Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book we summarize important developments in telecommunications with a focus on Signalling System No. 7 (SS 7) network reliability. But why is SS 7 network security and reliability so important? According to the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) model the term “network” refers to the Layer 3 network service, which is offered by the Message Transfer Part (MTP) and Signalling Connection Control Part (SCCP) to higher layers. An SS 7 network outage results in a breakdown of signalling between the individual nodes of the network, so that telecommunication network services are no longer available to customers. Apart from the tremendous nancial damage to the network operator, the social consequences of such a network breakdown cannot be underestimated. Since the MTP is the central part of the SS 7 network, it is of crucial importance for network security and reliability. The MTP is published in different versions and should now be what we call “stable”. Is it really stable? Does it work properly in real networks? Does it t new requirements so that no further changes within the MTP are needed? Various different implementations have existed for a long time and are used in national as well as the international network. Due to this, an objective is not to p- form any further changes within the MTP in order to avoid compatibility problems with existing and running systems. Experience shows that compatibility problems are always related to further development of the MTP.

Book excerpt: As Cavalli and Sarma astutely remarked in the introduction to this volume, it is quite remarkable that SDL '97 may have the first participant younger than SDL itself. SDL '97 provides the opportunity to reflect the course SDL has taken and why it has been successful over two decades where other languages addressing the same market have failed. SDL now also has a permanent companion in MSC (Message Sequence Charts). MSC today is a language in its own right and has its areas of application both in conjunction with SDL and independently or in combination with other techniques. MSC has strong structuring concepts to specify message sequences for large systems and can be used to develop scenarios, which is extremely useful for test and design environments. The SDL Forum today really is the SDL and MSC Forum.

Book excerpt: The rapid expansion of the field of telecommunication networks call for a new edition to assist the readers with development of understanding towards new telecommunication technologies. This well-accepted textbook, now in its Second Edition, is designed for the final-year undergraduate and the first-year graduate students in electronics and communication engineering and allied subjects. It fulfils the need for a suitable textbook in the area of telecommunication switching systems and networks. The text covers, in a single volume, both switching systems and telecommunications networks. The book begins with a brief discussion on the evolution of telecommunication. It then goes on to give a classification scheme for switching systems, and describes the basic components of a switching system and the fundamental concepts of network structures. It provides an in-depth coverage of fibre optic communication system and the traffic engineering concepts. A distinguishing feature of the book is the thorough treatment of the most important telecommunication networks, viz. the public switched telephone network (PSTN), the public data network (PDN), and the integrated services digital network (ISDN). Worked-out examples and exercises would be of considerable assistance to the reader in understanding all aspects of telecommunication engineering. NEW TO THIS EDITION • Sections on SONET, WDM, and DWDM in Chapter 7 • New section on Broadband ISDN and related technologies in Chapter 11 • A new chapter on Mobile Communication which covers almost all aspects of the cell planning and mobile channels • A new chapter on Satellite Communication which gives sufficient introductory knowledge of the satellites, satellite orbits, and orbital theory • Satellite link budget analysis (with examples) in Chapter 13.

The textbooks in this three-volume set combine informal, engineeringly sound approaches with the rigor of formal, mathematics-based approaches. This volume covers the basic principles and techniques of specifying systems and languages. It deals with modelling the semiotics (pragmatics, semantics and syntax of systems and languages), modelling spatial and simple temporal phenomena, and such specialized topics as modularity (incl. UML class diagrams), Petri nets, live sequence charts, statecharts, and temporal logics, including the duration calculus. Finally, the book presents techniques for interpreter and compiler development of functional, imperative, modular and parallel programming languages. This book is targeted at late undergraduate to early graduate university students, and researchers of programming methodologies. Vol. 1 of this series is a prerequisite text.
