Book excerpt: Long considered the essential guide to Joyce's famously difficult work, Roland McHugh's Annotations to "Finnegans Wake" provides both novice readers and seasoned Joyceans with a wealth of information in an easy-to-use format uniquely suited to this densely layered text. Each page of the Annotations corresponds directly with a page of the standard Viking/Penguin edition of Finnegans Wake and contains line-by-line notes following the placement of the passages to which they refer. The reader can thus look directly from text to notes and back again, with no need to consult separate glossaries or other listings. McHugh's richly detailed notes distill decades of scholarship, explicating foreign words, unusual English connotations and colloquial expressions, place names, historical events, song titles and quotations, parodies of other texts, and Joyce's diverse literary and popular sources. The third edition has added material reflecting fifteen years of research, including significant new insights from Joyce's compositional notebooks (the "Buffalo Notebooks"), now being edited for the first time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Woman, like man, should be freely permitted to do whatever she can do well." So said Frances E. Willard, who lived her life in the firm belief of this principle and who was instrumental in the passage of two amendments to the U.S. Constitution. A passionate advocate for women's rights, prohibition, and underprivileged people, she was devoted to making federal aid to education, free school lunches, unions, the eight-hour work day, work relief for the poor, municipal sanitation and boards of health, national transportation, anti-rape laws, and protections against child abuse a reality. This long-forgotten and out-of-print book is available for the first time for e-readers. In Willard's own words she describes her life as an educator, temperance reformer, and suffragist. She was an educator and later president of the Women's Christian Temperance Union She traveled extensively and even climbed the Great Pyramid in Egypt. Her sexual orientation is still debated today but she states in this volume: "The loves of women for each other grow more numerous each day and I have pondered much why these things were. That so little should be said about them surprises me, for they are everywhere... In these days when any capable and careful woman can honorably earn her own support, there is no village that has not its examples of 'two hearts in counsel,' both of which are feminine." She had many passionate attachments to other women and she discusses this in her book. Willard was the first woman whose statue was included in the Statuary Hall of the United States Capitol building. Be sure to LOOK INSIDE or download a sample.

This book was released on 2013-11-22 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Around the World in Eighty Days was published in 1873 and features Phileas Fogg as the protagonist. Fogg, a noble Londoner who lived on Savile Row, had made a wager at the Reform Club, for £20,000 (worth over a million pounds in 21st century value) that he could travel around the world in eighty days. Fogg is a very careful and precise man who has just fired his manservant for bringing him shaving water that was two degrees colder than he asked for. Fogg has a new valet, Jean Passepartout, a young Frenchman, who is looking forward to a quiet life with Phileas. Around the World in Eighty Days is Verne at his most fun – there was plenty of comic relief in the novel. He was able to use his own experience of recent travels to provide background for the narrative. The book was finished under a punishing deadline Verne set for himself – not unlike Fogg’s deadline for circumnavigating the world. The book was the most successful in terms of sales during the author’s lifetime, selling 108,000 copies before his death. This annotated edition includes a biography and critical essay.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A New York Times Book Review Editors' Choice Selection "The most exciting and definitive collection of Lovecraft's work out there." –Danielle Trussoni, New York Times Book Review No lover of gothic literature will want to be without this literary keepsake, the final volume of Leslie Klinger’s tour-de-force chronicle of Lovecraft’s canon. In 2014, The New Annotated H. P. Lovecraft was published to widespread acclaim— vaunted as a “treasure trove” (Joyce Carol Oates) for Lovecraft aficionados and general readers, alike. Hailed by Harlan Ellison as an “Olympian landmark of modern gothic literature,” the volume included twenty-two of Lovecraft’s original stories. Now, in this final volume, best- selling author Leslie S. Klinger reanimates twenty-five additional stories, the balance of Lovecraft’s significant fiction, including “Rats in the Wall,” a post– World War I story about the terrors of the past, and the newly contextualized “The Horror at Red Hook,” which recently has been adapted by best- selling novelist Victor LaValle. In following Lovecraft’s own literary trajectory, readers can witness his evolution from Rhode Island critic to prescient literary genius whose titanic influence would only be appreciated decades after his death. Including hundreds of eye- opening annotations and dozens of rare images, Beyond Arkham finally provides the complete picture of Lovecraft’s unparalleled achievements in fiction.

Book excerpt: This second edition of a unique companion to Thackeray's great novel enables the reader to follow the novelist step by step through the maze of his erudition, clarifying the immense range of references in the novel. Since these annotations are keyed to Thackeray's chapters, not to the page numbers of any particular edition of the novel, they can be consulted in connection with any edition of Vanity Fair the reader happens to own. Within each chapter of this book, the entries follow the order in which they appear in the novel. In addition to the words, phrases, and allusions which obviously or possibly require annotation, the compilers have occasionally commented upon subtleties of narration-without intruding critical opinions upon the reader-and entered a few remarks on Thackeray's own illustrations. They have also addressed textual matters, questions of composition and publication, connections with other areas of Thackeray's oeuvre, and the influence of other works of literature on the novel. Intended for undergraduate and graduate students studying the English Novel. Also of interest to scholars in the field of Victorian Literature as well as general readers.

