Book excerpt: In the summer of 1937, Thomas Wolfe was in the North Carolina mountains revising a piece about a party and subsequent fire at the Park Avenue penthouse apartment of the fictional Esther and Frederick Jack. He wrote to his agent, Elizabeth Nowell, 'I think it is now a single thing, as much a single thing as anything I've ever written.' Abridged and edited versions of the story were published twice, as a novella in Scribner's Monthly (May 1939) and as part of You Can't Go Home Again (1940). Now Suzanne Stutman and John Idol have worked from manuscript sources at Harvard University to reconstruct The Party at Jack's as outlined by Wolfe before his death. Here, in its untruncated state, Wolfe's novella affords a significant glimpse of a Depression-era New York inhabited by Wall Street wheelers and dealers and the theatrical and artistic elite. Wolfe describes the Jacks and their social circle with lavish attention to mannerisms and to clothing, furnishings, and other trappings of wealth and privilege. The sharply drawn contrast between the decadence of the party-goers and the struggles of the working classes in the streets below reveals Wolfe's gifts as both a writer and a sharp social critic.

Including anecdotes from an eclectic list of well-known figures such as Allen Ginsberg, William S. Burroughs, and Gore Vidal, as well as Kerouac's ordinary acquaintances, this groundbreaking oral biography—the first of its kind—presents us with a remarkably insightful portrait of an American legend and the spirit of a generation.

Book excerpt: “Tyler stirs up an intoxicating cocktail composed of equal parts delicious name-dropping gossip, venomous Hollywood satire and steamy boy-meets-boy action." — Publishers Weekly Prepare to plunge headfirst into the tumultuous, high-stakes world of Bart Caine, a battle-scarred publicist at Sterling Studios, the glittering epicenter of Hollywood’s family entertainment empire. Bart’s workplace is a breeding ground for arrogance and ego, where insufferable celebrities clash with monstrous movie studio executives. At the center of this maelstrom of power and ambition is his vicious boss, Stephanie Hough—a woman hell-bent on power and destroying Bart’s career. But in Sin City, the spotlight doesn’t shine solely on Bart. Enter Paco Castillo, a fiery Hispanic hustler whose dreams of a screenwriting career have been ruthlessly shattered by a nefarious and predatory showbiz agent. In this cutthroat industry where ambition drives every move and alliance, Paco wields his talents for manipulation like a weapon—especially in the bedroom, where his incendiary skills adapt effortlessly to intimate encounters with women and men equally. Exploiting his ability to captivate and control virtually anyone with his charm and sex appeal, he perceives Bart as his passport to the golden gates of the movie studios. However, a chance meeting with TV’s quintessentially all-American and wholesome sitcom dad, Peter Jacks, offers an even more cunning and lucrative opportunity. The question isn’t whether Paco is willing to go the distance; it’s just how far he’ll push the boundaries—because, as it turns out, there are no limits in Hollywood. As these showbiz mavericks set the stage for a revenge-fueled showdown against Stephanie and the ruthless entertainment industry, they inadvertently unearth a revelation with the potential for seismic reverberations throughout Hollywood. In a world where hidden agendas and scandalous secrets hold sway, Bart and Paco find themselves ensnared in career-defining battles. As they swim the treacherous waters teeming with opportunistic sharks hungry for blood, they discover just how murky the depths of Tinseltown can truly be. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The reasons behind the increase in autism diagnoses have become hotly contested in the media as well as within the medical, scholarly, and autistic communities. Jordynn Jack suggests the proliferating number of discussions point to autism as a rhetorical phenomenon that engenders attempts to persuade through arguments, appeals to emotions, and representational strategies. In Autism and Gender: From Refrigerator Mothers to Computer Geeks, Jack focuses on the ways gender influences popular discussion and understanding of autism's causes and effects. She identifies gendered theories like the “refrigerator mother” theory, for example, which blames emotionally distant mothers for autism, and the “extreme male brain” theory, which links autism to the modes of systematic thinking found in male computer geeks. Jack's analysis reveals how people employ such highly gendered theories to craft rhetorical narratives around stock characters--fix-it dads, heroic mother warriors rescuing children from autism--that advocate for ends beyond the story itself while also allowing the storyteller to gain authority, understand the disorder, and take part in debates. Autism and Gender reveals the ways we build narratives around controversial topics while offering new insights into the ways rhetorical inquiry can and does contribute to conversations about gender and disability.
