Book Synopsis Cassell's Encyclopedia of Queer Myth, Symbol, and Spirit by : Randy P. Conner
Download or read book Cassell's Encyclopedia of Queer Myth, Symbol, and Spirit written by Randy P. Conner and published by Burns & Oates. This book was released on 1997 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Did you know that in medieval French folklore a person might change sex by passing under a rainbow? Or that same-sex unions have been celebrated by peoples of the ancient Mediterranean, Africa, China, and Indigenous America? Or that Sappho, da Vinci, Emily Dickinson, Nijinsky, Benjamin Britten, Mishima, Adrienne Rich, Audre Lorde, Keith Haring, Boy George, and Derek Jarman number among those who have explored the spiritual dimension of gender and sexuality in their works? While the terms many of us employ today to identify ourselves - 'queer', 'lesbian', 'gay', 'bisexual', 'transgendered' - differ markedly from those of peoples of other times and places, we are nevertheless the bearers of a rich spiritual history that has been ignored or suppressed, a history encoded in sacred texts as well as in works of art, music, dance and other media. Drawing upon religion, mythology, folklore, anthropology, history and the arts, the Encyclopedia is a cornucopia of queer spirituality, containing over 1,500 alphabetically arranged entries from Aakulujjuusi to Zeus.

Book Synopsis Baroque New Worlds by : Lois Parkinson Zamora
Download or read book Baroque New Worlds written by Lois Parkinson Zamora and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2010-07-13 with total page 690 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Baroque New Worlds traces the changing nature of Baroque representation in Europe and the Americas across four centuries, from its seventeenth-century origins as a Catholic and monarchical aesthetic and ideology to its contemporary function as a postcolonial ideology aimed at disrupting entrenched power structures and perceptual categories. Baroque forms are exuberant, ample, dynamic, and porous, and in the regions colonized by Catholic Europe, the Baroque was itself eventually colonized. In the New World, its transplants immediately began to reflect the cultural perspectives and iconographies of the indigenous and African artisans who built and decorated Catholic structures, and Europe’s own cultural products were radically altered in turn. Today, under the rubric of the Neobaroque, this transculturated Baroque continues to impel artistic expression in literature, the visual arts, architecture, and popular entertainment worldwide. Since Neobaroque reconstitutions necessarily reference the European Baroque, this volume begins with the reevaluation of the Baroque that evolved in Europe during the late nineteenth century and the early twentieth. Foundational essays by Friedrich Nietzsche, Heinrich Wölfflin, Walter Benjamin, Eugenio d’Ors, René Wellek, and Mario Praz recuperate and redefine the historical Baroque. Their essays lay the groundwork for the revisionist Latin American essays, many of which have not been translated into English until now. Authors including Alejo Carpentier, José Lezama Lima, Severo Sarduy, Édouard Glissant, Haroldo de Campos, and Carlos Fuentes understand the New World Baroque and Neobaroque as decolonizing strategies in Latin America and other postcolonial contexts. This collection moves between art history and literary criticism to provide a rich interdisciplinary discussion of the transcultural forms and functions of the Baroque. Contributors. Dorothy Z. Baker, Walter Benjamin, Christine Buci-Glucksmann, José Pascual Buxó, Leo Cabranes-Grant, Haroldo de Campos, Alejo Carpentier, Irlemar Chiampi, William Childers, Gonzalo Celorio, Eugenio d’Ors, Jorge Ruedas de la Serna, Carlos Fuentes, Édouard Glissant, Roberto González Echevarría, Ángel Guido, Monika Kaup, José Lezama Lima, Friedrich Nietzsche, Mario Praz, Timothy J. Book Synopsis Mass Media and Political Transition by : Joseph Man Chan
Download or read book Mass Media and Political Transition written by Joseph Man Chan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 1991 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on Hong Kong as a unique living laboratory, this pioneering work examines the dynamic interplay of the press and the power structure in transition. The Hong Kong press aligns ideologically and organizationally with the rift between the Kuomintang and the Chinese Communist Party in Chinese politics. This volume illustrates, both theoretically and empirically, the boundaries of journalistic paradigms, the conditions for paradigm shifts, and the limits of such change. Mass Media and Political Transition provides a framework and a base line for comparative studies that explore the role of the media in transitional polities.

