Book Synopsis Mystery and Matter by : Michel Remery
Download or read book Mystery and Matter written by Michel Remery and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2010-12-20 with total page 687 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most of the scholarship regarding the Dutch monk and architect Dom Hans van der Laan OSB (1904-1991) has been narrowly focused on his architectural theory and projects. The liturgical and theological dimensions have been virtually neglected, though they are vital for a proper understanding of his thought. Through a thorough reading of the original sources, including previously unexplored documents from various archives, this book takes an interdisciplinary approach to Van der Laan’s theory. It brings together the different aspects of his work by studying both the liturgical-theological and architectural elements. On this basis the book offers a synthesis of the way in which Van der Laan was able to link earthly matter to the divine Mystery.

Within those cities public spaces are the meeting place of politics and culture, social and individual territories, instrumental and expressive concerns. Public Space and the Challenges of Urban Transformation in Europe investigates how European city authorities understand and deal with their public spaces, how this interacts with market forces, social norms and cultural expectations, whether and how this relates to the needs and experiences of their citizens, exploring new strategies and innovative practices for strengthening public spaces and urban culture. These questions are explored by looking at 13 case studies from across Europe, written by active scholars in the area of public space and organized in three parts: strategies, plans and policies multiple roles of public space and everyday life in the city. This book is essential reading for students and scholars interested in the design and development of public space. The European case studies provide interesting examples and comparisons of how cities deal with their public space and issues of space and society.
Download or read book Idiot written by Kris Martin and published by Distanz Verlag Gmbh C/O Edel Germany Gmbh LLC. This book was released on 2020-03-16 with total page 1500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conceptual Rigor and Elegant Materiality. Kris Martin (b. Kortrijk, 1972; lives and works in Ghent) makes art that fascinates beholders with its conceptual rigor and elegant play with the physical properties of his materials. In installations, sculptu-res, photographs, drawings, writings, and sound pieces, the Belgian conceptual artist raises existential questions. Working in the tradition of the objet trouvé, he performs minute interventions to alter the essence of objects, creating blanks that the beholder can fill with his or her own associations. Through such displacements of context, which reflect his subtle sense of humor, Martin examines the intense experience of time and the ephemeral qualities of art. Published in conjunction with Martin's first solo exhibition at the S.M.A.K. Stedelijk Museum voor Actuele Kunst in Ghent, the artist's book Idiot is a handwritten copy of the literary classic of the same title by Fyodor Dostoevsky. Martin spent several months faithfully replicating each of 1,496 pages, replacing the hero's name with his own for a unique and peculiar emulation of Prince Myshkin's quest for spiritual transformation.

Book Synopsis Reclaiming (the Urbanism Of) Mumbai by : Kelly Shannon
Download or read book Reclaiming (the Urbanism Of) Mumbai written by Kelly Shannon and published by Sun Academia. This book was released on 2009 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mumbai is in the midst of dramatic transformations. The juxtaposition of the awe-inspiring and heartrending sensations and physical realities is incredibly powerful. The brutality of change in the city forces one to confront new modes of urbanism and urbanisation. The urbanists and planner has the job to re-think, re-visit and re-learn means for intervention. Social, economic and political forces are reflected in an evolving urban form and local architects and planners are struggling to qualitatively intervene. The first essays in this book are extremely pertinent in their questioning of the status quo and the current mode of city-building. The third part of the book is about hope: which is to be found in the margins. The impossibilities of Mumbai are obvious, the stimulating forms of urbanity are in the margins were they provide clues for possible future interventions.

Book Synopsis Painting and publishing as cultural industries by : Claartje Rasterhoff
Download or read book Painting and publishing as cultural industries written by Claartje Rasterhoff and published by Amsterdam University Press. This book was released on 2017-07-11 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Painting and Publishing as Cultural Industries, 1580-1800 addresses how a small country like the Dutch Republic could become a major player in the creation of cultural goods during the Golden Age. On the basis of quantitative and qualitative sources from art history and book history, Claartje Rasterhoff traces the evolution of the painting and publishing industries from modest trades to booming industries. Informed by studies on cultural industries, she focuses on the role of industrial organization in shaping patterns of growth and innovation. Much like their present-day counterparts, early modern Dutch cultural industries were spatially concentrated, highly networked, and institutionally embedded. This distinct organizational structure helped to reduce uncertainty in the market and stimulated the commercial and creative potential of painters and publishers, for a century at least. Dutch painters and publishers had catered to their markets so rapidly and in such variety, that the exceptional levels of output, quality, and innovation accomplished during the first half of the seventeenth century could not be sustained. As producers came to face saturated domestic markets, they took to limiting risks and strenghtening their distribution and marketing activities. By introducing the concepts of business cycles and spatial clusters, Rasterhoff offers a novel explanation
