Book excerpt: "This exhibition is the first to offer an extensive overview of the Museum's holdings of early Central European drawings, many of which were acquired in the last two decades. An emphasis on works by later sixteenth- and seventeenth-century artists is balanced by a selection of German drawings from the fifteenth and earlier sixteenth century, of which some of the most exceptional ones--including works by Albrecht Deurer--entered the Museum with The Robert Lehman Collection in 1975."--Publisher's website.

Book excerpt: Time and Transformation brings together a variety of seventeenth-century Dutch paintings and works on paper in a major examination of themes dealing with the transformative effects of time and circumstance. The Dutch were fascinated with this idea and the variety of motifs used to convey it. Included are images of local landscapes with medieval structures left in ruins in the wake of the Spanish wars, depictions of rustic cottages and farmhouses, Dutch Italianate landscapes with Roman ruins, and representations of accidental ruins caused by flood or fire. Non-architectural imagery, such as vanitas still lifes and depictions of ruined trees encourage broader thinking on the meanings and associations of images of the fragmentary. Among the artists included are Rembrandt, Jacob van Ruisdael, Jan van Goyen, Abraham Bloemaert, Willem Kalf, Gerard Dou, and Bartholomaus Breenberg.

Book excerpt: This beautiful and important book highlights the collection of European drawings at the Yale University Art Gallery, one of America's premier university museums. From intimate studies to exquisite finished compositions, this selection of works documents the history of European drawing practices beginning with late-medieval model books and progressing to the verge of the modern period. The accompanying text--written by a team of scholars--offers a unique introduction to various critical and technical aspects of the study of master drawings, brought to life through drawings from a range of national schools and in a variety of media. Among the drawings examined in this handsomely produced volume are an animated pen and ink sketch by Giulio Romano, a pastoral landscape by Claude Lorrain, a forceful and humorous caricature by Guercino, a scene from the epic poem Orlando Furioso by Jean-Honoré Fragonard, and a delicate portrait by Edgar Degas.

Book excerpt: After defining Bril as a draughtsman, this study clarifies aspects of his working methods and determines the types and functions of his drawings. It places Bril in the context of contemporary landscape draughtmanship and analyzes Bril's specific contribution to the evolution of the genre in Rome, from the mannerist views of Girolamo Muziano to the pastoral landscapes and seascapes of Claude Lorrain. Bril's position as a guiding force to two generations of Netherlandish artists who visited Rome and the influence Bril exerted on the development of landscape is also investigated. The final section of the study is a catalogue raisonne of Bril's drawings. While any catalogue raisonne is by nature evolving, the attempt to establish a secure canon is very important in finally placing Bril and his contemporaries in the correct perspective.
