Book Synopsis Superpowers at Sea by : Richard W. Fieldhouse
Download or read book Superpowers at Sea written by Richard W. Fieldhouse and published by Stockholm International Peace Research Institute. This book was released on 1989 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The arms race at sea is a dangerous nuclear race which is causing growing international concern and must be brought under control. What are the hard facts about the situation? This book documents the realities of the competition - especially the nuclearization of naval forces - and dispels some of the myths surrounding the naval arms race. This incisive analysis of naval forces of the East and West concludes that, contrary to common perceptions, the US and its allies have a considerable military advantage over the Soviet Navy, a trend which is expected to continue for the foreseeable future. The authors describe in detail the widespread nuclearization of naval forces of all five nuclear navies, analyse the implications for security and arms control, and conclude with suggestions for possible arms control measures.
Download or read book Cold Warriors written by Roy R. Manstan and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2014-05-20 with total page 415 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the story of a technological war. There was no ambiguity behind the phrase mutually assured destruction?nuclear weapons and the means to deliver them had become a reality. The atomic bomb brought Japan to the USS Missouri for the formal surrender on September 2, 1945; a date that marked the end of World War Two. But this date also signaled the beginning of the Cold War as the Soviet Union emerged from the shadows. There was no shot heard round the world; no Fort Sumter; no Pearl Harbor; only the threat of a mushroom cloud far worse than what Japan experienced. The Cold War remained cold because all the players aggressively pursued a strategy of deterrence aimed at keeping the opponents finger off the trigger. The people on the front lines and behind the scenes?the Cold Warriors on both sides?would come from the civilians who created the technology and the military that would be entrusted with its use. When tensions escalated, it was the Navy and the silent service that played a critical role. In Cold Warriors, the author describes a Navy laboratory in New London, Connecticut, populated with pioneers in submarine and antisubmarine warfare technology. Their mandate was to take the intellectual risks that would keep this country one step ahead of the Soviet Union. But ideas alone would not win the Cold War. The scientists relied on teams of field engineers whose willingness to take on physical risk would convert theory into reality. One of these groups was simply known as the divers. Beginning in the 1950s, the U.S. Navy Underwater Sound Laboratory began sending a small number of its civilian staff?one or two each year?to train at one of the Navys diving schools. As the Laboratory in New London evolved into the Naval Undersea Warfare Center, Newport, Rhode Island, that small team became the Engineering and Diving Support Unit. For more than a half-century, the divers would travel the world?this book is their story.

Book Synopsis The Naval Arms Trade by : Ian Anthony
Download or read book The Naval Arms Trade written by Ian Anthony and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1990 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a sober appraisal of the world trade in naval weapon systems at a time when recent attacks on merchant shipping in the Persian Gulf have kept maritime security at the centre of global attention. At the same time India, outside the international non-proliferation regime, has become the first-ever customer for a nuclear attack submarine. In 1987-88, the most expensive and controversial arms sales were related to naval systems, and yet while regional navies are busy increasing their firepower, the traditional naval powers remain dependent on their sea-borne trade. In particular the book highlights critical areas in which trade in naval systems differs from the sale of land or air systems, and it discusses the implications of these differences.
Book Synopsis The Soviet Naval Threat To Europe by : Bruce W. Watson
Download or read book The Soviet Naval Threat To Europe written by Bruce W. Watson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-01-09 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1989. Given the events of 1987 and 1988-the death of Admiral Sergei G. Gorshkov, who had served as Commander-in-Chief of the Soviet Navy from 1956 to 1985 and was so influencial in the development of the current Soviet Navy, the Soviet policy of glasnost', the U .S.-Soviet arms negotiations, Secretary Mikhail Gorbachev's visit to Washington, President Ronald Reagan's visit to Moscow, and the treaty concerning intermediate-range nuclear weapons- a study of the Soviet naval threat to Europe is particularly timely. This study begins by examining Soviet military and naval strategy, which provides a view of how the Soviets intend to use their forces. Then the book explore Soviet naval capabilities and operations, because a full understanding of Soviet naval power provides an understanding of the isolation that Europeans often feel. In the fourth and fifth sections of the book we examine the threat to northern and southern Europe.
Book Synopsis North Korea's Military-Diplomatic Campaigns, 1966-2008 by : Narushige Michishita
Download or read book North Korea's Military-Diplomatic Campaigns, 1966-2008 written by Narushige Michishita and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2009-10-16 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines North Korea’s nuclear diplomacy over a long time period from the early 1960s, setting its dangerous brinkmanship in the wider context of North Korea’s military and diplomatic campaigns to achieve its political goals. It argues that the last four decades of military adventurism demonstrates Pyongyang’s consistent, calculated use of military tools to advance strategic objectives vis à vis its adversaries. It shows how recent behavior of the North Korean government is entirely consistent with its behavior over this longer period: the North Korean government’s conduct (rather than being haphazard or reactive) is rational – in the Clausewitzian sense of being ready to use force as an extension of diplomacy by other means. The book goes on to demonstrate that North Korea’s "calculated adventurism" has come full circle: what we are seeing now is a modified repetition of earlier events – such as the Pueblo incident of 1968 and the nuclear and missile diplomacy of the 1990s. Using extensive interviews in the United States and South Korea, including those with defected North Korean government officials, alongside newly declassified first-hand material from U.S., South Korean, and former Communist-bloc archives, the book argues that whilst North Korea’s military-diplomatic campaigns have intensified, its policy objectives have become more conservative and are aimed at regime survival, normalization of relations with the United States and Japan, and obtaining economic aid.
