Book excerpt: Sometimes we are damaged by people we know, trust, and love. This damage shocks us and sends us into a state of emotional numbness for a while. We trap ourselves in a constant inner fight to believe the reality of the damage. We blame ourselves. We get shocked and unwantedly disappointed. We question our self-worth. We review what has happened in our mind and look for an excuse to change the whole perception. We enrage, hold grudges, and we plot our revenge. This bitter fight will never end unless we change the purpose of the fight to find our true selves. We can either give in and play the victim or get on the journey to become strong and unfold our real value. The journey is there; grab your tools and go for the breakthrough.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Had he been heir to a throne, Jack Conroy could not have felt the weight of expectation more. He’ll go to Wall Street just as his father did, but two things complicate the family plan. First, Jack discovers an affinity for landscape design. Second, he discovers Veronica Cashmiris. Jack’s parents assume that Veronica is just a college infatuation that will yield to Wall Street after graduation. However, Veronica is no passing fancy. She loves and understands Jack, perhaps better than his parents do. The intuition of Veronica and inclination of Jack give way to the world-wise wisdom of Jack’s parents. But what happens to Jack turns all hopes for his future into a kind of haunting reverie. It is not until Veronica gives birth to their son that hope returns.
Book Synopsis Oh Threats of Hell and Hopes of Paradise by : John Fee Gibson
Download or read book Oh Threats of Hell and Hopes of Paradise written by John Fee Gibson and published by First Edition Design Pub.. This book was released on 2013-07-08 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A book of five short stories 1. "Oh threats of hell and hopes of paradise" 2. "One thing at least is certain, this life flies" 3. "One thing is certain and the rest is lies" 4. "The flower that once has blown forever dies" 5. "I sent my soul into the invisible some letter of the afterlife spell" My stories (five) are told in the first person and inspired by the "Rubaiyat" of Omar Khayyam, the twelfth century philosopher and Edgar Allen Poe. They tell of rape, murder, a philandering preacher, an engineer driven to the gates of insanity by his perfectionist ideals and a despondent professor attempting to leave his legacy by trying to prove Carl Jung's theory of the collective unconscious. I have been writing on these stories for a few years as the spirit would move me to write. When someone asks me what they are about, or to summarize them, my brain sort of goes into neutral and I really don't know where to start. I generally try to change the subject since I can't summarize in 4000 characters or less what I had for breakfast this morning. If the inquisitive person is persistent I simply offer to let them read the book and then they change the subject. Actually, after meditating upon the "Rubaiyat" of Omar Khayyam and wallowing his quatrains around in my mind for a while, I generally end up writing a little. I think I'm much like Omar; still trying to deduce what this thing we call "life" is all about! My stories touch on things from the simple life of an Appalachian Mountains sharecropper, a dubious country preacher, rape, murder, an arduous and unnecessary flight from justice, snakebites and miraculous healings, the lynching of an innocent black man, and subsistence farm life to, the complicated motives of brainy engineers and chemists attempting to leave their legacy to science by proving knowledge can be transmitted genetically; thereby, proving Carl Jung's theory of the collective unconscious to be valid. Keywords: Fiction, Short Stories, Rubaiyat, Omar Khayyam, Carl Jung, Life, Murder, Rape, Preacher, Engineer
Download or read book Tex Rickard written by Colleen Aycock and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-01-10 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whether opening saloons, raising cattle, or promoting sporting events, George Lewis "Tex" Rickard (1870-1929) possessed a drive to be the best. After an early career as a cowboy and Texas sheriff, Rickard pioneered the largest ranch in South America, built a series of profitable saloons in the Klondike and Nevada gold rushes, and turned boxing into a million-dollar sport. As "the Father of Madison Square Garden," he promoted over 200 fights, including some of the most notable of the 20th century: the "Longest Fight," the "Great White Hope," fight, and the famous "Long Count" fight. Along the way, he rubbed shoulders with some of history's most renowned figures, including Teddy Roosevelt, Wyatt Earp, Bat Masterson, John Ringling, Jack Dempsey, and Gene Tunney. This detailed biography chronicles Rickard's colorful life and his critical role in the evolution of boxing from a minor sport to a modern spectacle.

Book excerpt: Among the great lightweights of the 1940s and 1950s, Boxing Hall of Famer Sidney "Beau Jack" Walker (1921-2000) was virtually orphaned by his parents and eked out a living as a shoeshine boy. He honed his craft fighting battles royale for wealthy white members of the prestigious Augusta National Golf Club, eventually receiving financing for his career from club founders. He went on to win two lightweight titles and set numerous records. He was the draw for the highest admission paid for a ringside seat--$100,000--and was named "Fighter of the Year" in 1944. Like most black pugilists of his day he struggled against discrimination in the sport. Despite this, he sustained an impressive 18-year professional career--117 fights, 83 wins, 40 by KO. Walker retired from the ring penniless and went back to shining shoes, the money set aside for him by his handlers mysteriously depleted.

Book excerpt: Toadsuck isnt a town. Its not even a village. Its a place located on the bank of the Arkansas River. But, as a child, author John J. Dub Black grew up in the area. In this memoir, he narrates a patchwork of stories that re? ect the adventures of his youth near Toadsuck. Tales from Toadsuck follows four years of Blacks life beginning at age ten, when he fought the two asylum attendants as they dragged his screaming mother from their house, locked her in a van, and left. His alcoholic dad watched quietly and then drove away in his car never to return. His memoir describes the boys thirty-mile bike ride through farm country to the home of his aunt and uncle who let him live there and work on the farm. He shares tales of being attacked by a 400-pound wild pig, nearly drowning in a raging river, and playing Halloween pranks with his friends. A story of both survival and love, Tales from Toadsuck tells of a boy coming of age while tackling both the good and the bad that life throws at him.
