Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The urgency to tell the story of the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, the only republic in the former Yugoslavia to secede without bloodshed, is made more compelling by the crisis in Kosovo. In Making Peace Prevail, Alice Ackermann offers the first in-depth account of how Macedonia—one of the few examples of successful preventive diplomacy—held onto peace during the violent breakup of Yugoslavia in the 1990s. Faced with ethnic tensions and the threat of the Bosnian war, this republic was spared the fate of Croatia and Bosnia. With this book Ackermann furthers our understanding of the challenge in conflict prevention in multiethnic and newly democratized societies. She provides a framework of analysis that underscores the "art of conflict prevention." She notes the activity of the major players such as the United Nations and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) but maintains that groups such as the Working Group of the International Conference on the Former Yugoslavia—although not in the public eye—accomplished much through an "interactive workshop" approach to conflict management. In her epilogue Ackermann addresses the most recent developments with NATO's intervention in Kosovo and the Balkans and the internal forces at work in Macedonia, which account for its current state of stability.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the Second World War, approximately 1000 Christian chaplains accompanied Wehrmacht forces wherever they went, from Poland to France, Greece, North Africa, and the Soviet Union. Chaplains were witnesses to atrocity and by their presence helped normalize extreme violence and legitimate its perpetrators. Military chaplains played a key role in propagating a narrative of righteousness that erased Germany's victims and transformed the aggressors into noble figures who suffered but triumphed over their foes. Between God and Hitler is the first book to examine Protestant and Catholic military chaplains in Germany from Hitler's rise to power, to defeat, collapse, and Allied occupation. Drawing on a wide array of sources – chaplains' letters and memoirs, military reports, Jewish testimonies, photographs, and popular culture – this book offers insight into how Christian clergy served the cause of genocide, sometimes eagerly, sometimes reluctantly, even unknowingly, but always loyally.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published in 1999, this text examines domestic wars, looking at inter-state relations only in as far as they are directly relevant to understand such wars. The book aims to indicate how intra-state war differs from the inter-state war, and focuses primarily on such domestic armed conflicts that at least have significant ethnonational components. The book assesses how heterogeneous a category "ethnic conflict" is in terms of causes and consequences, and gauges the complex interplay between class, regionalism and ethnicity. It is not limited to description and causal analysis, but also attempts to assess suggestions as to what types of actors may contribute in what ways to avoiding ethnonational mobilization/polarization, avoiding militarization of manifest conflicts, and de-escalating militarized conflicts by looking for tenable generalizations on what types of approaches are fruitful in bringing about de-escalation, ceasefires, political compromises, peaceful division or peaceful integration, reconciliation.

Book excerpt: Immanuel Kant's legal philosophy and theory have played an enormous role in the development of law since the eighteenth century. Although this influence can be seen primarily in German law and in the law of nations which have traditionally been oriented toward German legal development, today Kant's philosophy has experienced a Renaissance in the Anglo-American legal world. This anthology collects what the editors believe to be the very best of articles on Kant's legal theory, with an emphasis on his Metaphysics of Morals of 1797. In particular the articles relate to: 1) the nature of law and justice, 2) private law, 3) public law, 4) criminal law, 5) international law, and 6) cosmopolitan law.
