This book was released on 2019-03-04 with total page 609 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis Democratic Extremism in Theory and Practice by : Paul Lucardie
Download or read book Democratic Extremism in Theory and Practice written by Paul Lucardie and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-12-04 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Democracy and extremism are usually considered as opposites. We assume that our system (in the UK, the USA, the Netherlands etc.) is democratic, and extremists try to destroy our system and introduce some kind of dictatorship, if not chaos and anarchy. Yet in many cases, the extremists seem sincere in their attempt to construct a more democratic polity. Hence, they can be called democrats and yet also extremists, in so far as they strive for a regime with characteristics that are more extreme in a significant sense. This book analyses radical and extreme democratic theories and ideas in their historical context, interlocked with critical descriptions of historical institutions and experiments that help to evaluate the theories. Cases range from ancient Athens to recent experiments with citizen juries and citizen assemblies, from the time-honoured Swiss Landsgemeinde to contemporary (and controversial) workers’ councils in Venezuela and participatory budgeting in Porto Alegre. Among the theorists discussed here are familiar names as well as relatively unknown persons: Jean-Jacques Rousseau and Karl Marx, Murray Bookchin and John Burnheim, William Godwin and Barbara Goodwin, Anton Pannekoek and Heinz Dieterich. Whereas the extreme ideas do not seem to work very well in practice, they do indicate ways by which we could make existing political systems more democratic. This book will be of interest to students of Politics and Current Affairs, as well as inspiration to political activists and reformists.
Book Synopsis Representing Algerian Women by : Edward John Still
Download or read book Representing Algerian Women written by Edward John Still and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2019-01-14 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph explores the ways in which canonical Francophone Algerian authors, writing in the late-colonial period (1945–1962), namely Kateb Yacine, Mohammed Dib, Mouloud Feraoun, Mouloud Mammeri and Assia Djebar, approached the representation of Algerian women through literature. The book initially argues that a masculine domination of public fields of representation in Algeria contributed to a postcolonial marginalization of women as public agents. However, it crucially also argues that the canonical writers of the period, who were mostly male, both textually acknowledged their inability to articulate the experiences and subjectivity of the feminine Other and deployed a remarkable variety of formal and conceptual innovations in producing evocations of Algerian femininity that subvert the structural imbalance of masculine symbolic hegemony. Though it does not shy from investigating those aspects of its corpus that produce ideologically conditioned masculinist representations, the book chiefly seeks to articulate a shared reluctance concerning representativity, a pessimism regarding the revolution's capacity to deliver change for women, and an omnipresent subversion of masculine subjectivity in its canonical texts.

Book Synopsis Yves Congar 1904-1995 by : Etienne Fouilloux
Download or read book Yves Congar 1904-1995 written by Etienne Fouilloux and published by ATF Press. This book was released on 2023-06-01 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the culmination of a long companionship, a final link between a historian familiar with theology and a theologian keen on history. It was in February 1966 that Etienne Fouilloux met the Dominican theologian Yves Congar for the first time. He then began a thesis on the origins of ecumenism. Congar liberally opened his personal archives to him. For fifteen years, Congar did not leave the horizon of Fouilloux. Congar attended the defense of his thesis in 1980. Then, according to the work of the historian, the theologian was never far away, voluntary or involuntary protagonist of many of his studies on the theological crises of the 1930s and 1950s, the Second World War or the Second Vatican Council. In scattered but recurring touches, Fouilloux had already shed light on many aspects of Congar's work, including by publishing Journal d'un theologien. 1946-1956 (Editions du Cerf, 2000). Today, an overall plan and the cement necessary for writing a life story conceal the many stones previously brought to the building and finally constitute a biography of Father Congar. The sum is undeniably greater than the addition of the parts. Sabine Rousseau, Archives de Sciences sociales des religions October-December 2021.
Download or read book Artsense written by Laodan and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2005-11-01 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Painting is bound to shine again soon the light of wisdom. Some critics declared its death in the seventies and eighties. While shocking their statement was nevertheless right on the mark. Art has indeed lost the societal functionality that has driven it from its early beginnings till sometime after the 2nd World War or over 99.9% of its time-span. Art has indeed always been instrumental at defusing the wisdom of the men of knowledge at the attention of all. Societies need cohesion to survive and, having a far deeper impact on humans than words and theories, visual signs imposed themselves as privileged instruments of that communication. Nowadays ever increasing pace of scientific changes and globalization impose themselves in a vacuum of accepted values which results in a deep shock and a strong need for sensical answers from new visual signs. This book is about a coming Renaissance in painting that will be driven as an answer to that societal need.

Yves Congar kept in a discontinuous way, a journal on the main events of the life of church to which he was involved in this period, either directly or indirectly. he assembled these writings which constitute a living chronicle and informs the reader about the history of intellectual life of the zCatholic Church after the Second World War. Fresh out of captivity the Congar after the War he was under suspicion and sanctions by ecclesial authorities for some of his writings. The journal details this ordeal, and is an exceptional document on the relationship between theological research and Roman magisterium at the end of the pontificate of Pius XII.

Book Synopsis Comparing Greek Colonies by : Camilla Colombi
Download or read book Comparing Greek Colonies written by Camilla Colombi and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2022-08-22 with total page 614 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The need for a "new" book on Greek colonization arose to analyse this phenomenon as a long-term process in a wide geographic area. The events related to individual cities and regions, although geographically very distant from each other, are linked through an articulated network of material and immaterial relations and have to be considered as part of a broader mobility process in a Mediterranean perspective. The intention of "Comparing Greek Colonies" is to bring geographically and culturally distant regions such as Southern Italy/Sicily and the Black Sea, closer together, not merely to find "similarities and differences", but to broaden the scholars’ perspective and overcome existing, generalizing, and biased models, that are often rooted in local scientific traditions. The proceedings of the international conference "Comparing Greek Colonies. Mobility and Settlement Consolidation from Southern Italy to the Black Sea (8th – 6th century BC)", 7.–9.11.2018 in Rome, are structured around three core topics (economic system; relationships with the indigenous populations; social and territorial systems) that constitute the cornerstones of the political formation of the polis in the Archaic period and for its development during the Classical and Hellenistic Ages.
