did the subsequent history of a nation depend more on the character of an individual than at that time. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Japan by the Japanese: A Survey by Its Highest Authorities It was with a knowledge of this need, and the impossibility of any foreigner to supply it, that I conceived the idea of in dacing the Japanese to do it themselves. I went to Japan for this purpose, and suggested to several of their leading men that they should undertake the production of an authoritative account of their country for the information of the outside world. The idea was taken up with enthusiasm, and at a gathering in Tokyo I was honoured by being requested to under take the collecting, editing, and arranging of the work. I men tion this because I feel that I owe the readers of this book some explanation as to why the name of a non-japanese appears in a book, which, as its very title makes clear, is written by the Japanese. The difficulties of collecting the materials for such a book were not small, and much time had to be spent in the work. The war and the necessary preparations for the war prevented some of the contributions arriving, and changes were made necessary in others. At best the book must be considered as a trial essay, to be improved and enlarged later. Nobody can be more aware of its omissions, its faults, than myself, to whom, indeed, to a certain extent many of them are due. But, as it stands, I venture to claim that it is a unique work of great interest. To have secured the record of a country's progress written by the men who are now guiding her destinies is no small thing, and in no other great country would it have been possible. Some of the statesmen who responded to my appeal for special contributions have selected their most important public utterances for inclusion in the book. This they have done because they felt that in these deliverances they had expressed their views on vital national questions so thoroughly that to write on them again would only entail repetition. And the faint echo which came back from the rocky hill-side bounding the Mission House garden on its eastern side answered, Eileen! Eileen! Over the hill-crest, on the steep sides of which, here and there, beeches, larches, pines, camphor trees, and maples grew, the last rays of the setting sun had streamed in a golden and crimson glory but a very short time before; for dusky twilight follows sunset very rapidly, and the stars in the Japanese sky creep out less stealthily than with us. In the company of a friend, I was discussing, in a lazy, listless sort of way, as we lay stretched at full length in the cool verandah of our comfortable bungalow at Yokohama, the current "gup" of the place, the badness of trade, the non-appearance of the French mail steamer "Volga," now nearly six days overdue, and the latest piece of scandal. "By Jove! how jolly and cool it must be on the top of Fuji this sort of weather. No mosquitoes there," I said, bringing down my hand with a ferocious slap upon my devoted head, with the intent of slaying two of the monsters, that were at that instant drinking deep of my heart's best blood. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Jinrikisha Days in Japan The aim of this small book is to present, in outline sketches only, something of the Japan of today, as it appeared to a tourist who was a foreign resident as well. No one person can see it all, nor comprehend it, as the jinrikisha speeds through city streets and country roads, nor do any two people enjoy just the same experiences or draw the same conclusions as to this remarkable people. The scientists, scholars, and specialists who have written so fully of Japan, have necessarily omitted many of those less important phases of life which yet leave the pleasantest impressions on less serious minds. The books of ten or twenty years ago hardly describe the country that a visitor now finds, and in another decade the present aspect will have greatly changed. Bewildered by its novelty and strangeness, too many tourists come and go with little knowledge of the Japan of the Japanese, and, beholding only the modernized seaports and the capital, miss the unique and distinctively national sights and experiences that lie close at hand.
