The conversation focuses on the special connection a donor-conceived child has with other children conceived using the same donor. I've Got Dibs! is a great way to start this conversation with your children, your child's friends, as well as the adults in your life who may be struggling to understand these unique relationships. By sharing this book with her own child the author has helped her daughter confidently respond to questions about her own donor siblings and more importantly understand and appreciate her own special donor family.

Book Synopsis Grammatical Number in English Nouns by : Mark A. Wickens
Download or read book Grammatical Number in English Nouns written by Mark A. Wickens and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1992-03-12 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Apart from the coverage given to it in the grammars, number in English nouns has received relatively little attention, especially in the area of theoretical considerations. Guided by the principles of psychomechanics, Hirtle (1982a) put forth a fairly elaborate theory of number in English nouns. The aim of this work is to provide evidence to validate parts of Hirtle's theory, to verify some of his analyses, and to investigate several problems, some of which are mentioned in his work as subjects for further research. Specific areas treated are ailment nouns, liquid names, ending in -ings, binary objects, abstract -s, and external singulars.
Book Synopsis An English-French Dictionary of Clipped Words by : Fabrice Antoine
Download or read book An English-French Dictionary of Clipped Words written by Fabrice Antoine and published by Peeters Publishers. This book was released on 2000 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dictionary deals with the little words which everyone uses every day without even noticing them and which are so liable to escape the grasp of a speaker of another language - clipped words, obtained by back-clipping or apocope (the dropping of one or more final syllables), by front-clipping or aphesis (the dropping of one or more final syllables), by the combination of these two processes and sometimes further transformed, especially in slang, by the addition of a new ending. The aim is not of course merely to list all these words and say from which longer words they were obtained; an attempt is made here to retrace the history of each of them, its stylistic, semantic and often morphological evolution, to illustrate this with authentic and often pungent or humorous quotations and also to show how each can be translated into the other language. Indeed this is an English-French bilingual dictionary, whose aim is to translate clipped words according to priciples of historical and register fidelity which bilingual dictionaries do not ordinarily set for this type of headword. Thus, clipped words will be shown to have meaning precisely because they are clipped; consequently, this meaning must be preserved and conveyed in translation. This dictionary thus aims at being different from traditional bilingual dictionaries, dictionaries of slang and colloquialisms included, in the structure and content of its articles, in which much space is devoted to the lexicological data, which inform the strictly lexicographical information. Special attention and care have been devoted to the system of cross-references, the recording and presentation of derived forms, variants and compounds and to the presentation of slang or colloquial synonyms of the headwords. The body of the dictionary is preceded by a preface in which the editing principles and methods are outlined and an attempt is made at analyzing the corpus : its historical, sociological and morphological aspects are reviewed, together with the motivations of those that coin or use clippings. These motivations appear essential to the proper appraisal of this body of slang and colloquial words; this dictionary's intention is to pay homage to all the unknown paople who have made the lexicon richer by playing with and on words, with joyful humour, zest and gusto. It is hoped that all lovers of words will have the same pleasure exploring this dictionary as its author had writing it. Professor Fabrice Antoine teaches English at the Universite Charles-de-Gaulle Lille III (France). His research fields are bilingual lexicography, lexicology and translation; he has been a consulting editor for a dozen bilingual dictionaries, general as well as slang ones. He is especially interested in French and English slang and colloquialisms and co-hairs ELEXTRA (Etudes sur le Lexique et la Traduction), a research centre at the University of Lille.

Book Synopsis I have been the bad guy by : Dr. Bernadette "bird" Bowen
Download or read book I have been the bad guy written by Dr. Bernadette "bird" Bowen and published by Dr. Bernadette "bird" Bowen. This book was released on 2023-07-31 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have you ever been made to feel like the bad guy? Dr. bird has too. In this brief memoir, they reveal secrets about their life that they have kept hidden for over thirty years regarding compulsory heterosexuality, repressed/unexplored queernesses, and the late in life realization that -- turns out -- they're #actuallyautistic! Retold from their 33-year-old Dr. bird’s eye view, these extensively brave disclosures add one whole lifetime of flesh onto the U.S. body politic. This timely manuscript illuminates, historicizes, and contextualizes the f***ing fact that autism is not “just a trend” taking off just on TikTok recently, but that there are massive neuroqueer self-realizations happening worldwide in the algorithmic envirusment age. Dr. bird’s writing puts the “cut-the-shit” into “slice-of-life,” providing deep and raw disclosures of lifelong confusion, gaslighting, and struggles with family ostracization, friendship loss, vulnerability, sexual violence, and substance abuse. After extensive sharing, it’s time to grieve. They usher in a eulogy for their lifetimes that once were, by diagnosing how foundational U.S. ideas did and continue to dehumanize, sicken, disable, and deaden us. Then, they preach to the global choir about the single most connected time in history. Dr. bird has a lot more puns and trauma than answers, but in the end, recommends some liberatory antibodies for moving forward, far less miserably.
Download or read book Out of the Depths written by Barry Ivker and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2014-03-17 with total page 533 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Holocaust has presented us with innumerable questions that we wrestle with today. How could such systematic evil be perpetuated in a country renowned for its sophistication in all areas of the sciences and the arts? How could the world turn a blind eye to what was happening and close its doors to potential victims? How could ordinary people participate in this horror? How could others act to save Jews at the risk of their own lives and the lives of their families? How could those facing imminent destruction continue to study agricultural techniques useful to the future state of Israel or teach their children how to paint? It is my hope that these plays will serve to focus on some of these questions, even as we witness new genocidal wars around the world. There is an imperative here as old as the Biblical account of Genesis. It is for us to affirm the goodness of the world as it is - -the potential goodness of human nature- - and the need to create (and procreate) even in the force of destruction and death.
Book Synopsis The Library of Musical Instruments by : Kim Jung-hyuk
Download or read book The Library of Musical Instruments written by Kim Jung-hyuk and published by Deep Vellum Publishing. This book was released on 2016-11-23 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second short-story collection by Kim Jung-hyuk, the author of Penguin News, features a total of eight short stories, including “Syncopation D” which won the 2nd Kim You-jeong Literary Award in 2008. They represent the many sounds sampled by the author when he recorded over 600 kinds of musical instruments. Like instruments coming together in a symphony, the stories combine to make an opus consisting of variations on a theme. While the stories begin in an upbeat fashion and work to a crescendo, they end with notes in a minor key filling the vacuum. The Library of Musical Instruments is a collection to contemplate on more than one occasion.
