Book Synopsis The Political History of Modern Japan by : Kitaoka Shinichi
Download or read book The Political History of Modern Japan written by Kitaoka Shinichi and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-10-10 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spanning the 130-year period between the end of the Tokugawa Era and the end of the Cold War, this book introduces students to the formation, collapse, and rebirth of the modern Japanese state. It demonstrates how, faced with foreign threats, Japan developed a new governing structure to deal with these challenges and in turn gradually shaped its international environment. Had Japan been a self-sufficient power, like the United States, it is unlikely that external relations would have exercised such great control over the nation. And, if it were a smaller country, it may have been completely pressured from the outside and could not have influenced the global stage on its own. For better or worse therefore, this book argues, Japan was neither too large nor too small. Covering the major events, actors, and institutions of Japan’s modern history, the key themes discussed include: Building the Meiji state and Constitution. The establishment of Parliament. The First Sino-Japanese and Russo-Japanese Wars. Party Politics and International Cooperation. The Pacific War. Development of LDP politics. Changes in the international order and the end of the Cold War. This book, written by one of Japan's leading experts on Japan's political history, will be an essential resource for students of Japanese modern history and politics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Japan From the Japanese Government History, Vol. 7: Edited With Supplementary Chapters The present revised edition Of the History Of the Empire Of Japan (compiled, in 1893, for the Imperial Japanese Commission of the World's Columbian Exposition at Chicago, by Messrs. K. Takatsu, S. Mikami, M. Isoda, and others, and published in Tokyo by order Of the Department of Education) is not intended to supersede the original edition, the high qualities Of which are, on the contrary, recommended to all students Of Japanese history. That work admirably represents what might be termed the ortho dox View Of the national history, and is free alike from the uh scientific method Oi the more conservative historian, and from the superficial speculations Of the more radical, but not more scientific, student. Were the present editor to write an original work on Japanese history, however, he would, it is unnecessary to say, change the entire manner of presentation in order to make it accord with his own conception Of the subject-matter. In this revision, he has not changed the general order of the original work, but has merely corrected a few data which are Obviously out Of date, omitted those minor facts which may well be dispensed with, and made the general narrative somewhat smoother than it was. The fourth part is, however, the editor's own work. The primary aim in this division Of the volume has been to supply a popular and accurate account Of certain phases of the national progress that has taken place since the History Of the Empire was prepared a dozen years ago. The substance of chapter XVIII has appeared among the new chapters supplied by the editor to the new edition of Brinkley's (edit) Japan, (j. B. Millet CO Boston, and has been inserted here with the permission Of those publishers. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book Japan'S Postwar History written by Gary D Allinson and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-05-09 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 1997. This comprehensive survey of Japan's post-war history integrates analysis of political, economic, and social topics. It presents the rapid, complex and sometimes contradictory evolution of Japan in an enviably clear style and provides an unrivalled textbook for students seeking a balanced and accessible introduction to modern Japan. The outcome of nearly 30 years’ experience of teaching, researching, and writing Japanese history, Japan's Post-war History offers an analysis of political relationships, institutions and behaviour at local, national and international levels. Economic aspects of Japan's recent history receive equal attention and the dramatic changes that have taken place in the agricultural, manufacturing and service industries are examined within the context of Japan's role as an international trading power. Material standards of living, the behaviour of Japanese as consumers, and the gradual shift in the role of women are also investigated. Given the deep-seated continuities between pre- and post-war Japan, the book also examines in detail the thirteen years before 1945 which imparted many legacies that have profoundly influenced contemporary Japan.