Book excerpt: A New York Times Editors’ Choice: “A mind-bending romp through a gender-fluid, eighteenth century London . . . a joyous mash-up of literary genres shot through with queer theory and awash in sex, crime, and revolution.” NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY The New Yorker • HuffPost • Kirkus Reviews • Finalist for the Lambda Literary Award • Shortlisted for the Center for Fiction First Novel Prize • “A dazzling tale of queer romance and resistance.”—Time Jack Sheppard and Edgeworth Bess were the most notorious thieves, jailbreakers, and lovers of eighteenth-century London. Yet no one knows the true story; their confessions have never been found. Until now. Reeling from heartbreak, a scholar named Dr. Voth discovers a long-lost manuscript—a gender-defying exposé of Jack and Bess’s adventures. Is Confessions of the Fox an authentic autobiography or a hoax? As Dr. Voth is drawn deeper into Jack and Bess’s tale of underworld resistance and gender transformation, it becomes clear that their fates are intertwined—and only a miracle will save them all. Writing with the narrative mastery of Sarah Waters and the playful imagination of Nabokov, Jordy Rosenberg is an audacious storyteller of extraordinary talent. Praise for Confessions of the Fox “A cunning metafiction of vulpine versatility . . . an action-adventure tale with postmodern flourishes; an academic comedy spliced with period erotica; an intimate meditation on belonging.”—Katy Waldman, The New Yorker “Confessions of the Fox is so goddamned good. Reading it was like an out-of-body experience. I want to run through the streets screaming about it. It should be in the personal canon of every queer and non-cis person. Read it.”—Carmen Maria Machado, National Book Award finalist for Her Body and Other Parties “A hat tip to Moby-Dick . . . a running footnote hall of mirrors to rival Borges . . . one of the most trenchant calls for progressive action that I have read in a very long time.”—The New York Times Book Review “An ambitious work of metafiction, a sexy queer love story . . . a bold first novel.”—Entertainment Weekly

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A labor of love, this fully annotated edition of Bram Stoker's Dracula is meant for the university level literature student. Can be used as a resource when reading Dracula or on its own. Inspired by the La Trobe University subject Gothic Literature and its Children, and initially made up of notes taken for that subject, and driven by the editor's difficulty in locating a digital annotated copy at a reasonable price. Hundreds of hours of work has gone into this edition and it is being offered at a low price to ensure that as many students as possible are able to benefit from it. Some of the most recent literary scholarly approaches to the text have been incorporated into the annotations, alongside definitive articles and interpretations. Students are offered a never before seen enriched text that both enhances the depth of reading and prepares for further scholarly investigation. Sheds light on often dismissed and neglected parts of the text and considers different scholarly approaches to interpretation, including post-colonial and gender studies. This edition also includes definitions for obscure terms, explanations of key parts of the text and important historical notes. Relying on dozens of sources, including many known to have been employed by Bram Stoker. Includes images from the British Library and other collections, to help illustrate key aspects of the text. Lavishly illustrated throughout, including over 20 original and exclusive artworks. This edition is a scholarly reference, a beautifully formatted novel and a creative piece of art. The original text of the American edition of Dracula has been carefully edited to provide the closest possible presentation of Bram Stoker's original vision. Important differences between the American and British editions are noted in the annotations and the text has been completely edited to fix spelling errors and typos, where doing so enhances, rather than diminishes, the integrity of the text. Possibly the most accurate, and faithful to the author's original intentions, edition of the Dracula text ever published. Meant for the university level student, but equally engaging for the casual reader or anybody with an interest in Dracula. Deliberately priced to allow for maximum possible accessibility. A truly enhanced edition of Dracula, and a labor of love.

Book excerpt: For a long time, people had been schooled to think of modern literature's relationship to politics as indirect or obscure, and often to find the politics of literature deep within its unconsciously ideological structures and forms. But twentieth-century writers were directly involved in political parties and causes, and many viewed their writing as part of their activism. This Companion tell a story of the rich and diverse ways in which literature and politics over the twentieth century coincided, overlapped – and also clashed. Covering some of the century's most influential political ideas, moments, and movements, nineteen academic experts uncover new ways of thinking about the relationship between literature and politics. Liberalism, communism, fascism, suffragism, pacifism, federalism, different nationalisms, civil rights, women's rights, sexual rights, Indigenous rights, environmentalism, neoliberalism: twentieth-century authors wrote in direct response to political movements, ideas, events, and campaigns.