Book Synopsis The Theater of Truth by : William Egginton
Download or read book The Theater of Truth written by William Egginton and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2009-12-17 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Theater of Truth argues that seventeenth-century baroque and twentieth-century neobaroque aesthetics have to be understood as part of the same complex. The Neobaroque, rather than being a return to the stylistic practices of a particular time and place, should be described as the continuation of a cultural strategy produced as a response to a specific problem of thought that has beset Europe and the colonial world since early modernity. This problem, in its simplest philosophical form, concerns the paradoxical relation between appearances and what they represent. Egginton explores expressions of this problem in the art and literature of the Hispanic Baroques, new and old. He shows how the strategies of these two Baroques emerged in the political and social world of the Spanish Empire, and how they continue to be deployed in the cultural politics of the present. Further, he offers a unified theory for the relation between the two Baroques and a new vocabulary for distinguishing between their ideological values.

Book excerpt: Scarlett Cristiano is my enemy. He’s also the only man with whom I’ve ever felt safe. Protected. But I have to remember that he married me with one purpose in mind. Revenge. I would be the bridge to his real enemies. I can’t let myself forget that he isn’t the hero of this story. His hands are covered in blood. I saw that with my own eyes. Cristiano I thought I knew Scarlett’s past, but I didn’t know anything. I thought I knew the worst of monsters, but I hadn’t seen anything yet. Sometimes you have to lie to yourself to survive. Sometimes it’s those closest to you who will bury their knives in your back. Too many times it’s the innocents who pay for your mistakes. For your refusal to see. I can’t let Scarlett pay for mine. But I may be too late to stop it.

Book Synopsis We Are All Made of Stars by : Rowan Coleman
Download or read book We Are All Made of Stars written by Rowan Coleman and published by Ballantine Books. This book was released on 2016-07-26 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Fans of Jojo Moyes will love We Are All Made of Stars” (Good Housekeeping). “A beautiful web of a book” (Jodi Picoult), this life-affirming novel tells an unforgettable story about second chances, the power of words, and the resilience of the heart. A dedicated nurse, Stella finds comfort at the hospice where she works the late shift, especially since her husband returned from Afghanistan—cold, distant, and shattered by painful memories he refuses to share. The hospice at night is another world, where the dying receive closure by creating the letters that Stella helps them write. The pages are filled with love and humor, sometimes regret, and, occasionally, even instructions for a perplexed husband on how to run appliances. There’s one rule: The letters are mailed only after the patient has passed. Suddenly Stella is faced with a dilemma: A woman under her care, Grace, has written a confession to the son she abandoned many years before. The letter clearly needs to be read before Grace dies. But if Stella mails it now, she breaks the rule—and risks tampering not only with Grace’s wishes but also with fate. Navigating passion and grief, loyalty and loss, and a marriage threatened by silence and secrets, Stella discovers that letters hold a special power: granting solace, saving memories, nurturing relationships. As the words endure, love redeems. Praise for We Are All Made of Stars “A beautiful web of a book that reminds us of how we are all connected, and how to die—and live—without regrets. Is that a tear in my eye? No, that’s a tear in your eye.”—Jodi Picoult, New York Times bestselling author of Leaving Time and The Storyteller “We Are All Made of Stars will break your heart and put the pieces back together—fans of Jojo Moyes’s Me Before You, this one is right up your alley.”—Refinery29 “Coleman uses several voices and perspectives to turn a potentially dark story into one filled with light. A tear-jerking but ultimately uplifting story.”—Kirkus Reviews
