Book Synopsis Insurance and Issues in Financial Soundness by : Nigel Davies
Download or read book Insurance and Issues in Financial Soundness written by Nigel Davies and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2003-07-01 with total page 45 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper explores insurance as a source of financial system vulnerability. It provides a brief overview of the insurance industry and reviews the risks it faces, as well as several recent failures of insurance companies that had systemic implications. Assimilation of banking-type activities by life insurers appears to be the key systemic vulnerability. Building on this experience and the experience gained under the FSAP, the paper proposes key indicators that should be compiled and used for surveillance of financial soundness of insurance companies and the insurance sector as a whole.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Possibly no group is more conscious of the challenges created by the increasing integration of markets for capital, labour, products and information than small, developing economies. Policy makers from these economies have sought a two-track response to this integration. One response lies in increasing lobbying efforts for these economies to be accorded special, or more equitable treatment in market integration discussions. The second response lies in improving the competitiveness of their economies. It is this second response that provides the subject matter for this book. It explores the challenges and opportunities associated increasing competitiveness in small, developing economies based on research conducted in the Caribbean. The topics covered indicate the breadth of activity that is required to enhance. competitiveness. At the macro-policy level, the book explores the key drivers of competitiveness, examines the role of exchange rate regimes and of government policy, considers the implications sovereignty, and assesses the extent to which competitiveness likely to be improved by attracting foreign direct investment. At the level of private-sector enterprise the book reports

Book Synopsis Morals and Markets by : Viviana A. Rotman Zelizer
Download or read book Morals and Markets written by Viviana A. Rotman Zelizer and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2017-08-08 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Life insurance—the promise of an insurer to pay a sum upon a person's death in exchange for a regular premium—is a bizarre enterprise. How can we monetize human life? Should we? What statistics do we use, what assumptions do we make, and what behavioral factors do we consider? First published in 1979, Morals and Markets Is a pathbreaking study exploring the development of life insurance in the United States. Viviana A. Rotman Zelizer combines economic history and a sociological perspective to advance a novel interpretation of the life insurance industry. The book pioneered a cultural approach to the analysis of morally controversial markets. Zelizer begins in the mid-nineteenth century with the rise of the life insurance industry, a contentious chapter in the history of American business. Life insurance was stigmatized at first, denounced in newspapers and condemned by religious leaders as an immoral and sacrilegious gamble on human life. Over time, the business became a widely praised arrangement to secure a family's future. How did life insurance overcome cultural barriers? As Zelizer shows, the evolution of the industry in the United States matched evolving attitudes toward death, money, family relations, property, and personal legacy.
Book Synopsis Jamaica Meltdown by : Wilberne Persaud
Download or read book Jamaica Meltdown written by Wilberne Persaud and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2006-07 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unwarranted optimism guided Jamaica's indigenous financial sector institutions. They converted cash to speculative investments. Driven more by egos than economics they built grand Head Offices-dubbed the 'edifice complex' by one of Jamaica's most successful businessmen. Some of their activities skirted legal lines. The Courts adjudged others outright fraud. This general attitude and euphoric behaviours always precede crash. Jamaica Meltdown explores Jamaica's financial sector crisis of the 1990s and its aftermath. A fully emancipated, indigenous financial sector combined with and fuelling release of the people's creative energies could have produced true economic development. Instead it was pushed into a tailspin and crashed. Rather than progress, retarded development ensued. The Jamaican economy and people now faced the tremendous cost of rebuilding confidence-paying down non-productive debt precisely when education, technology, and health initiatives for the intensified global economy warranted highest priority. Jamaica Meltdown is an earnest look at the history of this financial crisis from a vantage point internal to the unfolding reality by an author with a strong grasp of finance theory.

This book was released on 2018-12-03 with total page 87 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The macroeconomic environment has improved, reflecting the authorities’ efforts, supported by an IMF arrangement. Previously, years of high fiscal deficits, public enterprise borrowing, and financial sector bailouts led to rapid government debt accumulation, crowded out private credit, increased financial dollarization, and stifled economic growth. Fiscal discipline has been essential to reduce public debt (to about 100 percent of GDP). With government debt accounting for a sizable share of financial institutions’ assets, falling interest rates on government debt are leading to a search for yield. Also, entrenched structural obstacles, including high crime, bureaucratic processes, insufficient labor force skills, and poor access to finance still constrain economic growth. The authorities have made good progress in implementing the 2006 FSAP recommendations. Work on the regulatory framework has significantly advanced in several areas such as securities dealers’ activities, powers to the Bank of Jamaica (BoJ), payment systems, and the introduction of the centralized securities depository. However, the crisis management framework and risk-based supervision work has been lagging.

Book excerpt: This paper discusses key findings of the Financial System Stability Assessment on the Basel Core Principles for Effective Banking Supervision, the Committee for Payment and Settlement Systems (CPSS) Core Principles for Systemically Important Payment Systems, and IMF Monetary and Financial Policy Transparency Codes for Jamaica. The assessment reveals that, although the financial system currently appears well capitalized and supervision has been considerably strengthened in recent years, financial institutions operate in a risky macroeconomic environment. Structural priorities are to improve the insolvency and creditor rights regime and introduce a central securities depository for fixed-income securities.
